Do you ever think about how Rose Quartz from Steven Universe is parallel to Dios from Revolutionary Girl Utena? The parallels between Anthy and Pearl are obvious to anyone who watched both shows, but whether it's in fun crossover drawing or anywhere else people discuss the ways RGU inspired SU, I've only ever seen Rose compared to Utena or even Anthy in comparison to pearl. I can see both, but Dios feels especially right. Both shows start after Dios/Rose are already dead. In both shows, they are placed on pedestals. In both shows, they are the main motive behind some of the main characters actions, dreams, and desires. Both of their names are used to justify deeds the characters do. Both of them have been so idolized and their memory so distorted, they became more of a collection of ideals than living beings. To be idolized is to be dehumanized, and the thing Rose wanted most was to be human. I think that's the main reason Pearl couldn't be with Rose. Pearl worshipped Rose.

She could look at someone genetically predisposed to be a slave, an abomination to her entire culture, and an overbaked runt of a gem and see the value and beauty in each and every one of them, but when she looks at herself she just sees an unloving monster who can never change or grow. She left Spinel behind because she thought that without her there, Spinel would grow to be more than just a toy. She silenced Pearl because she hoped that she could erase even the memory that Pink Diamond ever existed. She turned into Steven because even as Rose Quartz, the rebel leader with 6,000 years of good karma under her belt, she still believed that it was just a facade, that underneath she could never grow or change into something good, and to do that she would have to wipe the slate completely clean. It's right there in her most important song "I could even learn how to love like you," she's saying that even though anyone looking at her knows she loves Greg and Pearl and all the other gems, she knows deep in her core that she doesn't, that it's a lie, because she is a diamond and diamonds are cold unloving monsters
