“A Star is Born” (2018)

-Bradley Cooper took this script, put it to his head, and pulled the trigger

-he plays one of the saddest, broken, tragic characters I have seen in a long time.

+no excuses, no looking away

-he frankly steals the show from lady Gaga(who is great)

-I didn’t know he had it in him. This is by far his best work

-the weariness of Neil Young, and the downward spiral of Kurt Cobain

-this is a visually rich film

+in addition to the quiet, lengthy masters, there are several stunning and isolating pillow shots of scenery

-a lot of music flicks tend to be about light suffering, the good times ending. This film shows a man who never had good times and is startled to think he may have some

-I admire this film for showing alcoholism and drug use not as a result of crazy schedules and over the top lifestyles, but as a disease that makes sad victims of its occupants

-there are nice little contunity touches; Cooper mentions his mother was 18 when she had him; 30 minutes later he rambles about his dad being 63 at his birth. The inference of how such a union took place is left to us

-this is an adult melodrama with a time weariness on its shoulder

-it comes off as camp in the first few scenes, but soon strips back the mask

-nice touch of showing Cooper (who was doubted as a singer) rocking out in the very beginning

-this might be the best directed actor debut since “Buffalo ‘66”

-interesting to note how several key characters are played by actors who exist out of sync with society (Andrew Dice Clay, Dave Chappelle)

-that poor dog

-I like the line of “thank you for making this place feel like a home”

-god, that juxtaposition of singing truth while you got eyes on you, then crass pop song about “why that ass in those jeans” is whiplash inducing

-this film seems to say that Saturday night live is neutered and risk averse; I agree

-the final scene seems to combine the power of Whitney Houston and the vulnerability of Dolly Parton

-Sam Elliot says so much with his eyes as he turns around in the car

-this is a the story of a black hole of a person, and the conviction and focus it took to make it is commendable. Well worth telling the 12 notes again

Sorry but the scene where Lady Gaga is singing on the big stage ‘Never Love Again’ and suddenly it cuts to when Bradley’s character is singing a stripped down version to her is one of my favourite scenes in history. It was so gorgeously done wtf.
