Introductions

Hello all, feel free to call me Hapless.

I go by he/him, I'm aro/ace, and at time of post I'm 23.

I got into MLP towards the end of the last session of g4, and I love that the fandom has lasted far past that. I think it would be a fun project to find a way for all the previous gens to exist in the same broader setting.

I also really liked Horse Race Test and all the art people made for it, particularly Superstitional Realism as a Unicorn.

Outside of that I have an interest in Dnd/TTRPGs and horror, and I'll talk about them if people ask, but those won't be the focus of this blog outside of mixing with Mlp and other horse and pony related media.

I generally am very inconsistent with posting, and will rarely reblog.

All that being said, I can wait to meet you all!

Here's a painting I did of Minto Grimm, Iris Rose's brother. He works at the family funeral business, having been taught by his father Mori, who was in turn taught by his grandfather Moe.

The flower on the brochure is meant to be his Cutiemark, but it didn't come out quite how I wanted. I'm working on a digital version of it that I'll reblog it with later.

Overall pretty happy with how the painting came out, and I hope others like it too!!

Below is the information on these drawings + I wanted to talk about another piece. Just like to spoiler walls of text!

So I was going to do lineless, didn't like how it was coming out, tried another lineless, also didn't like it and so I scrapped it. This is my OC Momento Mori, she works as a mortician but her special talent is preservation in general! I wanted to make a style sheet just for myself because I have quite a few styles and I decided against using specific ones.

Intially I was going to have about 7 styles since I have "differing" painting styles, but a large majority of said styles are due to experimentation and not my actual painting style! I just really like experimenting with my works, but this has been really fun to work on so far. I think, eventually, I'm going to finish it but I like all the sketches so far - but I wanna do other things if I'm completely honest! Also shown is a sketch of @misantrium 's OC Crimmy in the corner. Her dad man, her big silly old dad man ;; she lobs her dad man!

Beem thinking of redrawing this piece since I really like the og "self-ship" I drew of them with my Dash x Derpy kinsona - but they're not really a kinsona anymore. The piece is really cute though! Just not sure if I should paint it or not!

Oh that's fun, I also mortician characters named after the phrase Momento Mori!!

It's a pair of them, a father and a son, Mori Grimm and Minto Grimm. I don't have any art for either of them yet, but I was planning on having Minto have having a peppermint esthetic, which is another fun bit of overlap in terms of them both being white and red. They are the brother and father of one of my more focused on characters, Iris Rose, with her growing up the daughter of a mortician and a taxidermist being a contributing reason she as to why she is more comfortable around aspects of the natural world that tend to creep other ponies out.

As an aside, I was thinking of having one of her parents no longer be here, and I keep flip flopping between which one. I think it would work better if it was the father, since I've already got a character maintaining the legacy of his work (I could give the mother an apprentice though), but when I had it being the mother who died I was playing with the idea of the remaining parent dealing with the grief by performing their work as an act of love, and I don't think the idea father being taxidermied and sitting in either their workplaces or at their home doesn't quite fit the tone I want to strike with my version of the setting. I do like the idea of playing with some more macabre elements, but I struggle with it a little. A little off topic from where I started but I wouldn't mind anyone weighing in on it. What was I talking about, Right, cool that we came up with a similar concept independently, your art looks really cool!!!

Someone did art of Iris!!!

Midnight Oil, @midnight_oil_mane on TikTok, asked for MLP OCS to draw, to which I offered Iris.

I love the way she looks, in particularly the more show accurate way eye looks in comparison to weight the way I usually draw it.

Last but not least, please welcome Candlewick Glow, Outpost Manager and Mission Lead. She is very well read and has always had a strong curiosity for questions left unanswered, hence being the reason she among others pushed for the making of the Motley Shades Outpost. The Outpost sits in a forest at the furthest reaches of Equestria, which has only the barest hint of a path to it which is only walked upon by a barely local Earth Pony, who acts as The Outpost's one tether to the outside world.

The Motley Shades woodland is notable for a few reasons, ranging from the more usual oddities of various forms of wildlife with odd magical properties, to the fact that the trees are different deeply saturated colors, different banded collections of said trees making strange rainbow-esque patterns.

Though the unexpected halting of the project as it was beginning to get its footing as well as the lack of the expected personnel has been challenging, she has been sure to keep the trio motivated and focused, while also allowing them to pursue their own personal projects in the wake of unexpected free time.

Meet Iris Rose, the lead and currently only researcher of Motley Shades. She comes from a family of funeral directors and taxidermists, which is given her a unusually strong stomach for and interest in the macabre and unusual.

Additionally, when she catches wind of something odd, she tends to become singularly focused on it, to the point of not being able to notice people talking directly to her right next to her while she tries to parse the shell patterning of some cicadas discarded exoskeleton.

In addition to her general research duties, she is taken to setting up a mini museum at The Outpost, of the design of which takes cues from Curio Cabinets as a concept, most filled with things that interest her in particular, which tends to be dead things or scary looking things.

Here's a reintroduction to Whirlwind Rush, the Weatherpony of a nature research outpost in a very odd far off woodland. In terms of personality, he is a person who deeply loves all weather, no matter how hot, cold, wet, or dry.

He is perpetually unbothered and cheery, always seeming to believe things will just work out, and almost always seeming to be correct in that assumption when in reference to weather.

As an aside, I've decided that the setting will, at least for now, be called Motley Shades.

Also, the first image has some errors, I forgot to give him his neck bandana and his cutie mark is pointed in the wrong direction

Another drawing of Wind Whistler, more closely sticking to G1's art style with the wings and legs.

I do think the line work is a bit shakier on this one, but I'm chalking that up too it being a bigger drawing.

An inked drawing of Wind Whistler from G1. Honestly started as a drawing of a generic pony, so that's why there are some G3 elements where there shouldn't be. Feel like it's a lot better than my previous drawings though.

The brain worms got to me and I immediately made another of her, who knew having a character you aren't being precious about does wonders for your ability to just Draw Something. Broadly like how it came out, I do think that her smile and the look in her eyes comes off a little eerie, which wasn't intentional, but I don't know if it doesn't fit the character or not yet. Someone for the love of Celestia give her some brown contacts
