My Materpost On Tips and Resources
These are all the tips Ive picked up from my reading and I’ll continue to add onto it based off my experience and my continued reading. If anyone has anything else to add then let me know.
Basics I’ve picked up. (Generally I’d say most of these are for Beginners)
Be confident. This is essential for anyone who lifts. Never go in looking suspicious. From the moment you go in you are a regular shopper browsing. Act the part.
Don’t get cocky/Be careful. While you’re being confident you don’t need to get cocky. No matter if this is your first time or your hundredth you need to be careful.
If it feels wrong put it back. You can always come back, but not if your get caught. If it feels strange then drop the items and leave.
Browse openly. Pick out items that you want and don’t want. Openly walk around the store with them. As you move through the store an browse start concealing the items you wish you take. When you are done put the rest of the items back. (The first time my friend and I went we took a whole bunch of items to where my mom was. We asked her to buy us the items we didn’t want and she said no, as knew she would, we made a small scene about how we’d go and put them back.)
Stoke the place beforehand. It’s always a good idea to get a feel of the place before you lift. (We did this with Dd’s discounts and found probably over 20 cameras in the store. For me personally I wouldn’t risk whether they’re fake or not.)
The Busy hours. Try to go around busy hours like lunch hours maybe even sales or days like Black Friday.Employees may double up on LP or staff, but the ratio of customers to staff is too great to keep track of everyone.
The drinking cup. Lot’s of people bring those large soda cups into the store. They’re like a dollar, you can buy one and empty it and use it to take small items. I found this tip from Zoklet.com.
The umbrella method. Only do this when the weather is right. It look ridiculously suspicious to do this when it’s sunny out. Close the umbrella most of the way, but allowing room to drop small items in it.
The stores bag. Most cases you take another stores bag with you, however if you plan to get slightly larger items and going to a supermarket for example, you bag the items and go to the bathroom and remove the tags. This works well for stores where the bathrooms are where the registers are because they can see you going to bathroom as if you’ve already paid for the items. Maybe take an old receipt with you.
Taking two items. Take out two items and slip one into the bag so that it looks like you only grabbed one to look at in the first place.
Bags from other stores. This is widely known and works best for malls and mall strips. Take a bag from one store and go into another and slip the desired items into it.
Slightly more complex. (For those with more experience of the above and larger items.)
Dressing rooms. Assuming that most dressing rooms have attendants who count, take items you want and don’t want. Items you don’t want should be larger or thicker like dresses so that you can conceal the items within the items you don’t want. Since this method with almost always require you to have a tag opener you will go into the dressing room take off the tags of the items you want and either bag them or conceal them under your clothes. When you come out you can either put the items back on the rack or you can continue walking as if you intend to buy them and just put them back where you found them.
Line your bag with tinfoil. This is good for certain items with tags on the inside. To test the strength of the tin foil call someone on your phone and place phone in the bag. If it doesn’t ring then it should be think enough. Look up more information on this method as it can be tricky.
Wear loose fitting clothes that you could stash items in. I mean this is pretty straight forward - jeans that are loose fitted with a jacket or baggy shirt over it.
Puncture magnetic tags. You can either peel these tags off or use something small and sharp to break the metal threads within the tag.
Elaborate Methods. (These are what I consider to be more involved and determined)
Holidays like Black Friday. I have read that places like walmart will pretty much leave most electronics unlocked on black friday so that customers can easily access it and get to the counter quickly. I have no idea how much truth there is to this, but i it is then this is a great time to lift electronics that would otherwise be unwise to lift.
Have a friend enter the store a few minutes before you do and act as if you do not know each other. The friend will walk around the store acting very suspicious. Picking up items and putting them into a pocket making sure that they are seen, but not being obvious. When an employee sees someone acting suspicious they will begin watch that person. You then proceed to the opposite side of the store and retrieve the merchandise that you wish to take. Make any necessary adjustments to the items in order to remove them and then leave. Your friend should place any objects that where concealed back and then depart. If they are stopped while exiting they can easy prove that they didn’t take anything.
decoy alarm - put an active alarm in another persons bag - particularly someone with kids, and follow close behind them with ur bags - all attention will be put on them as you make it out the store
go into a store and shop like you normally would collecting as many expensive items as you can carry. As long as your appearance and attitude are not of a suspicious nature you should go unnoticed. Once you have collected your items just walk out and go to your car and leave. This is easily done in small clothing shops that do not have Loss Prevention. The sales associates will be slow to react. It could also be done in large department stores that have multiple entrances as long as you have a friend waiting in a car ready to leave. If the store has only Ink Tags you may not even be noticed as you leave. If an alarm sounds, then continue to walk calmly out the door. (I’m really sketchy to this idea and not sure if I personally would ever have the guts to pull this.)
Gator Tags. use a rubber band to remove these tags. By twisting the rudder band around the pin until it pops off. You could also use two pair of pliers by holding onto each side of the flaps by the pin and bending.
Sensormatic tag detacher. Ive never seen these be more than 20 dollars and even that is rare. If you plan on heavily lifting clothes then this will be useful to you. There are several tutorials on how to use them.
Magnet based tags and boxes. Neodymium magnets will open most magnetic based tags as well as alpha boxes if used the right way. If you don’t get the magnets for the alpha boxes then purchase an alpha s3 key, essentially its the same thing as the magnets.
