completely forgor to mention that every year con season gives me an obsessive desire to make merch, so i made some stickers for myself to calm my soul
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Kamone Shirahama and Kodansha Manga for the chance to read this absolutely stunning manga. With the newly released anime, I feel like so many people have been recommending this to me, so when I was approved on NetGalley it was so amazing!
It absolutely didn’t disappoint.
Immediately, the art is so beautiful. The level of love and detail that’s gone into each and every page of this is so evident. The level of talent this author has is incredible. The story itself is also just wonderful. From the first page you’re absolutely drawn in - the magic system is super interesting, and Coco was SO instantly likeable. Her worries, her drive, and the way she overcame the trials towards the end had me absolutely rooting for her. Qifrey is of course, amazing, and I’m so intrigued to learn more of their story.
I can see this being a cosy, comforting coming of age story, grappling friendships, stubborn rivalries, and a bigger insidious plot alongside, and I can’t wait to read more!
This was absolutely amazing. Thank you so much to @netgalley @sourcebookscasa and @mk_lobb for the privilege of reading this before publication - and let me tell you, I can’t recommend this enough!
The Dark in Her Veins was a perfectly paced masterpiece of a book, incredibly tense and intriguing. The idea of sin as a visual thing, a slow killer, made me wanna read this so badly and I’m so glad I did.
I think calling it a romance isn’t quite right. The characters themselves say it perfectly - that the connection within this book is pure obsession. It’s toxic and heady and had me on the edge of my seat. By bringing in the idea of sin and confession and Slade needing to feed on that, the idea of Talin being drawn to it, you completely fix the ‘instalove’ trope.
They’re symbiotic and lustful, not loving.
I will admit I guessed the twist at the end back in chapter 7, but that’s not necessarily to the books detriment, as I felt like a detective myself, wondering whether I’d be proven right or wrong.
If you want a dark, religiously charged urban noir with an obsessive switch romance, look no further
