OC Job Ideas (Dark)!!!
20 Ways to Show Extreme Fear in Your Writing
As I dive into researching signs of fear for my horror WIP, I wanted to share some of the most compelling and visceral reactions I’ve come across. Whether you’re writing a chilling scene or crafting a character’s panic, these 20 signs of fear can help bring tension and realism to your story.
Physical Reactions
Hyperventilating — sucking in air but never feeling like it’s enough
Chest tightens — feels like a weight or hands pressing down
Limbs shaking violently, knees buckling
Complete loss of muscle control — collapsing or unable to stand
Cold sweat soaking through clothes
Heart hammering so hard they feel it in their throat or head
Tunnel vision — the world narrowing down to one terrifying focal point
Ringing in the ears or sudden deafness, like the world drops away
Dizziness / feeling faint / vision blurring
Dry mouth — unable to speak or even scream
Uncontrollable Behavior
Screaming / sobbing / gasping — involuntary vocal outbursts
Panic run — bolting without thinking, tripping over everything
Clawing at their own skin / chest / throat — like trying to escape their body
Begging / pleading out loud even if no one’s there
Repeating words or phrases — “No, no, no” / “This isn’t happening”
Hiding instinctively — diving under tables, closets, or corners
Desperate grabbing — reaching for someone, anything solid
Loss of bladder or bowel control (for extreme terror)
Total mental shutdown — frozen, slack-jawed, staring blankly
Memory blackout — later can’t recall what happened during the worst moment

When the touch is gentle:
»-♡→ Brushed »-♡→ Grazed »-♡→ Caressed »-♡→ Stroked »-♡→ Patted »-♡→ Cradled »-♡→ Rested against »-♡→ Smoothed »-♡→ Trailed along »-♡→ Glided over

➺ Squeezed ➺ Held ➺ Embraced ➺ Wrapped around ➺ Clasped ➺ Pressed gently against ➺ Rubbed ➺ Supported ➺ Steadied ➺ Cupped
...or affectionate:
➵ Ruffled ➵ Nuzzled ➵ Kissed ➵ Linked arms with ➵ Nestled against ➵ Curled around ➵ Leaned into ➵ Rested a hand on ➵ Laced fingers with ➵ Pulled close
...or romantic:
̗̀➛ Traced ̗̀➛ Ghosted across ̗̀➛ Brushed against ̗̀➛ Skimmed over ̗̀➛ Lingeringly stroked ̗̀➛ Ran a thumb along ̗̀➛ Tilted their chin ̗̀➛ Tucked a strand of hair behind their ear ̗̀➛ Pressed their forehead against ̗̀➛ Intertwined fingers

What helped me write trauma better is remembering that the nervous system learns predictions. If danger used to come after quiet, calm can feel threatening. If kindness used to come with a price, kindness can feel suspicious. So healing is not just “they know they’re safe now.” Healing is the slow, annoying, deeply unfair process of teaching the body that the old prediction is not always the present truth.
And now, for some Friends-to-Enemies-to-Lovers Prompts!
[Also check out my mini arguement on why I think friends to enemies to lovers is supperior to just enemies to lovers.]
• Former best friends now lead opposing factions, and every negotiation meeting feels like a meeting after a breakup they never got to have. Did I mention sexual tension?
• “I thought we were the same side.” — “I was, until your side stopped including me.”
• “If you wanted me gone, you could’ve just said so.” — “I did.” — “No. You fucking left.”
• One of them betrayed the other to save their life, and never explained why. Now the truth comes out way too late.
• Or, better (worse) yet, you can't even say the truth because you can't blow your cover / you're always observed, so the "villain" pleads with their eyes to the "hero", hoping they'll somehow, somehow understand they're not their enemy.
• “I didn’t betray you.” — “Yeah, sure, you just walked right off where I couldn't follow / and told me not to follow you.”
• “If I ask you to come back...” — “Don't." — "Will you?" — "I can't."
• “Say it.” — “Say what?” — “That it meant nothing to you. That I'm just another face on the battlefield. That you would seriously let the world burn with me in it. Fucking say it!”
• “If I turn around and just fuck off, because I've had enough of this conversation, will you try to stop me?” — "Do you want me to?
• A childhood gift (ring, charm, shared symbol) resurfaces as proof that they're still bonded, regardless of this messy situation, like bro trust me.
• They trained side by side. Only one of them was chosen. The other never forgave them for moving on without them.
• After years apart, they meet again as enemies, and realize they still fight in perfect sync without meaning to, like a fucking choreography, like muscle memory.
• And the hot make out session that abruptly ends the fight like muscle memory idk how complicated things were between them before they separated okay.
• "Touch me like you used to.” — “After everything?” —“Especially after everything.”
• "Fuck me raw right here and now." — "What, now, here?" — "Did I fucking stutter?"
• One became everything they once swore to destroy. The other still believes they can be saved.
• They know each other’s weaknesses by heart (habits, tells, fears) and use them ruthlessly in battle. I'm talking not knife-to-the-neck, I'll-cut-your-throat, you're-beautiful. I'm talking actual psychological warwafe.
• “You always do this.” — “Do what?” — "Run away from your problems or any sense of responsibility." — "Wow, are we really doing this now?"
• “I see you still do that lip biting thing when you're scared.” — “You don’t know me anymore.” — “I know you better than you know yourself.”
• The villain keeps sparing the hero.
• The hero keeps calling them by their old nickname.
• Better yet, they aren't conflicted by this at all and are simply, flat out secretly dating while screwing with their respected factions.
• "I was sent here to arrest you." — "Can I use my get-out-of-jail-free card?"
• "I was sent here to kill you." —"Is you trying to kill me and failing, like, more of a 2-hour movie date or just long enough for a messy blowjob?"
• Even better, they flat out flirt with each other during battle and confuse the heck out of everyone else. People dread them fighting, mostly because it gets super awkward and uncomfortable to watch.
• Forced into a temporary alliance, they fall back into old rhythms. Laughter and jokes come pouring out before either of them can stop it or even think about it.
• “I don’t know how to fight you without letting you win, you were always bad at this.”
•Holding them at knife-point. "I miss you."
•“I don’t hate you.”
And an honorable mention to Tulio and Miguel, even if it was a theatrical friends-to-enemies in the moment lol:
• "You fight like my sister!" — "I fought your sister before, it's a compliment!"
Still one of my best posts after many months online that Tumblr writers are loving, so I'm thinking you guys want some more. Coming up :)

➺ Scanned ➺ Surveyed ➺ Examined ➺ Inspected ➺ Searched ➺ Swept their gaze across ➺ Looked over ➺ Studied ➺ Pored over ➺ Scrutinized

‘Team as Family’ Dynamics
tired parent and overpowered kids: there is no question whether something will go wrong, only how much effort it will take for Leader to try and fix it
chaotic sibling horde: no one is in charge or planning a damn thing, somehow they get shit done anyway
cool uncle, stern dad, and impulsive gremlins: a leader who usually allows no shenanigans while another, older team member has enough authority to justify letting the gremlins loose when Leader is looking away
eldest child vs. middle children: the Leader was technically never formally given the task of leading the team, but no one else was gonna step up and take charge, so they did
leader went to go get milk: Leader left the team without a word years ago and is now back, but no one is willing to admit how much they were missed and is now shown the cold shoulder because Leader is ‘no longer needed’
estranged cousins: they don't work together often and it can be rocky at first, but once they get in the groove, they are scarily effective
golden child and middle children: Leader mainly pays attention to the most promising team member, making envy build up in everyone else
babysitter: Leader is out of commission and someone else is put in their place, unsure how they have ended up playing babysitter
"when i was your age": the old team is readily available for advice, training the new generation

Things to consider when Writing about Schools/Academies!!
⊹ What is this school actually for. training mages? knights? spies? just normal education? because "prestigious academy" means nothing if you don't know what they're prestigious at
⊹ Who gets in and how. is it merit based, do you have to be rich, legacy admissions, secret tests, random selection, born with the right abilities. what happens to kids who don't make the cut
⊹ What's the age range. are these literal children or young adults or mixed ages. because a school with 11 year olds has very different problems than one with 18 year olds
⊹ How strict is it. prison vibes with tons of rules? pretty chill? different rules for different student groups (which is unfair and causes drama)?
⊹ What are the social hierarchies. obviously there are cliques but what are they based on. wealth? power level? what year you're in? family name? talent?
⊹ What happens if you fail or get expelled. are you just sent home in shame or is it worse. do people sometimes not survive the training. how often do students drop out or disappear
⊹ Who are the teachers and why are they teaching. washed up former heroes? people who never left? actually passionate educators? suspicious people using it as a cover? mix of all of them probably
⊹ What's forbidden. certain magic, certain areas of campus, relationships between students, leaving grounds, specific books/knowledge. and obviously your protagonist will break these rules
⊹ How do students get sorted/grouped. houses? teams? specializations? randomly? and do these groups have rivalries because they should
⊹ What's the curriculum actually like. is it actually useful or are they learning weird outdated stuff. are there classes that are just covers for something else. what are the hardest classes
⊹ Where is this school located. isolated castle? middle of a city? pocket dimension? floating island? does it move? can students leave or are they stuck there
⊹ What traditions does the school have. tournaments, festivals, hazing rituals (the dark kind), graduation ceremonies, weird old customs nobody questions
⊹ Is there corruption in the faculty/administration. favoritism, taking bribes, secret agendas, covering up student deaths, embezzling, working for the villain
⊹ What's the diversity situation. is it segregated somehow (by class, species, magic type)? integrated but with tension? do some groups face discrimination from staff or other students?
⊹ What happens outside of classes. clubs? underground fight rings? secret societies? banned parties? students sneaking out? romantic drama?
⊹ Why is your protagonist specifically there. chosen one nonsense? hiding from something? forced to attend? actually wants to learn? found out they have powers and got dragged there confused?
Commonly Confused Words (3): Who vs. Whom
Who functions either as the subject of a sentence ("Who told Jason that?") or as nominative pronoun in the predicate ("I met the one who was told by Marie.")
Whom functions as the object of either a verb ("Marie saw whom?") or a preposition, such as for whom, by whom, to whom, ... ("Jason talked to whom?").
Generally, if you can replace the word with he or she, use who ("He/Who told Jason that?"). If you can replace it with him and her, use whom ("Marie saw him/whom?") In some cases, you may need to restructure the sentence for this to work: "Who told Jason that?" — "She told Jason that." ✓ "Whom did Jason tell?" — "Him did Jason tell." ✗ → "Jason told him." ✓
"Why does whom sound weird in the beginning of the sentence?" The usual structure of an English sentence is Subject, Verb, Object. Putting "whom" (the object) in the beginning can sound off. To avoid this, you can restructure the sentence: "Whom did Jason talk to?" → "Jason talked to whom?"
End Note: Though it is not grammatically correct, it is generally not considered a big mistake to use who when whom should be used, especially in casual speech. Sometimes, it may even be preferred as it sounds more natural, even though it is technically incorrect: "Who did Jason tell?"
academic rivals to lovers
“Been distracted lately. Your new boyfriend is gonna make you fall behind.” “Jealous?” “That you’re gonna fuck up your grades for some below average sex? Yeah, I’m foaming at the mouth.”
“How can a single person be so incredibly irritating?” “I’d like to know the same thing.”
“How is your handwritting this shitty?” “Not everyone cares more about aesthetics than the actual meaning of the words.” “I was called because the prof thought you wrote in a different alphabet!”
“It’s like arguing with a wall!” “Same level of intelligence, yeah.”
“Must you always make it a competition?” “Funny how you only take issue with it when I am the one winning.”
“Poor thing. To work so hard only to be beaten by me every time.”
“This is childish. Come on, say something nice about [rival].” “Well, I guess their passion for knowledge is a quality that some might say is somewhat respectable.” “… Wow.”
“Ever wonder what we could achieve if we worked together?”
“Want me to proofread it?” “What, so you can steal my intellectual property?” “The only thing I’m gonna steal are the insomnia induces typos, you weirdo.”
“You look tired.” “And you care why?” “I don’t, I just like pointing out your flaws.”
“You write poetry?” “What? Where did you get that?! Don’t read that, it’s not good!” “It’s not… You’re willing to admit that something you did is—” “Fuck off! This is personal and none of your business! It’s nothing we are ever gonna compete in, it’s private!” “Sorry…”
“You’re such a know-it-all.” “Not my fault you’re a know-only-some-of-it.” “That was terrible.” “Well, you hurt my feelings and I had to improvise.”
