From the various accounts I've read/viewed, ICE and the FBI dragged residents out of their homes at 2am whether citizens or not and detained them for hours in vans. They even dragged out children, some naked, and zip tied them together. They ransacked and vandalised apartments, stole belongings, and may have urinated in some areas.
Many residents have now abandoned the building.
And the so-called excuse for this is the targetting of Venezuelan gang members, but the reality is that this is nothing but the ongoing racist terrorism by so-called law enforcement.
South Shore is a predominantly Black neighborhood: 92.6% Black, with Latinos making up just 2.6%.
Why would a Venezuelan gang that is apparently virtually unknown in all of Chicago be there?
And some people are still trying to normalise this.
And shouldn't Budget and U-Haul be held to account for their role?

Residents describe a scene that looked more like a war zone than a law enforcement operation. Flash bangs echoed through the streets.
āThey [community] was terrified. The kids was crying. People were screaming. They looked very distressed. I was out there crying when I seen the little girl come around the corner, because they was bringing the kids out too, had them zip tied to each other,ā Ebony Watson told a local reporter.
āThatās all I kept asking. Whereās the morality? Whereās the human[ity]? One of them literally laughed. He was standing right here. He said: Fāk them kids,ā Watson added.
When residents returned after the chaos, they found apartments ransackedāwalls damaged, furniture smashed, and windows broken. The damage wasnāt just physical. Families say the terror of being treated like enemy combatants in their own homes will linger far longer.
āThey just treated us like we were nothing,ā Patricia Fisher said. āIt was scary, because Iāve never had a gun put in my face. They asked my name and my date of birth and asked me, did I have any warrants. And I told them, No, I didnāt.ā
Fisher, an elderly Black woman, recalled being handcuffed and detained despite having committed no crime. She said she wasnāt released until 3 a.m.
āLike they had it planned out for weeks. It was like a movie. I got it recorded on my phone and everything. It was like a movie. It was, it was really scary. They had my boyfriend locked up,ā Marlee Sanders told CBS news.āHeās black. Yeah, heās a citizen,ā Sanders added.
ICE later confirmed 37 arrests. But when pressed on who was actually targeted and why, the Department of Homeland Security pointed to the ongoing government shutdown as an excuse for withholding details.
