Rant about Zuko and shipping. And a little bit about how the other side views Aang's character in a bad light while praising Zuko.
I need to get this off my chest.
I make the mistake of going to their Reddit every now and then. Not to leave comments, but to just look because they have cute art and I like some of it. But the amount of glaze they have towards Zuko and hate for Aang, on the few posts that allow it, I got happy when their mods started to take down hate posts because the sub was for the love of their ship, not to hate on other ships. like. How I came to understand how the whole stupid divide in the community works is: on our side, we don't hate Zuko; we love Zuko as a character. Sure it exist some people with bad arguments, but that is impossible to avoid. But on their side, acting like we are the ones who have bad takes on Zuko, while they're sitting there like, "So Aang is like Ozai if he was worse." ofc not those words, but you get the picture I am painting.
I feel like a lot of people here don't even hate them as a ship; they just hate the shippers for being who they are and have been. I would love to ask them where they get these ideas from. I feel like a lot of them just run into the bad part of the shipping, and now the whole gang of that ship is bad. And it's very bad to view it that way. Like I seen the most disgusting takes from their side, but I would never think all of them have those bad-faith takes.
Also, one argument I keep seeing is "they hate the ship because it threatens their canon." How would their ship threaten canon in any way? Like, we know they get married and have 3 kids. The only way for their ship to threaten canon is if they did a complete retcon.
Also, I saw them hate on those people in the main sub who want a solo Katara movie, want to see her and Aang have a family together, and shit, and omg, that is horrible. They are only seeing Katara as Aang's wife. I feel like a lot of people here don't. We just want to see how they worked as a family, as that is cute. Besides, had their ship been canon, people would have said that about Katara and Zuko. They most likely wouldn't even bat an eye. Ofc I do hope we get a proper solo movie with her, besides her being a mother, but getting one where we see her and Aang raise their family would be cute.
I love seeing them diminish the friendship between Katara and Aang all the time, straight up getting what happened in episodes wrong or reading between the lines that don't exist. And also propping up Katara and Zuko's bond to a high degree. Acting like Zuko is the only one to ever understand her like ever. My opinion on the relationships Zuko got with the gang in the end was that Aang became his best friend. Sokka, his brother-in-arms, and Katara, the little sister he never got in Azula. I'm not sure what to count Toph as: the little gremlin that lives in the basement? And him and Suki, not sure, not really read the comics, so will need to get around to doing that. But jokes aside, I think he formed a different bond with all of them. But they seem to only care about the one between Katara and Zuko and make it out to be something it wasn't.
But I learned how they view things. They are the true fans of the show and understand it on a deeper level than even the creator; they are the true feminists and are mostly women in that group. The Kataang shippers are mostly men who hate women and only view them as property, and are praising and seeing Bryke as their god, never question him, and are devil spawn or something. Not that you can really prove any of that. Same with it is impossible to prove which ship is more popular, because getting every fan of Avatar to vote and care to vote will be impossible. Also, one argument I saw was apparently that Bryke is mad Zuko is more popular than Aang. I honestly don't see it, and also, like, it is very, very rare for an IP to have its MC as the most popular. I can't think of many shows/movies/books where people would say, "The MC is my fav character."
Sorry if I was mean to anyone or got some info wrong; I am only human, after all, and can get some info wrong. I might also have misremembered the show on some bits, and don't be scared to correct me on that, as long as it is civil. And even if this is more of a question towards their side, I'm still gonna anti them, as what I've seen, this can be seen as an anti post towards them, and I don't want to start anything, which is also why I avoid saying their ship name, as I heard Tumblr accidently push it to their feed just from me writing it even if the post is tagged anti.
The love between Katara and Aang
Something I love about Kataang is the slow burn of it, like they are allowed to be friends first, lovers second, and that is just really cute, like I feel like a lot of shows, in the Cave of Two Lovers episode, when they first officially kiss, I feel like a lot of others stories would have now made them a couple directly after, but that isn't really how it works, a kiss doesn't fully mean, now we are dating. And the way they both process their feelings is so nice to see, as they have two different ways to view it.
Aang felt the need to make his feelings known. He wanted Katara to know he loved her and wanted to know if she felt the same. With the war and the fact that he might die, he wanted to get that out. That way, if he died, he wouldn't die with any regret on the subject. Katara, I feel, how she viewed it as: there is a war. We won't have time to dwell on this, as starting a relationship in the middle of everything could be viewed as a distraction from the mission, and just add a extra thing to worry about on top of all of it, because what if she had agreed to date Aang during the Ember Island and than he died in the final, it would just make it more painful, or maybe even, it would surve as a distration with would make her mess up. Like, had the invasion during the black sun worked out, I could see them getting together, but because it failed, and so much shit happened between then and Ember Island, they didn't really have time to talk about it.
I might have gotten one or both characters wrong on this, but I just honestly love how they came at the whole relationship and love from different viewpoints, and both are correct and wrong in their own way. You can see why Aang would want to get it all out before he might die, but also why Katara would want them to only focus on ending the war for now; the other can come after, which it did. I also love the fact that the last scene of the show takes place a couple of weeks or months after Zuko's coronation. I got both when trying to look it up. But that. I really love that they waited for that for them to be a couple, because it both shows Aang, after his messed-up kiss, learned from it and clearly never pushed Katara into something she was unsure about until she felt ready, and it is realistic to want to wait for thing to get a bit more stable before she commit to a relationship, something that to some people are a really big deal.
Avatar and reruns of the show back in the day and more
Something funny I came to think of lately, I was young when the show aired, and I had so many other different shows I watched back then, so ofc I never really saw the show in chronological order, just saw episodes here and there when they showed up on the channel, but I remember so clearly, it was like the last 4 episodes, and I saw Sozin's comet part 3, and I was like "oh great, so tomorrow this time, they will show me the last episode so I will know what happen." But I must have missed something; the day after, they showed the first episode again, so for the longest time, I never actually saw the final episode of the show and was like, "I wonder what happened." So the last thing my young eye saw was Aang about to be roasted alive. Ofc I eventually did see the final. For some reason, find that very funny. Wonder if anyone else had that happen to them. Also, I never saw the whole Avatar extra with pop-ups, or maybe that wasn't a thing in every country; who knows. Something I do remember was that I shipped the fuck out of Kataang, Maiko, and Sukka. Also, thank god I was too young back then to care about fandom like that. Didn't even have a phone back then or my own computer, so the whole fandom fighting that happened. Honestly, I had no clue a shipping war existed until, like, a month-ish back when I ran into Kataang hate on TikTok randomly and did a nose dive into the mess that is the ATLA fandom. But as much as I saw the most awful takes you can imagine, I saw a lot of amazing fanart and fanfics. And here, the Kataang side on here, just loving the ship and just debunking the bad takes on the other side instead of hating on it, feels so nice to see. Some of you people truly make such amazing art, posts, and fics; it warms one's heart, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for that.
Kataang and Aang and the hate they get.
Don't wanna make my Tumblr all about hate, but. And I will try to post more positive things in the future. Probably gonna do a post about other fandoms I love. I don't get how one side of the fandom hates Aang as much as they do, or loves to tear down every single aspect of Kataang while proping up the other side. They truly love to just make Aang into some kind of villain, make him horrible, and for every mistake he made, they make it the biggest thing ever, and now that is somehow who Aang is. Also, with how every moment of the show gave us a chance to show us how Kataang was gonna be canon, they either just cry. "That was an OOC moment, the real Katara would never." or just completely pretend it never happened. I saw someone point out that if Katara even did half the things she did with Aang towards Zuko, they would 100% use that as proof that she is in love with him. And honestly, with how they take the 1 hug they have as proof, it wouldn't surprise me. But what really gets me is that, first off, they always bring up that he kissed her twice without consent, but the first, or second kiss, I guess, during the black sun, she did kiss him back, and I say second because, if I saw it was true, they did kiss during the Cave of Two Lovers. And if it is 100% canon, it kinda makes the second kiss make even more sense. Ofc the balcony kiss during the Ember Island Players was bad; he shouldn't have done that. But the thing is, in the narrative, it is painted as bad; he knows he did wrong and never did it again. Like, is it bad we never got him to officially apologize to Katara? Like yes ofc, is that even a question. But we never saw Katara officially apologize to Sokka as well about the comment that he didn't love their mother as much as she did. But I feel like most of the community just accepts that she did at some point. But about the first, or second kiss, depending on whether the Cave kiss did happen or not, still very unsure about it; please don't worry about correcting me about it. I don't see Yue getting the same amount of hate for just pulling Sokka into a kiss when he was about to walk away, accepting they wouldn't be able to be together.
Like, I get not liking a ship. You are more than welcome to. You don't have to like every single one, no matter if it is canon or just a fandom ship; more power to you. What I don't understand is the amount of hate they pour out on the canon one here. If you truly love your ship and despise the canon one, wouldn't the energy be better spent on giving love towards the ship you prefer? I know I am a hypocrite for saying that and also making this post, but I am only human after all. Also, I saw a lot of them cry and come at Kataang about how they ignore how problematic the balcony kiss was at Ember Island Players. But I don't get that feeling; I feel like most fans of Kataang 100% agree on the fact that yes, that kiss was bad, and Katara deserved an official apology for that. I honestly love seeing art of other ships, but that one side of the fandom, it is very hard for me to even wanna go there, when so much of the post is instead of being dedicated to love for the ship, just shits on Aang as a character fully. I don't think most sane fans pretend like the canon ship we got was perfect; it had flaws, and it could have been better, but what we got was good, and it truly shows 2 best friends falling for each other. Like, sorry if this sounds rude and gatekeepy. But if you hate a creator of a show as much as they do, or everything in the show so much you have to force your headcanon to be canon in your head for you to enjoy it, why wouldn't you just move on to a new show at that point? Like, I grew up with 1 book series; I think anyone can guess which one without me naming it, and after the creator of that book series started to do stuff I was disgusted by, and honestly, I can't stand them at all. I dropped it completely and moved on to a new book series to love. Because I couldn't stand supporting someone like them anymore.
I made a comment about it on another post, but I feel like if you didn't watch the show and only listened to the haters of Aang in particular. You'd probably go into the show thinking Aang is the secret villain of the show and is the biggest monster to ever exist. Also, now I am just adding stuff as I go along, and this post is just coming across as a mess, so I'm gonna stop it here, but if anyone would wanna discuss it more, you are more than welcome to, as long as it stays civil and you know. Sorry for my long and stupid rant; I know people have said this a million times and are probably so tired of it, but I kinda just needed to get it off my chest.
you know, it would be in so much better faith, if as a fandom we can talk about the misogyny in the writersâ room and even further to executive decisions that donât greenlight projects that center kataraâs stories or stories in the swt but rather the male characters, instead of the bs half this fandom has going on
the bs being âthis aang doesnât support kataraâ bs
itâs like overstated and listed a million times all the ways aang supports katara in the show: actions, words, physical touch - but frankly none of that is really relevant to this post because the fact of the matter is, when it comes to actual content there is indeed a disparity in the content between the pair that tips more in aangâs favor than kataraâs
and because of this, the amount of actual content of katara supporting aang indeed is higher because aang is the central character most of the time
but instead of coming to this rather sound and logical conclusion, there are certain people that would like to have you believe that this means aang would never ever support katara in the⊠5 decades they are together, even though, again, this is not the precedent set in the original series, despite what the same certain people would like to have you believe.
case in point:
the north and south comic run (after FOUR COMICS - THREE of which. three. 3. center zuko and the fire nation: the promise, the search, smoke and shadow. ONE which centers aang (and toph kinda); the rift) north and south is the FIRST post-canon content that focuses on katara and attempts to do some character study and swt exploration:
and what exactly did aang do in that comic?
well first of all, he isnât even in the first part. but we do see him in kataraâs flashbacks. when she is actively missing her boyfriendâs support in the face of extreme and harsh changes to her homeland because she saw him react the exact same way in the aforementioned âthe riftâ.
almost like she relies on him? but no that canât be cuz i was told sheâs actually his mother and that wouldnât make sense
in the second part, aang arrives halfway through and immediately starts pampering, babying and physically supporting katara. for the rest of the run, he quite literally serves zero purpose outside of being kataraâs boyfriend. he acts like a booktok boyfriend, has absolutely zero character development, is practically her sidekick when it comes to fights and verbally supports her as well.
does that sound familiar? hmm itâs almost like everything katara is accused of being reduced to her in her relationship with aang, whenever aang is the central character and she gives him support. so, itâs almost like when katara is the central character with an arc and a storyline, aang shows her support in all the ways katara does. and itâs almost like maybe we as a community should be pushing for more katara content, to decrease this disparity of content between the two main characters and championing for less content centering any male character (thatâs not sokka cuz he quite literally has nothing â ïž)
i mean there is imbalance which i do consider to be the first actual group comic not only in terms of characterization but also focusing on all 4 characters (yes 4, not 5! thank ya) at a time and giving them a chance to shine. and would you look at that? katara and aang giving each support in the SAME RUN? itâs almost like this is possible when competent writers and people who appreciate the canon ship are at the helm and not a fckass zk shipper
itâs almost like, itâs almost like, itâs almost like
Avatar, the new movie, and a small rant about what some people say about Tagah.
Small Rant Why are some people, when they talk about the new Avatar movie, talking about how Aang didn't listen to his friends when they distrusted Tagah, when in the movie itself, they never say they don't trust him or tell Aang something is wrong? They are fully on board with the quest from the start; the only one we see start to distrust Tagah is Katara when he almost crushes the Denied's ship, but she also doesn't tell Aang that, but confronts Tagah directly when she is alone with him and when Aang left for the staff. The only thing Aang doesn't listen to is near the end of the storm, when Katara says they should turn back; it is too dangerous, but that was because it was dangerous and the rest of the gang agrees, but that was over the storm, not because of Tagah. Did some of the people simply not watch the movie and judge it based on short clips they saw, because that is the only way I can see them having the idea that the gang kept warning Aang about Tagah? Like the movie was far from perfect and had its flaws, but I don't get why they criticize stuff that didn't happen instead of what did. Also, side note, I love those Kataang moments in the movie; they are so cute and wholesome, and I love the fact that Katara wears a yellow belt, and Aang has water tribe beads on his airnomads necklace thing that probably has a name I can't name at the moment.
Me when I spread misinformation about a show on the internet and so called fans believe me because it fit their biases about a certain character :)
1 - Zero surprises, I've been telling you guys these people haven't watched the show in years, if ever, and will latch onto obviously false, easily disprovable claims about Aang being abusive to prop up their own ship.
2 - I've been telling you guys that the "Katara should have kept her scars!" nonsense has always been their attempt to force a parallel with Ozai, as if there's no difference between accidentally hurting someone and deliberately mutilating someone's face.
That is honestly kinda funny tho, honestly, if I saw that, the first thing I would do would be to open up a clip of the show to be like "wait, did I miss remember that or something." and ofc gotten the fact straight directly. I already had a discussion with a Zutara shipper once, and every time they said x happened in y episode, as proof their ship is true. Instead of just blindly agreeing or disagreeing with them, went directly to watch the scene to refresh myself on what really happened. And a lot of the time, they either got the scene completely wrong or they just straight up made up what happened instead or left the context behind the scene altogether to make the scene seem different from what it was. I haven't seen anyone do it, but it would be like taking the scene when Aang told Katara about her necklace when they put on the Fire Nation disguises and being like, "omg, Aang forced Katara to take off her necklace, Zuko would never." and completely leave out the whole, context of them having to disguise themsvles and the necklace is a dead giveaway she is not from the fire nation.
Yes, I'm a Zutara anti. Yes, I'm pro Kataang. Yes, I'll read your criticisms and opinions. I'm open to hearing different perspectives. I might even agree with y-
"Katara is a tradwife breeding mare how dare she have had children with Aang and not Zuko."
"Aang is abusive and only wants her to mother him."
"Katara has no agency."
"Aang = Bear."
"You can't convince me Katara picked the bald loser over the conventionally attractive bad boy with abs and pretty hair."
"The 2 age gap makes it inappropriate, unlike the 2 year age gap between her and Zuko or Jet."
"Aang never supported Katara."
"Aang is sexist or even misogynistic."
"Aang and Katara have sibling/mother-son energy."
"Kataang is one-sided."
"Katara becomes a Trophy Wife"
"Zuko would be a better partner for the emotional support aspect, despite him being canonically depicted as avoidant of his own and his gf Mai's emotions until he does confront his own emotions and is partly dismissive of Mai's."
"Aang didn't unlock free control of the Avatar State because he's obsessed with Katara."
"Some writers and actors shipped Zutara. It's proof."
"Anyone who ships Kataang is [insult] and [insult]."
Honestly, I seen all these and worse things said, I don't even mind Zutara, ship what you want to ship. But these people make it hard to even wanna look at any zutara post
