Indenture / The majority of Indian South Africans are the descendants of indentured workers brought to Natal between 1860 and 1911 to develop the sugar industry in this province. These indentured workers were under contract to work for a defined period of time, usually without pay but in exchange for free passage from India to South Africa. In 1911, India prohibited the indentured labour to Natal because of the ill treatment of its citizens in the Province. Today Durban is the largest ‘Indian’ city outside India. The Guardian Angels / As their moniker suggests these self appointed angels guard 'your treasure while you're at leisure.' Echoing the impetus of the infamous New York subway Guardian Angels of the 80's, this group of car guards have taken it upon themselves to take the law into their own hands and prevent car park crime for a small fee.

Born out of crime and survival the Guardian Angels of the Durban beachfront were conceived in 1995 when Paul Gibb and a few of his friends, often on the wrong side of the law, caught a fleeing offender that had just broken into a car and stolen some valuables. The owners gave them money in gratitude and relief. They saw the potential of this unexpected random event to stay off the street and 'keep the law off their back.'

The Guardian Angels grew through word of mouth from 5 members to 19 today, all in some way compromised by life. With the surfing community as their main demographic the surfers started handing the Angels their car keys for safe keeping and soon a unique form of trust and symbiosis developed.

MEMENTOS FROM A CITY VILLAGE / Hotel Magazine.

In political speak Oude Molen is a socio-economic development. In layman’s terms it’s known as a hybrid eco village. What is often forgotten is that Oude Molen is a place that people call home.

All the buildings form part of a defunct psychiatric hospital that was once for non-white patients and cared for prior to our country's liberation in 1994. After that the patients got relocated to a better facility a little way off, and so this part of the medical complex known as Valkenberg became a white elephant, deteriorating to rubble and squalor at the hands of looters and vandalism.

In 1997 a man called Gary Glass along with a man named Hudson McComb took on this public space, mobilising local communities around the property to convert and restore this forgotten, derelict, vandalised and somewhat spooky place into a thriving, public social enterprise.
