So I've seen the question "If Jor-El was negotiating a cease-fire, why did Krypton try to invade Earth anyways?" floating around the tag.

I have two theories about that.

1: Krypton was super-fucked and needed either A: to start importing resources pronto even if they had to steal them from an inhabited planet, or B: they needed to colonize a New Krypton pronto and Earth met every requirement. By this point, Krypton wouldn't have had many qualms about squashing an existing population.

2: Darkseid's ultimate goal is to obtain the Anti-Life Equation. Earth is the key to doing that (i don't remember the specifics). The deal Apocalips brought to the negotiating table might have been something like: "Conquer this little planet for us, prove your willingness to serve Darkseid, and we'll spare the Kryptonian race." Jor-El wouldn't know about the Anti-Life Equation and I think Krypton was in too dire straits for him to question why Apocalips wanted this one little planet.
