Crab Children
This is a series of Photos I took while visiting my Aunt at Gumaca, Quezon last 30th of January 2016.
I chanced upon these kids while taking an afternoon walk along the mini coast line of the town. They were not fishing for food. They were fishing small crabs and fishes during the afternoon low tide as part of their play time.
No gadgets, no electronic games, just sweaty palms, muddy feet and ringing laughters.
One of my travel goal is to capture series of photos telling stories of the local and of the place. I’m not the selfie kind of person, I rarely have a picture of myself when I travel. But I have a couple of stories stored during travels.
I like to think that I’m taking stories and telling them as informative and entertaining as possible.
Your Lakbayan grade is C-!
Need to level up!
Anyway as 2016 came I have enough plans and itineraries for the next couple of months.
You want to know your level too?

No Bake Non-Edible Cookie Props
As I have been working as a Assistant Photographer I'm always tasked to do the props. It's one of the perks of my work. I can get crafty whenever I want. And sometimes I get to surprise myself with what props I can do.
For this post I'm going to share how I made the Christmas Cookies we used in our Christmas theme. I needed a cookie props for some pegs that we are using, but buying Christmas cookies in October is almost like impossible.
I thought why not make my own cookies. But how? I went on to search the internet for any NO Bake Craft Cookies and I found some. However the ingredients there are also hard to find here in Manila. so I came up with my own recipe.
The first batch were a bit moist and gooey but still have enough texture to look like cookies. but it would bend down and it’s hard to take photos of it.
The second batch is the best. And the Recipe for my second batch is listed below.
You will NEED:
1 cup of Cornstarch
1 cup of Crushed Grahams1 tablespoon of Corn Syrup
1/4 of Watera
drop of fragrant oil
Rolling Pin
Spatula or other mixing utensil
Bowl
Sieve
Cookie Cutter
1. Sift together cornstarch and crushed grahams in a bowl and mix until well blended.
2. Add the Corn Syrup and mix well. it will start to get gooey and stick.
3. Add the Oil, in this project I used a Vanilla Potpourri oil, since it's the oil available int he studio.
4. Add the water gradually until everything is sticking together.
5. Dust the table with corns starch and knead the mixture until resembles dough like consistency.
6. Used a rolling pin to flatten the dough. You can now cut out the designs you like using a Cookie Cutter.
7. Leave the cookies for at least a day to harden.
There you go, No Bake Cookies!
You can also used them as Christmas tree ornaments as they have fragrance.
WARNING: this cookies are NOT TO BE EATEN!They are for props purposes only.
What I had in mind
So, Amanda Demme...
I was browsing Joe Fenton’s facebook wall because well, his art when I stumble on his Wife’s portraits and he captioned it with the photographer’s name on it. I was curious so I check out Amanda Demme’s website and I was instantly blown away.
Her lighting set up, the background and whole dynamic of the models are really glorious.
Was it like a Rembrandt style of lighting?
The photos are so compelling.
I keep checking out her website and found that she has a photo of her studio, that she rents out to possible clients. Looking through all those photo was looking at a manifestation of what I have in my mind of what I want my studio to look.
Apparently in the field of Art she is one of the successful player there. According to wikipedia (I know it’s not that reliable, but who cares?) “Amanda Scheer Demme is an American photographer and creative director. Previously a music supervisor, label owner, and artist manager, she is best known as a nightlife producer.”
I guess aside from Leibovitz I have another one to look up to.
One Great Adventure
So I watched PAN yesterday. And It was a great choice I did for the last weeks. There were a lot of thoughts that made sense. a lot of things that fired my heart again.
The movie is mainly for the children. The story line is not that deep. The scenes are engaging. It was fun watching it. teleported me back to being 9-years old.
But what struck me was these three quotes:
Home is not where you came from. Home is where you make it. - Tiger Lily to Hook.
~***~
Death is a one great adventure. - Tribal Chief
~***~
Hook: I can’t watch you die!
Tiger Lily: You could have close your eyes.
~***~
I never really thought our home is my home. I always have this feeling that I don’t belong there. That I belong to some place else. That I am more at home in a sailing vessel off to Coron. And I’m more peaceful in a bus bound for somewhere.
I’m more home to the feeling of half frighten and half jumping out of excitement, as I look towards the horizon of never-ending roads and adventure. I’m more relax at the thought of a challenging journey and expectant of what lies ahead of me.
I can feel it, closer than before. I can sooner leave too.
Winner’s Feeling
The photo selection was over (I think) in the recent Annual Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk that I also blogged a few weeks ago.
And out of nowhere, On a rainy, sickly sunday I got a notification on Facebook. I clicked on it and recognized my own shot. I can’t read the captions on it at first, since I’m using my smartphone, so I went to open my laptop and check my was my photo enlarge while the others were not.
When I got to the kelbyone.com I was Blown off!
It said that my photo was chosen as the best photo for this particular location.
I was stunned! And then I saw my name under the title and then my photo right next to it. It was just...WOW!
I know I didn’t won the whole thing. But seeing my photo labeled as BEST PHOTO it warms you up and it urge you to shoot more.
I feel better already (Although I’m still down because of Flu)...
Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk 2015
I haven’t been in photowalks for years, but when I saw Scott Kelby’s post in Facebook about the Annual Worldwide Photowalk, I got interested. What urged me to acually sign up and join was the prizes he would be giving away to the best street photographers out there.
I have 0.0000000% of winning. I’m not expecting or anything given that I’m not a veteran in street photography. What am I saying? I’m not a veteran in Photography in general either.
But the chance to be a part of something global, and the experience of shooting with a bunch of people, has some excitement in it.
I was even an early riser on a Saturday morning because of this, that rarely happens. It was worth it, I got a very nice lanyard as a keepsake anyway.
Two team-leads converged their participants into one, making a whooping large group of people shooting in just one route, Manila City Hall to Binondo. At some point, some shots will eventually look the same. But more often, that wouldn't be the case.
Okay, let’s see what I captured.
Don’t be too harsh in your critics guys, I’m not really good in street scene.
Looking back through some old files from my old photowalks, I think I improved just a tiny bit. Nevertheless I enjoyed October 3rd!
These are streets photographers that I had the pleasure to meet. Awesome people!

The walk that started at 7am, concluded with a full stomach at Estero Foodlane in Binondo.
Taal: A Town Forgotten
***Why was Taal a forgotten Town? Well did you know that there is a small town in Batangas named Taal? I doubt.
According to some little insights from Sir Manny, Taal was a progressive Town before. A lot of illustrados, rich and famous people and prominent families in Batangas came from Taal. But due to Political parties the town was divided and soon, forgotten.
My friend (Manel) and I searched for a quick getaway and foodtrip over the weekend and I found one as I browsed the internet. It was fairly near, about 2-3 hours drive (if you have your own car) from Manila. But the real pull was the food and the Museum of vintage cameras.
We were supposed to paint the town red (as if we know how to -.-) in Subic, but changed plans on the last minute. We ended up on a bus bound for Taal, Batangas, a town we actually never heard of.
I know Taal Lake and the volcano, but I never knew there was a town that was named Taal. The travel time varied last Saturday Morning due to the always present traffic, some accidents on the road and the route that the bus took.
Nevertheless we arrived unscathed and completely hungry at Taal.
Our first stop was a very not good choice, but hey we were hungry to even think about anything. So Fast-food it is, to quench our raging stomachs.
Then off to the Tourism Center of Taal, located near the Taal Basilica. It’s a little lesson I’ve learn from most of my travel. If you’re new in a place or a province ALWAYS DROP AT THE TOURISM OFFICE FIRST!
Because of the last minute changed of plans and my haphazardly itinerary we didn’t know exactly where we are going (we we’re backpackers what do you expect?!). That’s where Tourism Office is best needed.
Tourism Office on every country, city or provinces offers list of local Inns and Hotels and other cheaper accommodations. They have maps of the locality and best recommendations. All information are FREE. Added security is when you register to there guest book. At least they have a record of presence in their place.
Accomodation;
Casa Punzalan was the best choice at that time, considering it’s a stone throw away from the Basilica and it’s very near the Police Station (very safe).
We were the only one who rented that night, and it seems like we rented the whole ancestral house of the Punzalan’s of Taal.
Crazy as we are, we pretended to be the Senyoritas of the cozy ancestral house.
After setting our bags down and settling for a room to stay overnight, we head out to check the small town.
The first stop was the Taal Basilica. According to some locals and the internet apparently, the Basilica or the Basílica Menor de San Martín de Tours is the Biggest Catholic Church in Asia. With the width 48 metres (157 ft) and a length of 88.6 metres (291 ft).
The interior was nicely painted, with a 3D ceiling.
We were told that it is best we set off to check the bell tower before the 5 o’çlock Mass that afternoon, as they closes it up early.
Claustrophobic people are not advised to go up the bell tower as you have to go up in a very cramped passage. But if you can handle your fear and climb up my friend. The scenery is worth it!
Next stop was the main reason why I choose this place, the Galleria Taal. Seeing the photos from the blogs I read about it, is enough for me to take the trip.
Its a 5 minute walk from Taal Baslica and easier to find. You can’t get lost in a small town, but if you find yourself with a busted sense of direction and ask any locals, they will point you to the right path.
I was a lucky girl that afternoon, when one of the staff told us that the owner or the museum is in the house! I took my courage and approached him and asked f all the camera inside his Ancestral-House-turned-museum are working and he told us that they all are!
Much to my luck, the owner/collector/photographer Mr. Manny Inumerable graces us by being the one to give the tour. I thought we’d just spent the tour gasping and being at awed at the collection, never imagined we’d get a special tour. The expected 10 minutes tour stretched up to an hour and It was the most epic worth it P100.00 tour I ever had! Mr. Inumerable even asked to have coffee after the tour! I’m more than lucky, I’m blessed!
It felt like it was a positive sign that I am on the right path. I never asked for a sign, mind you, but it felt that way.
If you are Photographer, Photo enthusiast Galleria Taal is a very recommended place for you to go.
Grumbling stomachs rouse us again to hunt for food, good thing Tampuhan Cafe is a minute away from Galleria Taal.
I recognized Tampuhan Cafe because it’s one of those resto that were highly recommended to check out. And now I get why it was recommended.
Their Chocolate Lave cake was glorious! Bittersweet it always better than too much sweetness in a chocolate cake. Their Rose Ice Tea was relaxing due to its fragrant. The Pasta was as expected, though.
The interior it cozy due to the paintings and quirks that represents Pinoys.
Not sated with the soft of Dinner we had we tracked down the Night Market expecting a busy and lively place only to find a usually, Ihawan near their Public market.
Nothing really special.
At 7:30 we called it a night. Around that time it seems like the whole town is already asleep. It felt like it’s already midnight.
Around 11 in the morning, Sunday, we head out to continue hunting for local foods.
There are many karenderia or “Food Houses”scattered in Taal that offers their famous Gotong Batangas and other local dishes. Since we’re always hungry we settled for the the one nearest Casa Punzalan.
One dish is enough to be shared by two people, But we want to try both so we ordered two different dishes and took turns and tasting.
With full belly we head off to Tagaytay for another food trip. When we say foodtrip we religiously stick to it down tot he last letter of it.
And since Tagaytay is famous for it’s Bulalo, we also hunted it down. And we found one, In one of the over-looking resto that lined the ridges, over-looking the volcano.
By this time we are already too full so we decided to call it a day and head home.
HOW TO GET TO TAAL, BATANGAS:
It’s an easy commute. And most of the landmarks around the town can be reach by walking.
From wherever you’re from, Go to any JAM Liner Bus Ternimal. There’s one in Cubao and one in Pasay. (fare: P189.00) If you’re in Between, there’s a Provincial Bus stop in Ortigas under the fly-overs. It’s a Legit Bus stops, so you’re not committing any traffic laws.
Get off the bus at the crossroad between Taal and Lemery. Ask the conductor to drop you off. You’ll get off at Flying V Gas stations. From there you can take a jeep going into Taal town. Teel the driver to drop you off at The Basilica.
Get Maps and list of accommodations at the TOURIST OFFICE right in front of the Basilica.
Off you go! EXPLORE TAAL!

My Push
you know my one-way ticket dream right?
Well i’m coming up wit a lot of things for me to achieve that and whenever I feel scared and hopeless about my One-Way Ticket dream, the blogs I run back to, to keep me in my chosen path are these:
Two Monkeys
Kach and Jon is truly an inspiration. Especially Kach, dropping everything she knew to have that greatest adventure.
P.S. I’m on my way
Trisha’s adventure in South America really rouse me up whenever I fell unsure of the path I wanted to take. She bravely challenge not just the world but herself and kept on the path that makes her life worthwhile.
Goats on The road
Lakwatsero
Pinay Backpacker
And some other video blogs and clips like the Guy who Quit his Job to High Five the World.
High-End Fashion: Split Toning Effect
There are a couple of blogs and video tutorials that suggested Split Toning effect for High End Fashion Editing. Luckily I had some previous model shoot to use for this practice.
The suggested Highlight-Yellow and Shadow-Blue Split tone was used for the final image. Sure enough that the images drastically changed a lot. As you can see from the original images down to the final, the shot became more engaging to look at.
Of course aside form Split-toning, I twerk some other things in the image like the catch light of the eye. and dodge and burn the shadows, etc.
What do you think about the images.
Tell me! Tell me! I’d love to hear some comments!
RAW vs. JPEG: The simplest way to understand
So a lot of people that are non-consistent photographers are still confused and have no idea the difference of RAW format to JPEG format in photography.
My friends are also asking me the same question, and the only thing that they know about the different is that, RAW format takes a lot of memory compared to the JPEG format.
Let’s use crayons for this analogy, to make it easier to understand.
A RAW format takes ALL the data that the sensor captures. It’s like having a 120 different crayons in one pack.
As for the JPEG format, it compresses the data that the sensor catches, thus saving memory space. Like you only have a 16 crayons in a pack.
See the difference? In the 120 Pack of crayolas you have at least different hues for every primary and secondary colors. On top of that The metadata of the photo is also embedded.
While in the 16-color pack you are only limited to the primary colors and secondary colors. No other choices.
That is why RAW files takes too much space compared to JPEG.
I Shoot People’s Head
I have this personal project of learning how to Photo Edit High Fashion and Portraiture, just that I don’t have headshots to practice on and my friends that I bullied into modelling for me are busy nowadays.
So joining in a Open Shoot last Sunday was my solution. However the group I was supposed to be with seems to have changed their time and plan of the Open Shoot and I was left wandering alone in Ninoy Aquino Wildlife Reserve in Quezon City.
Luckily I stumble upon some photographers, who gladly took me under their wings. I’m glad I stuck around in their group and agreed to be a member too. If I didn’t I wouldn’t have these photos to practiced on.
They were accommodating and funny to be around with.
I guess I’m going to be a Shutter Maniac from now on.
*****
These Personal Projects was pushed by the idea that I got from “Biyaheng Panulat” a creative writing project launch at my alma mater, PUP.
I didn’t had a chance to attend the event, but my friends were there and something they quoted stuck to me. One of the Author’s present said, “At the end of the day, you need to do your own shit.”
Landscape with Edwin Martinez
The basic of landscape photography, although I can't really say that it was the very basic of landscape, however, I got the gist of it.
I never really understand the technicalities of a landscape photographs but I'm always at awe at how magnificent the shots are.
Its like they're magnifying what's already big, and they add more vibrancy and a timelessness in a scene. Although they are just capturing a moment that will never happen again.
From the talk that Sir Edwin Martinez did last Thursday (6th of August), organized by Camerahaus and sponsored by Canon, he laid out some concepts that I have been noticing before, but doesn't have a clue as to what they are called.
The minor tips like how to create the rays or the burst of the sun, the right aperture when shooting landscape, the filters etc., are things that I already knew. I guess its a common knowledge for people who are already shooting for at least 2 years.
But the concept of layering the elements in the scene, the high point and the low angle points, the negative space, using colors -vivid colors-, and realizing that almost all landscape photography is anchored at the universal theme of beauty, are some new stuff for me.
To be able to capture a stunning landscape photo, it needs to encompass the sense of beauty, the sense of simplicity, yet striking that when you see it makes you feel that it is larger than life, and lastly, the viewer shouldn't have to guess where it was taken.
The way i see it, successful landscape photos are those that offers a new look of a common, ordinary place. As much as what a photography now a days. Its a common subject, common scene, but what takes them apart is how they are presented in a new perspective, a new angle, a new scene.
Just like the example used by Sir Edwin, Mayon Volcano's most iconic landscape shot was the one where Cagsawa Bell tower served as the anchor (foreground) of the photo. it has always been shot that way, but in his recent landscape in Bicol (see photo below) he offers a new look of the scenic Mayon.
photo credits from traveltothephilippines.info and Edwin Martinez' 500px account.
The night was very fruitful. I really enjoyed and learned so many things that I want to incorporate with my own shots. Plus, I won. Twice!
A shirt that says "i shot with canon" and a 8gb sd card with wifi. Is there anything cooler than that?
Killing Colors
Street photography is part of the Beginner’s step in taking photography. Not everyone will stick to it but those who did will eventually starts having their names known.
I’ve done numerous photowalk when I was starting out as a hobbyist before. I went out with college friends, friends from Online forums and other people too. That’s why I encourage people who are starting out in photography to do the same.
My brother, the youngest one, is having an interest in photography nowadays. He’s using my old Nikon D3100 and once in a while I’m couching him on some technicalities.
He’s tagging along with a group in our Diocese that does street photography. I was seeing myself in him. From the way he compose and image and the way he chooses the monochrome setting because he was told that black and white is best for street photography. I don’t disagree, but I’m 100% agreeing either.
Since our last conversation, my interest in street photography spike up again so I tried if I improved or at least changed in seeing things and capturing street scenes.
Yesterday, 22nd of July 2015, I was once again on foot for another outdoor shot for my job. And since I was in Intramuros, a place where budding hobbyist in photography starts, I thought why not get some street shots.
I tried to post process these photos and killing the vibrancy of the color so that the contrast and there’s a feel of grunginess.
The point I’m trying to tell my brother about, the photos are not exactly monochromatic, or in gray scale as most street photography are, but desaturating the colors will kinda give the same effect.
For this last shot, I was really glad that I’m using a capable lens. I never had an architectural shot before. I haven’t tried actually. But seeing the last photo makes me want to venture into that niche.
So...Day Two
I started my plan yesterday. And last night I laid out and wrote down some plans and reminders on how to stick with this project.
It goes like the tips and advice that everyone can read from the internet and can be heard from motivational speakers.
JUST KEEP ON GOING. The simplest for is SHOOT, POST, REPEAT.
And early today I checked my fotolia page and the three photos I uploaded yesterday afternoon were approved and now posted.
My photo is looking damn good with my name on the bottom right corner and a copyright sign. A watermark of fotolia in the middle.
I feel legit right now and a pro. hahaha... I’m actually trying to hide my smile of self pride and accomplishment.
I know it is a small thing. But come on! I’m starting to feel I’m doing something perfectly right for my future and my career. Like this is that moment in movies where everything will starts to be better about my life, after all those bad and terrible things that happened.
Yes I’m also a geeky nerd who thinks her life is worth to be put up in hollywood, or a sitcom.
INCOME Challenge
In need of an extra income and a new fuel for my work, I now will start this new challenge.
I just hope I could really stick to it and push myself for this one. I still have a good 5 months to start this.
So generally the plan is to earn $5,000 through my photos. I know I going over board here, but i seriously think I can do it. I just have to strip myself off of my laziness and negativity.
So selling photos through stock photography will urge me to shoot more and learn more while shooting.
I think on this project I will exert more effort than the more being push to me. I’ll still do it but, I don’t feel fuel up with it than with photography.
First up is to create accounts on stock photo websites. That’s the goal for this week and the next week.
