“Nice to meet you too…” He said with a polite smile. “So– um… how are you?”
“I’m alright.” Just tired from sleepless nights and worrying. “Thanks for asking.”
hannahbananamendez:
“Ever been to the garden before?”
“A few times, yeah.” Hayden smiled. “Lead the way.”
maeveholmes
Maeve hadnt expected to hear a voice. She was out here practically hiding of course. The aim was to be left alone. So when a disembodied voice finished her jittery attempts. Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter. She could almost here Reggie mutter it beside her. But that wasnt Reggie. Which meant that someone had found her and knew that she was stupid.
Knees drew closer to her chest, hand clutching the book and toying with the aged page. The other hand tugged at her hair as she waited for someone to appear. To be told off, to be laughed at.
Hayden sat there quietly for a little longer. It didn’t cross her mind to think whoever was around was stupid, Hayden wasn’t like that generally. She didn’t judge for, well, really much of anything. She let a few more moments of silence pass and then she turned her head but stayed sitting where she was. “Do you want me to read it to you?”
Run Rabbit Run Rabbit
Maeve had sequestered herself away in a shaded corner of the garden. Buried in the embrace of decaying leaves, flowers to her left and right. Only a small sliver of the building was visible around the bus. It was quiet. No one was out here to bother her.
In her hand was a children’s picture book she had swiped from the library. It was The Tale Of Peter Rabbit. Reggie had tried to help her reading skills with Beatrix Potters books. Fingers bounded beneath the words, tracing the sentences slowly with her finger.
“Once… U.. Upon a time” She started reading in a soft mumble. “There.. were.. four l-little rabbits. And their names were…” Maeve paused, leaning closer to scrutinise the word. The rabbits names had always been confusing to read. “F…. F… Fl.. Flopsy?” The girl almost posed the question to her self, looking up ready to see Reggies reassuring face but only being greeted with a rose bud.
Hayden had just checked in on her daughter. Sadie was a fighter and Hayden just wished that she could take her away from this place. Go home. She liked her job and she was so grateful for everything, the treatment for Sadie, all of it... but Hayden longed to give her daughter a normal life.
She moved out into the gardens, situating herself on a little bench in the corner, a notebook in her hand but her head pretty much in the clouds because she had so much going on up there that it was hard to focus on much of anything.
The voice caught her off guard, making her jump, and she took a few moments to realise where it was even coming from. “Flopsy.. Mopsy, Cottontail, and Peter.” Hayden murmured out loud, in a gentle tone of voice, unable to help herself because she knew the story back and forth by now. Her daughter was obsessed with it... with all of them.
elliotxharper:
“I– N-No it’s okay!” Elliot was used to being the one apologizing… not the other way around! He wasn’t quite expecting it, nor did he know how to respond. He felt bad for making her feel the need to apologize, though… “Umm— h-have I introduced myself yet? I… I’m Elliot.”
She smiled at him warmly. “Well, it’s very nice to meet you, Elliot. My name’s Hayden.”
Winnie had only been there for a couple of days, yet she already knew she couldn’t stay any longer. Being trapped with the Sterlings was tortuous enough, but now she was in a place where it felt like everyone was just watching you? What was the good in that? Where was the fun in that? Winnie wasn’t crazy or sick… She was just a kid who wanted to live and have fun. Why was that so worrisome? Shouldn’t it be concerning when a kid didn’t want to live and have fun? She let out a deep sigh as she roamed the halls. Suddenly she came across a locked door– which wasn’t surprising. Most of the doors were locked… but her boredom was sky high, and her annoyance and frustration were both just as high. In hopes of something exciting or at least something vaguely interesting, she knelt down beside the door and started to pick the lock with a paperclip she previously snatched.
Hayden was walking from Sadie’s room, having used her break to check in on her little girl. She seemed to be doing alright today and that made Hayden feel more at ease. Her thoughts were jumbled enough due to sleep deprivation due to last nights nightmares about her father from the past but she was doing her best to just keep that stuff bottled up where it belonged. As she walked, she almost missed the girl but she had to turn back around to go down another corridor, and she eventually came across her. “What you got there?”
elliotxharper:
“Yeah– maybe.” He said with a soft shrug. He bit his lip, thinking about calling him. After a few seconds, he just shook his head. “I don’t think so…—He’ll probably be too busy, y’know? He’s a busy guy… and… I don’t know– I just… He’ll probably be having fun with his other friends and all, and I just–” He let out a heavy sigh, offering another shrug.”I’d probably just bring the mood down…”
Hayden nodded, though didn’t really know what else to say then. He was probably just beating himself up unnecessarily but still. “I’m sorry.”
elliotxharper:
Elliot nodded in response. It did sound nice… the only problem was that he couldn’t go. “No– I haven’t really… been here for a long time, and–” It didn’t help that he still refused to talk in therapy or group. Part of him wanted to. He wanted to just get everything off his chest, all of the anger and frustration and despair he’d been holding inside. Besides, that same part of him also knew he’d probably be making the staff’s jobs a whole lot easier if he was just honest with them. Still, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he just didn’t matter. That his problems weren’t really problems at all. Everyone had to deal with hardship, that’s part of life… the only different was that Elliot was too weak to just get over them himself. “Maybe I’ll try to call him later? I don’t know…” His friend probably wouldn’t even want to talk to Elliot. He’d just be mad and disappointed that Elliot wasn’t there with him to celebrate his birthday. It was probably better for everyone if he just didn’t call— He’d probably just be bothering his friend by calling.
Hayden offered him a soft smile. “Maybe your friend can visit sometime and make up for it..” She suggested, trying to come up with some alternative that might be at least semi positive. “I’m sure he’d love a call from you though!” She replied with a nod, smiling a little brighter. She felt bad if he was down about it, Hayden didn’t like to see people hurting or struggling.
elliotxharper:
He nodded, trying to smile in return. “Yeah…—It’s my… It’s my friend’s birthday kind of soon, and… we sort of had plans, you know?” He felt like he was letting his best friend down for being in the hospital rather than celebrating with him… He also felt like he was letting just about everyone down for being stuck at Brielle. His father most of all… His dad was going through enough hardship, and Elliot just always seemed to cause more stress for him. Even when his dad tried to shrug it off and force a reassuring smile, Elliot could tell he was making things worse. He always did.
Hayden smiled back at him,. “That sounds nice.” Birthdays. Not that she celebrated many except her daughter’s nowadays. “Are you eligible for day passes?” She wondered, not sure what his situation was or how long he was here or anything.
hannahbananamendez:
Well, that was something. “Sure! I wouldn’t mind that.”
“Lead the way then.” She smiled back at her, not minding.
“I’m a lot better– from when I first got here, you know.” He stated, to no one in particular. Really, just the closet person. “I…—I learned a lot and everything… I just– I don’t belong here…” Only the thing was, he hadn’t learned anything. He still felt as if any confrontation in the slightest would cause the sky to fall, and he still had absolutely zero self worth… Not to mention his urges of self harm only seemed to get worse and worse each day. His claim that he didn’t belong there couldn’t be further from the truth. Of course he belonged there…. he needed help. Deep down, he knew it was true. However, he still felt as though he didn’t deserve help. Besides, there were other people who needed help more than he did… he’d just be taking up the doctors time and energy when they should have been spending that on people who had real problems.
Hayden looked over at him and smiled in response to his comments. She didn’t really know if he was speaking to her or not but she wanted to be polite and couldn’t help herself anyway. He was clearly here for a reason but Hayden didn’t think drawing attention to that would be beneficial. “Sounds like you just can’t wait to get home, huh?”
hannahbananamendez:
“I swear it’s not as horrible as you think. Maybe you’ll like something?”
“I don’t think so, sweetie. I can come keep you company though.”
“I know this sounds like the worst thing in the world to some people but, do you want to work out with me?”
“Honestly, I am a very unfit person.” Hayden laughed. “But I can keep you company.”
“I holding it for friend…“
“Oh wow.... hey kiddo maybe I should take that for you?”
skylar-melanto:
Skylar appreciated the help, just about managing to shuffle back into her chair she let out a sigh of relief but she still felt sore, though the idea of seeing the nurses made her groan. “They jus’ like poking me”
“I know, I know...” She said at the groan, managing a tiny smile because she could understand the frustration. “I really want to make sure you’re okay though... alright?”
Well, here she was- back in Brielle’s familiar halls, clutching a notebook in her hands. She wondered how long her mom would keep her here this time. A year? A month? The mind of Tanya Liddell was hard to predict. Not much seemed to have changed in the building. She thought briefly of checking on her old friends, but decided against it. They’d probably gone home by now. Instead she made her way to the music room. Her hands itched for the touch of the keys- to play something that might make everything alright. Which would have been fine- if she could remember where the music room was. Everything in this building looked the same.
Reluctantly, she tapped a passer-by on the shoulder, stammering out in words barely louder than a whisper. “Ex-Excuse me…”
Hayden was tired beyond belief but she was doing her best to stay awake and keep going. Keep the energy up until she could fall into bed and forget the day. Work was becoming monotonous and tiresome and she wished Sadie were well enough to leave.
She was heading to her daughter’s room at that moment when the tap on the shoulder came. She turned her head and did her best to work up a smile. “Yes?”
“I’m kinda busy so please, go and bother someone else.”
“Me?”
