an hour ago the young writer protege gave cal a gist on what to say, words to reiterate to catch the folks’ attention. of course, cal wondered if it was okay or not, but he had to help out a friend ( who assured him that it was fine ). eyes once fixed on the adult shifted to the newspaper issue in his hand.

❛ b--but it-it’s supposed t’ be ah.. a good, “ih-i-innnformative,” paper!

he waves the issue up at the man, toting a smile that’s blissfully ignorant of the supposed TRUTH printed on it.

curiosity killed the cat is written along some salvageable pre-war book, intended as cautionary advice to stop a person from delving their nose into something they shouldn’t, or a child into heaps of the deceased. despite a little part of him being hesitant, he doesn’t think too far ahead as he approaches.

dead. lifeless eyes, some frozen in the state of fear the moment they died. blood coated the floors, their clothes. he doesn’t want to stare. a delayed wave of worry & sadness washes over him as cal turns away, face scrunched up. it takes him a while to find his voice, “what ha-hap--- happened t’ them? ah--a-arrre they all--” DEAD?

fingers splay, exposing a palm that tiny bits of ammo fill. ammo of varying shells: different shotguns & pistols, mainly. he holds it out for them to see, but is careful as if the bullets were precious eggs fragile enough to crack.

he rushes past diamond city residents, dodging them as if they were radiated barrels; the news of yet another kidnapping stays fresh in his mind.

once meeting the bright illumination of neon, he knows he’s close. he follows the signs but relies on memory, having trailed the same pathways countless times before. the moment he arrives, a hand reaches out to quickly turn the knob, then the weight of his body shoves the door open.

“news!” he says, filling a pause with his breaths meant to regain his composure. “there--there-re’s a ... missin’ case. a kid! fr-fr--from here.”

he blinks, not giving a hint he feels disturbed ( since he isn’t ), but he’s still all the more curious. what happened? would be an obvious follow-up question if his attention wasn’t cut off by the stranger’s reply. a new air surrounds the boy: he appears confident, almost like that of a devoted soldier. just minus the scars & burdening weight of war.
