Joseph stood just beside the wall, close to the front of the room to see the band. And hear it too, though what he was hearing wasn’t impressing him at all. He’d attended bar mitzvah parties with better live music, and no, he was certain that wasn’t the nostalgia talking.

Though he had no lungs, he managed to get out a huff as he leaned against the wall, propping up a foot and crossing his arms as he did so.

“Is it just me, or does this band suck?”

Ramsey had wandered her way back into the ballroom and overheard the sound of someone speaking next to her. She tilted her head in the way a puppy looks at their owner in confusion before looking down at his feet. “ Are you stuck in place?” Ramsey asked looking back up. “ If you’re not I think there is a solution for this problem

The minute Ramsey heard there was a maze she took off running in the direction of it. She acted like a kid who was told Santa had just visited the night before. And while she wanted to make friends with everyone she met, sometimes people didn’t fully understand she was not used to socializing with normal people and was raised by people in commune that verged on being a cult. The blonde witch pulled her boots off and started to travel through the maze as if she was on a mission, making sure not to touch the plants but marveling in their beauty along the way “ You guys are so lovely. It’s like being asked not to pet a puppy that’s just so adorable” She chuckled as she stood near the side of one of the barriers of the maze. “You don’t say much do you?” She added before turning a corner to nearly bump into someone. “ Oh sorry. Are you on a journey too?” She asked holding her boots in her hand and the edge of her dress in the other.

The witch whipped up the drink with relative ease. There was little science behind that particular beverage, pouring the vodka, the juice, a bit on Cointreau, and a squeeze of lime. Since the blonde liked color, she surely would appreciate the vibrant fuchsia of the drink Cal set before her. “Hope you like it” she said with a small smile as she reached for the bill. It caught her a little off guard that the girl paid her with a twenty and told her to keep the change. “Thanks, that’s nice of you, but you do know that drink is only $9.50, right?” she asked as she held up the bill in her hand and glanced down at the drink she’d just prepared for her. The vodka Terry kept here wasn’t even anything too fancy, just a good enough liquor to get the job done (getting people drunk, that is). Cal appreciated the fact that the blonde was willing to leave such a generous tip, but somehow it felt like accepting it without question was a bit like swindling a girl who hadn’t even been too sure about what to order.

The blonde took a sip of the drink and smiled at the result. “ I dig it. Simple but to the point. Not at all like myself....you know opposites attract” She chuckled a bit as she took another drink from her glass. Ramsey knew she had given too much money, but it didn’t bother her. Money was this weird currency her family hadn’t really believed in at the commune and now that she lived in the rest of the world it still didn’t mean as much to her. It was just paper and she got a lot of it from dancing. Why not give it to someone else if it didn’t make her happy. “Yeah, I figured it was, but it’s okay. I still think money is weird and honestly carrying change and coins is a responsibility I was not prepared for.” She nodded with a smile letting her know it was completely fine. “ Are you a new face? I thought I have met every pretty person here”

So far no one had ordered a drink based on its color, so the girl’s decision surprised Cal a little. She thought it over for a moment and nodded, going ahead to grab a bottle of Smirnoff from the cupboard behind her and one of the juice bottles from the cooler. The easy bits like reading the glass and pouring ice cubes was becoming fast and automatic for the witch. It took her about a minute to have a bright, pink-red beverage for the blonde. “Vodka Cranberry does the trick for you?”. Perhaps she should have asked before making the drink but the girl had asked for vodka and at least now she could count on that sell.

Ramsey watched with a curious expression on her face. She tilted her head looking over to get a glimpse at what she was doing. While the witch was often covered in paint and had an affinity for art even simple thing’s like mixing a couple ingredients intrigued her like it was art as well. “Yes. This is past suitable. and go to another words that is escaping my mind. “ She smiled before handing a twenty over to her. “ You can keep the change. You were nice to me” She mused before taking a sip of her drink.

Date: April 25th, 2021 Location: Terrance’s

Why would anyone hire someone without experience was beyond her, but the witch didn’t question it because she needed the job. So here she was, the newest bartender at Terrance’s. Her absolute lack of knowledge on how to mix drinks had progressed into a mere relative lack of knowledge over the past weeks. Not so much because anyone had bothered to teach her the ropes but because Cal had been doing some online research and trying a few things at home. “What can I get you?” she asked as a client slid into a stool by the bar.

Ramsey had wandered into the bar after finishing a painting and she needed to clear her head. It had been swimming with colors and determination that it was hard to let herself loosen up a little. Being so focused  had a tendnecy to mess with her so hard that when she went for a walk she had no idea that she walked right into the bar without realizing. “ Oh?” Ramsey replied, taking a moment to realize where she had walked. “That is a good question. “ She added tilting her head to think about what she wanted. “ Something that’s a pretty color......or vodka”

Nikolai stares at her with no discernible expression, before deciding that one of her screw is loose, and deciding not to care. How arrogant do you have to be to think that the universe cares about your own selfishness? “Pretty sure my guess is better than yours.” He mutters under the breath. From what he could tell, this shitshow of a town has a habit of conjuring magical bullshits every now and then. This must be one of those. He sighs at her response. “Does this place look safe to you,” he says before walking down the street, past the crazy girl. He tried, and honestly he has a better thing to do. She is not his responsibility. “Brilliant. I’m sure your rambling is gonna keep you safe. Good luck with that.” 

Ramsey tilted her head in amusement at his comment. She was rattled and frazzled but the comment had sent her on a different emotional journey for a brief moment. She was not following him really, because she was still residing on another planet in that moment. “ Hmm. It’s apples and orangutans. What’s to say what is truth in a world filled of the unbelievable” She replied holding her arms out acknowledging the craziness in town. She may have missed a lot in reality but every once in a while, something hit. “ No..... but safe is a concept. I’m just trying to find familiar” Ramsey mused before shaking her head. “ It hasn’t killed me so far. Except maybe almost five minutes ago. Good shot by the way” She replied looking past the man just trying to keep her eyes open for anything. The nerves were starting to get to her again the longer she stood there

“Oh, it’s sleeping? Shhh…” He dropped his voice down to a whisper. “You know, I think I can get used to a sleeping town. I come from a place that never sleeps, so I like the change of pace.” He had been observing Ramsey along with the rest of the townscape, and saw that the girl seemed to be going at her own pace in life; he could appreciate that. It had taken him a long time to allow himself that freedom, and he admired those who lived unabashedly. Although, he made sure to delineate the distinction between that and being shameless, and immediately Seiha popped into his head. 

His thoughts were interrupted by the sudden scream, and he almost made to reach for his weapon. “What’s wrong? Did the town wake up?” But the moment he heard her explanation, he let out a sigh of relief as tried to play off reaching for his weapon like he had an odd itch. “Oh, yeah. Totally. I can understand what you mean. One of my younger siblings feels the same way,” he nodded. Truthfully, he could never quite see animals as friends, and though he was never power hungry enough like his elders to see animals as slaves, he admittedly saw them more as specimens to study or beautify. “There’s no need to apologise. In fact, I like the way you think… Sorry, what’s your name? I’m Ryo, by the way.” He held his hand out for a shake. 

“ Well it certainly can’t stay awake all the time. If we need rest the town must too. So much happens here, I’d need a nap if I were it” Ramsey smiled as she looked around the area. She found it almost dreamy in a way how quiet and calm everything seemed to be. It was such a change from how she grew up. In the woods on a commune without electricity and anything semi normal. “ Oh what sort of place is this?” She asked tilting her head slightly as she took in the town once more. 

“ I wish something else would wake” Ramsey sighed as she tried to get her feelings back in order. It was never an easy task since the witch had a hard time hiding her eccentricities let alone her feelings. “ It’s hard to see this. It’s never easy and I’ve seen it before, but I was worried. I thought it was someone I knew. “ She replied turning back to him a little surprised at his kindness to her response. “ Oh? Oh, I - thank you. “ She replied before wiping her hand to make sure it was clean before she shook his hand. “ It’s Ramsey...It’s nice to meet you. It’s nice to meet anyone around this time of night”

Nikolai walks past the woman who seems disheveled and maybe feverish. He yanks out the axe from the trunk as if it was a knife stuck in soft butter. “That’s some self-centered theory you’ve got there, mate.” He speaks flatly, dusting the wood chips off of the axe. It disappears again into his coat. He counts a few more of those figures floating about. He seriously considers using this girl as a bait and then going to find his brother and Rafael. She survived this long on her own, and her safety is none of his problem… but then he has these little voices in his head that go ‘what did we talk about being an asshole, Nik’ and ‘that’s not nice’ which each sounds a lot like his boyfriend or Lockhart… “How about you go find some place safe instead of wandering aimlessly,” he suggests with a begrudging sigh. “Don’t let those things touch you.” Being decent is such a nuisance, he thinks to himself, rolling his eyes. And I don’t even get paid.

Rmasey’s eyes were still wide from seeing the weapon, but soon she turned and noted the words he were saying to here and only responded in a way that the witch was prone too, but rambling about nonsense. “ Maybe. It could be me, it could be universe projecting about selfishness it could be because the moon is in the seventh house. I’ve never seen this before so your guess is as good as mine, good sir” Ramsey replied shrugging her shoulders. She was a wreck and she was a mess, but the strange sort of delirium she found herself in was usually always there without the arrival of these phantoms. “ Was I not doing that?” She asked tilting her head and looking around. She had genuinely assumed she was trying to find somewhere safe but she was clearly wrong. “ Yep, no problem” She nodded, knowing that wouldn’t be a problem. Ramsey didn’t let anyone close enough to her to touch her. She was on a different planet but she was also very guarded.

Date: 1 January 2021 Time: 00:23 AM Location: Irving Square

Staying close to the shadow, Nikolai observes opaque figures gliding through the street and clinging to people. From what he can tell, these things attack people and drain them of something, perhaps their life as lamias do– but they need to touch their victims, it seems… They don’t seem to be a threat to werewolves, but he should still go find Yuri, and make sure Rafael is doing okay too. So when one of the figures approach him, Nikolai calmly dodges out of the way. Speed and reflexes may not be his strongest suit, but they are far superior than some flimsy shadows. He pulls out a handaxe from underneath his coat and hurls it at the shadow. The axe passes right through, almost hits another survivor behind, and embeds itself on the tree. “Brilliant.” He grumbles under the breath. “It had to be another magic bullshit, of course.” 

Ramsey was used to odd. It was a currency in her life that she had seemed to always be the one who dealt with strange situations or was herself called strange, but this was something entirely new and frighting. She was often on a whole other planet, but now she was lucid and somewhat terrified. The people in her past she had been haunted by in her mind seemed to take a physical form on some level and they were trying to drill in the fact that their own deaths were her fault. She could have prevented this if she hadn’t been so scared. This left Ramsey feeling drained and emotional as she tried her best to get away, nearly losing her head in the process as an axe passes over her. “ Yeesh” She replied touching the top of her head with wide eyes as she looked up at the owner of the weapon. However, he was far less intimidating than dozens of voices blaming her for her own shortcomings as a witch. “ Is it?” She asked looking at him. “ I just assumed my thoughts got fed up with being trapped in my brain and have escaped to hunt me down? “ She explained, being completely serious in her tone, despite sounding also rattled by events“ This makes sense too”

Date: 8 December 2020 Time: 13:21 PST Location: Main street, Downtown

“Mum wasn’t kidding when she said this place was quiet…” Ryo thought out loud as he walked through the heart of the small town; it was decidedly less busy than London ever could be. Finding the help he needed wasn’t going to be as easy as he thought. As he once again became absorbed in thought about where to head next, a familiar smell came his way. The scent of death. 

Looking up, his eyes narrowed at a raccoon laying unceremoniously on the pavement up ahead — roadkill. Rather than avoid it like some other passerby, he crouched down to examine the animal closer and was able to determine it was beyond preserving. “Ah, a damn shame…” Ryo muttered before getting back up. “Raccoons are quite cute little things, too. They just get a bad rap for being resourceful. Can’t blame ‘em when we’re all just out here trying to live, right?”

Ramsey was walking home after grabbing a bite to eat. She was sometimes a wreck in the kitchen when it required using an oven and the cold weather usually meant using the thing, so she avoided a potential disaster by eating take out. She was lost in her thoughts, staring dreamily at the sky, before stopping when she thought someone was talking to her. “ Oh. The town must be sleeping. Sometimes it’s not so quiet around her. “ She explained

Her dreamy tone change at seeing the sight of a raccoon in the road. The witch screamed a moment, scared the dead animal was in fact her friend that lived behind her apartment. She connected to animals more than people and for a moment her world crumbled at the thought her friend was gone. She ran over only to realize it was a different one. Ramsey was still upset but there was a sense of relief in her body language now. “I’m sorry. I thought I knew them” She muttered. “ They make good friends. An animal is always a good friend”

“You’re… okay. I guess that makes sense.” He had to scratch his head on that one. He could see why she wouldn’t trust an optometrist, but her reasoning was bizarre and hard to follow. At least for his little werewolf brain. “And if you don’t have glasses?” he pondered, trying to poke the bear. “What about that spell?”

“It does?” Ramsey replied with a surprised sound to her voice. She believed she made sense with everything she said, but that didn’t mean she was met with the same sort of response back. “ Can’t say. Conjure a Sunglass Hut?” She replied shrugging her shoulders. “If you mess with too many spells you upset the balance of the universe. Some thing’s are meant to be as they really are whether annoying or not”

“Stoooooop, I hate thinking about you stripping! Gross!” he chuckled, hands shooting up to his ears like earmuffs. He didn’t want to see his innocent friend in that light. He let his hands fall and cocked his head at her. “What’s a white sauce? I only have known red sauce. Oh my god have I been missing out? I do love the tiny edible trees though! Now what do we need for white sauce?” He made his way to the kitchen to write down a grocery list in his illegible handwriting. “Who all did you meet? Anyone cute? Anyone interesting? Anyone funny? Anyone to bring home to? I wanna know,” he laughed, acting like an overbearing father figure, which was fun because he didn’t have any children of his own. 

“But it still happened, floating around like some ether of nudity. “ Ramsey replied throwing her hands up like this was a normal conversation about normal things. Not topics like stripping. “ It’s a sauce that’s made with like cram, butter and cheese? Or something like that. It’s good. I could eat my body weight in pasta. Asparagus also grows like a weird little haunted forest too. “ She replied before looking into her fridge to see if they had the ingredients they needed. She was still so not used to normal society, but it helped her to have people around that also seemed as if they were like her. Completely starting anew. “ I believe everyone is beautiful that I meet, but I don’t really bring people home. I don’t really even make physical contact with people.....too much pressure” Ramsey explained.

“Yes! What food do we have then? What do you want to eat for lunch all week? Spaghetti? Broccoli? Let’s raid the fridge.” He grinned, offering a hand to help Ramsey off the chair. “Have you met any other Riverborn or interesting folks around here, RamBam? You’re still pretty new, no?” Newer than Gage, at least. He’d been here for two years already! 

“All week? That seems very monotonous. I mean broccoli and spaghetti actually is pretty damn good with a white sauce, plus I just love looking at anything that looks like tiny trees. “ She hopped off the chair and smiled up at Gage, who was still taller than her despite being slightly above average height. “ No, you’re still my only one. I like to think I’m social, but then again. I’m less social than I was when I was a stripper. The paint doesn’t talk back typically” She joked. “But then again I find everyone interesting. I met some interesting people trying to chase the raccoon that lives behind my apartment”

“Okay, making paper by hand sounds really rad” he grinned. He didn’t think of himself having any skills, at least worthwhile skills (killing wasn’t very practical). “Ramsey, I… no, that isn’t necessary.” He shook his head at her asking for references. “Here, you can have your name back,” he said, offering to shake her hand, tucking in an imaginary piece of paper as if he were actually handing her name back. He liked to oblige people, especially the sweet ones. This one was only a child. “Do you need to get your eyes checked? Is running into people a common occurrence? Maybe we can find an optometrist together. Unless of course you have a spell for that as well”

“Oh.... no one ever sad that before? They always ask why we didn’t just go to the store, but we weren’t into that sort of thing” Ramsey replied surprised by his response, but it left a genuine smile on her face as a result. “ Oh well then. They are both rather nice names.....Also more likely to be last names over a first name “ She realized. She was specifically named Ramsey since it was her mothers maiden name, so he name literally was a last name. “ Not that I know of. These eyes are shiny and new. No I do not trust an eye doctor. Who makes the decision to just check the eyes. I’m sure there is one, but it is quite a selfish spell. Don’t fix your eyes fix your glasses”

Bubbles walked to and from Imani and the girl, before eventually flopping down next to them. The she-wolf smiled and nodded in agreement as she gave the pup a look of adoration. Even with the cone of shame, the canine still manages to look cute. “Yup that’s Bubbles, she’s forever cute.” Eyeing the painting, Imani slowly nodded as the blonde spoke on about how she was okay despite the nasty fall. “True, do you boo.” She the pointed at her portfolio and asked, “So what’s the story behind that painting?” 

“Oh what a fun name!” Ramsey nodded as she glanced back at the dog once more. It looked like her work wasn’t too messed up. If anything had actually happened damaging she would have passed it off as intentional. “ Bubbles. Everyone loves bubbles.....I can’t see how anyone wouldn’t love this Bubble” She chuckled before glancing at her portfolio. “ Oh everyone has a story whihc is true I guess...... I mean the story is a very pretty lady had seen my work from before and wanted something, but it’s hard to make something from nothing at times.  I like to paint using people’s aura’s. It’s hard to paint if there’s no spark there. It took me a while, but this was what I had come up with.” She replied gesturing at a rather scattered in thought and avant garde but pretty painting of a woman.
