It’s kind of creepy and just brings up some bad memories. What about you? Why don’t you like it…? [she asks as she slowly slumps downward and sits on the floor, patting the ground and inviting Hannah to sit beside her]

Well ya can’t sleep out here eitha. {He smiles when he says it and then motions at her, giving a small nod of his head.} Come here cupcake and talk ta me.
[Hannah steps closer to Jim, taking a seat next to him in the grass. She picks a few blades of it, ripping them up in her fingers.] What do you want to talk about?
Are we leaving soon?
Cool, just don’t tell anyone that I curse in front of you. I’m sure it would piss some people off. [She says, tossing the girl a small smirk,]
I don't tell secrets. You're safe.
Are we leaving soon?
[With a sigh, Kris slumps against the wall just beside Hannah and lets her eyes wander around the base for a moment] Yeah… me neither.
Why don't you like it?

{The footsteps are quiet and Jim almost doesn’t hear them, but a faint shadow moves in the corner of his eye and it makes him look up. He lets out a breath when he sees Hannah and he offers her a smile despite his next question.} Ya supposed ta be out here, sweetheart?
[Hannah stops in a grassy area, her hand still on the bricks as she tips her head over to look at Jim. She looks a little caught, but then steps through the shadows and within a fraction of a second is standing beside him, her head towards the ground.] I can't sleep in there.
Are we leaving soon?
Yeah. Why? Did you not want me to say that in front of you? [Layla asks, feeling a bit guilty.]
I don't mind.
Are we leaving soon?
Fucking hope so. I hate it here. [Layla says from where she sits against the wall, smoking a cigarette she found.]

That’s a good question. {Gabe responds from just outside the bunk area, picking at the chipped polish coating his nails. He can’t remember exactly why he had gotten out of bed and wandered into the dark shadows. But he didn’t mind. It seems like a break, a well deserved separation from whatever or whoever he was dreaming about.} Don’t know. Why? Don’t like it here?
[Hannah pauses in her wandering to look up at the man. She picks at the bricks of the wall for a moment, like she's bashful or shy. But really she's just waiting for him to tell her she shouldn't be out here. When the scolding doesn't come, she just nods her head.] This isn't a nice place.
Are we leaving soon?
Not really sure, sweetie. But I’m pretty sure most of us want to leave as soon as possible…
I don't like it here.

[Hannah steps out of the bunk area, staying close to the wall. It's dark out and she runs her hands along the wall as she starts on down the edge of the building. She's grown restless in the depot and though wandering is against the rules, she wonders if just taking a look around is.]
Left Behind || Layla & Hannah
"Wait." Layla said. She was surprised at herself that she didn’t want Hannah to leave, but she had been possibly the only other person who had known him. The only other person who had spent enough time with him to call him a friend. She knew it was selfish to try and keep her around purely for the strange comfort she took from that though. Glancing down at Kazimir’s body she thought for a moment before reaching into his pocket.
When she pulled out the knife, she paused, tempted to keep it for herself. She remembered they way he had thrown it, how impressed she been, but it didn’t belong to her. If Hannah wanted to go practice, that was fine. Kaz had said she’d had potential and Layla didn’t doubt it for a moment. Whatever code he had kept or discarded, he had been the girl’s teacher, and thought that training her was worthwhile. He wouldn’t have wanted her to stop. Taking a breath she held it out to Hannah, handle first.
"He’d want you to have it." she said softly, a small smile gracing her face because though she’s not certain of much, she is certain of this.
Hannah stopped when the woman called to her. She watched her for a moment and frowned when she didn't respond right away. Why call her and go quiet? But as she watched, the woman reached into Kazimir's pocket and Hannah almost told her to stop, because anything he kept in there was his and he didn't like it when people went through his stuff. He was a very private man. When she pulled the knife out, the words died on Hannah's lips and she just watched the weapon in the woman's hands. Kazimir had found her other knives. Smaller ones to go along with her Knife of Omens. Ones she could practice with until she grew into the hunting knife.
At the words, Hannah didn't give it a second thought. The shadows around her seemed to be sucked in and it was with very little effort that she stepped through them to appear at the woman's side. She reached out to take the knife and if it was just a small display of power, to prove to her that Kazimir had been training her for a reason, it would have to do. He'd trained her with and without the powers. Without, because some days there just wasn't enough shadows in the world. The sun was too bright, the days too long and she needed to know how to fight even without.
"Spasibo," she told the woman.
Left Behind || Layla & Hannah
Layla stared at the girl for a moment before summoning up a weak smile. If it had been anyone else, she might not have been so friendly, but this was Hannah. Kazimir’s bodyguard. Using the hand that wasn’t still holding his she wiped at her tears.
"Hey, Hannah." she said thickly. Layla wasn’t sure for a moment whether or not she should give the younger girl a moment of privacy, but it didn’t matter because at the moment she didn’t think her legs would work for her. Glancing back down at Kazimir, Layla forgot all about Hannah for a moment, pressing his hand to the side of her face like it had been the last time she’d seen him, almost willing the heat from her cheeks to flow out of her and into him, to somehow magically wake him. Taking a deep breath to try and defend herself against another onslaught of tears she turned her head and kissed his palm before placing his hand back down. Turning back to Hannah, she found she couldn’t directly look at her because if she did she would burst into tears. Hannushka. That’s what he’d called her. Layla remembered it clearly because she’d found it cute that a self-professed ‘bad man’ had been so close to a little girl, going so far as to train her and talk about her potential. Finding some control over her voice and emotions she finally looked at Hannah and gave the girl the first honest smile shed had since she’d heard the news.
"He was really proud of you, you know." she said. Those weren’t the exact words he’d ever used, but it had been obvious to her in the way he’d smiled as he spoke about her.
"I know," Hannah said. It wasn't meant to be cocky or mean, it was just the truth. The man had never said the words to her, but she wasn't stupid. She wasn't blind to the world and she didn't think she'd been a child to those sort of things since waking up. There were mature, adult concepts she had become increasingly aware of the longer she'd lived in this new world and the foggier the old world had become. Unlike others, whose memories had slowly been coming back, Hannah's past had abandoned her. She remembered vague pieces here and there. Things she knew to be true, like she had a brother, though she doesn't remember his name. She liked dragons and lizards and a few other things. But for the most part, Hannah was gone. She got closer and closer to being Hollow, her own version of the word, every day.
Her eyes strayed from the woman to the body she was kneeling beside. She kept her distance, her hands down at her side and her face blank. She'd come to tell him she hated his lesson, but now that she was here, she didn't want to do it anymore. Not in front of the woman and not in front of him, even if he was dead to the world. She stood there for a moment longer, a little awkwardly before nodding her head and starting to turn away. "I'm going to go practice."

Layla had waited none to patiently for Samson to finally let her say her goodbyes to Kazimir. When she’d approached his body the tears surprisingly stopped falling and she just stared at him for a moment. Though her eyes swam, there was still some bit of strength she gained just from being near him. Dropping down beside him, she smiled weakly though she knew he couldn’t see her. Reaching out she took his hand and it killed her to feel the cold weight of it. Holding it in both of her own she ran her thumbs over the tattoo he had first shown her. He hadn’t been a good man, but for a brief, shining moment in her life, he had been her man. Pressing her lips to his chilled skin she closed her eyes and a few stray tears fell onto him. Pulling back she leaned farther over him, running her fingers over his lips one final time. The last words he’d left her were burned inside her mind and though she hadn’t heard them herself, it was his voice in her head, thanking her for everything. Fresh tears rolled down her cheek and she sniffed them back weakly. Her hand cupped the side of his face and she stared down at him before lowering her face down to his ear
"You’re welcome, sweetheart." she whispered, hoping that somewhere he could hear her. She wouldn’t bother sobbing and begging him not to leave her behind. She wouldn’t cry out useless ‘I love you’s’. However short it had been, however unfairly it had ended, at least they had both felt it. It had been real. Still holding his hand, she knew she should get up and let the others know he could be buried, but she wasn’t quite ready to move yet, not even when she heard soft footsteps behind her. Raising her tear stained face she expected to find Samson, but that wasn’t who was standing in front of her.
Shadows didn't cry. They didn't get upset over dead things and they didn't feel remorse at deep losses. They just existed. They were quick, uncatchable and silent. Hannah had been practicing to be all of those things and she'd been practicing most of them with Kazimir the past couple of months. He'd taught her about respect, about patience, about humility and these weren't things that came in light lessons. They'd talked about a scenario like this, about losing people they cared about and it wasn't until recently Hannah had realized there was anyone that fit that description for the man. Not until a woman had been looking for him wearing his coat. The two of them hadn't talked about much more than training, much more than lessons in survival and death. She couldn't but think it, sitting alone on the top bunk of the barracks, that this had been his final lesson. She didn't appreciate it.
So when Samson had come in and said that they were going to bury Kazimir soon, Hannah wasn't sure she wanted to go and see him. There was respect there, because he'd taught it to her, but there was also an anger. She didn't want this lesson. She wasn't as close to the man as she was to Eli or Jim, though she spent far more time with him than the other two lately. He was her mentor. And in the end, she'd even admitted it, he was her friend. But she'd never know if he would say the same about her. She'd wanted to ask him. Even if he couldn't answer, so she'd headed to where Samson had laid his body and she'd come up quietly, but her footsteps had faltered. They'd made noise when she saw the woman leaning over him. And when she turned around, Hannah just stood there a moment, unsure what to say.
Where is that kid?
Well ya let me know if ya not okay and I’ll try ta make it better. {He moves his hand and pulls her into a hug instead, resting his chin on the top of her head.} ‘Cause I like splashin’ in puddles too.
[Hannah hugs him tighter at the words and she wants to tell him that she's not necessarily sad. But she's feeling an unfamiliar need to put her knives to use. To use the shadows against the monsters and it's more than just to prove herself. It's to pay respect.] He was my friend.
Fuck this shit.
Hannah, no. You have to stay inside.
I know how to kill monsters.
Where is that kid?
{The answer hits him harder than anything right now, because it’s not right, not right coming from her mouth and it leaves him more upset than he probably has a right to be.} Ya not a shadow though. Ya a little girl and it’s alright if ya ain’t okay.
I'll be okay. [Hannah almost leaves it at that, but there's a look on his face and she reaches out to take his hand, leaning into his side.] Shadows don't splash in puddles either. But I still like doing that with you.
