Something I love about cosplaying Carol is that I’m always hyper-aware of what she’s wearing. What has she changed? Altered? What’s stayed the same across episodes and weeks? Eulyn Womble, TWD’s costume designer, can always be counted on to contribute to the story and character development through the wardrobe. Even when the script is giving us nothing, the clothes often do. So I have a pretty good idea of what Carol was doing between “JSS” and “Now”. Below is the outfit she was wearing when the wolves attacked. (I just try to ignore her distraught face as much as humanly possible ugh.)

So when she donned the clothes of the wolf she killed, she kept her shoes and pants, but changed out of everything else. She isn’t wearing the lavender button-down; the collar would haven been visible under the tee at some point.

But then, in “Now”, she’s changed back to that lavender button-down. (Using Dalton’s BTS pic because it’s the highest quality pic we have of her outfit from that episode as she was kept as far away from the action as humanly possible for no discernible reason.)

So what I immediately noticed is how dirty the lavender top is now. She didn’t wear it when she was dressed as a wolf. And even if she did, it was covered by the coats. It couldn’t have gotten that dirty. Her bloody hands are now clean, but some of that W is still on her forehead.

So Carol hasn’t taken a shower. She hasn’t cleaned up. She only washed her hands of the blood and changed out of the wolf clothes - back into her own clothes, but without the undercover floral cardigan. She’s herself now. And then she immediately went to help bury the bodies. Why else would her clothes be that dirty? I wanted to imagine that after saving Alexandria in such a brutal and exhausting way, she might have just taken a bath. Or a nap. (Spencer would agree she deserves a reward, lulz.) But that’s not Carol. She sat on the porch, she reflected upon her actions and accepted them, and she stood right back up to begin cleaning up the carnage and make their community whole again. Without a word to anyone about everything she had just done for them.

We got about .28 seconds of blurry Carol in “Now,” so thank you so much to Eulyn for giving us more of her story than the script did.
