After the Dawn (musical)
Poetry
Little snippet of an idea I have something later in the musical:
Montu
My friend, when will you lay down your scepter?
You do not always have to be the crown’s protector
Set
My friend, my brother in arms
Don’t tell me you’re leaving behind our fight
Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for the boy king’s charms
Order is not the only way to be right!
Montu
My friend, my brother in arms, my brother in blood
You and I have drug each other up from the mud
Set (spoken)
Don’t-
Montu
And you and I might both be Gods of War
But what is this fight even for?
Because you, my brother, live for the fight,
But I, my friend, fight for the light
Claim The Throne
Song Two
Lyrics
Horus:
I am the rumor, no whispered lie
A ghost in flesh of what you left to die
Osiris’s blood lives on in every breath
I bridge the line between he and death
Set:
You think a ghost can reach for gold?
Could you even bear its weight?
I never knew a ghost could be so bold
I wear this crown by strength, not fate
Horus:
I came not here to break the lands
I came not here to make demands
The truth, that is the burden I bear
While chaos and disorder is what you share
I claim my birthright- hear me now!
To a usurper I will not cow!
Set (laughing):
Usurper? Little falcon, what a sharp tongue
Your spirit is young and your eyes bright
Speaking as though the crown you’ve won
You think blood alone makes you right?
Horus:
I hold the right to the throne in my veins
I am Osiris’s legacy that remains!
Set:
For this crown, you don’t know the storms I’ve braved
For these lands, you don’t know the enemies I’ve slain
I have been steadfast while others caved
Because I will not cow to pain
For this crown, you think your blood is enough
For these lands, you think your legacy is required
You think that you’re up to snuff?
Just because you’re a spawn Osiris sired?
Horus:
I am no fool, I toy not with fate
But you force my hand and I will not wait
I demand the elder Gods give their decree
A divine tribunal, I call on thee
Set:
So you need others to pave your way?
Then summon the Elders and all their might
Between us both, the crown will stay
Let them see whose claim is right

The Crown Awaits
Song One
Lyrics
Horus:
Born under the hush of stars
Raised in silence between sandbars
My name, the world was meant not to speak
While I lived in a creek.
I had to watch the sun rise without me
My crown left on a head it was never meant to be
Set:
They say a falcon flies again
That Osiris’s blood dares draw breath
As though I hadn’t left him way back when
Like he shouldn’t only know death.
I am the King of all that I see, of all men
While his father is holding a sneath
Horus & Set:
I am done waiting by the shore
Of being spared the truth
Horus:
The crown was never meant for chaos and war
Set:
The crown I owe to strength not youth
Set:
I will never give my crown to some half-formed heir
This crown is mine, all mine
It’s a burden the weak could never bear
I am the one that deserves this power divine
Horus:
I won’t come seeking war nor praise
I’m not there to set the throne ablaze
Set:
Let a child come with dreams and light
Let that boy preach of law and hope
Horus:
I am every prayer that’s gone unanswered
Set:
I am the one who’s always been hampered
Horus:
Every soul who waits for the dawn
Set:
My fight, my strength, is far from gone
Horus:
Worry not, Osiris’s blood lives on!
Set:
I won’t lose to the dead’s spawn!
Horus:
The crown will be won
Set:
I will not be out done!
Horus (spoken):
Set.

My heart sings for my muse who stands
Clad in black like the night sky forgoing littered stars
Her dress draping, flowing, like a nymph’s dance.
Hair of ink itself drawn from a midnight well
Eyes of moonlit pools where mortals ought dare not go
Gaze that holds my heart like a tempest in check.
Her smile, playful, gentle, so unaware of my heart’s ache
That the God’s Themselves would pause mid-feast
To watch the gentle upturning of lips like unfurled anemones.
O Muse of my heart, of my never ending soul
If Apollo Himself ever brought His chariot near,
Pause would He to warm the earth beneath your feet.
My beloved does not have eyes
But stars trapped in lapis set upon her face
With a gaze that commands stillness in all things
For it stills even the air of my lungs.
My beloved does not have fingers
But lotus petals given new purpose
And I pray that that purpose becomes
Finding the patterns of my flesh.
My beloved does not have a voice
But a song that is every word
That turns the air between us to silk
So that even the space between us is thin.
And in her presence the ibis’s cry is silenced
The Nile’s rolling has slowed.
In awe of such stunning grace
I offer my heart as a basin
And my lips as a sistrum.
For my heart now exists to hold the overflow of her soul
As it is not mine, but hers to use.
For my lips now exist to praise, honor and delight her
As they are now giving an offering to her with every breath.
Lady of my eye
Whose hair is the rich soil of Hapi’s flood
Whose skin fuels the aching desire of flesh
Whose smile is a blessing of Hathor Herself
Whose presence nourishes the barren fields of my heart,
Allow me to sweep the path before you clean
With my own very breath,
To scatter lotus petals where your feet fall
As a testament to your everlasting grace.
For in my eyes you are a woman no longer
But the only shrine I wish to maintain,
My incense can no longer burn for the Gods alone
As it is not Them I am now seeking my blessings from,
Your body is the shrine I long to worship at
Let me care for your home as though it was a temple
And never again will war or famine or plague come onto you
For I will be the most dedicated follower
And even the Gods’ own cults will not match my dedication.
My heart only sails for you
My beloved, the secret to ascension.
Your eyes are carved of lapis lazuli
The stones of the Gods Themselves
Serene, deep and endless.
Your hair has been blessed by the Nile itself
Soil brought up from its depths
Flowing dark and abundant
Rich with the promise of future.
Your skin is the petals of a lotus
Milk and silk
A renewal of my very faith,
For if I were to touch it
I’d be touching Atum’s blessing itself.
My ka turns like a perch of the Nile
And my stolen breath leaves my lungs light
For each time your smile graces my eyes
I recall even the stars’ envy.
So, with a hand lifted to Nut
And my heart laid bare
I offer you to wear my name.
Let my love for you be known so openly
That it lays as a collar of gold on your skin.
