This New Yorker article calls T.S. Eliot’s sex life “a sad and desolate place.” The author declares, “Eliot was…almost certainly a frustrated virgin” when he married his first wife (who he proceeded to sleep a room away from, by the way). The same article explains that Eliot was “in love with” his next partner…and never had sex with her. He was also never sexual with his THIRD partner. The article concludes that T.S. Elliot was SURELY not sex-averse (GOOD HEAVENS NO!) but rather wrote sex as bad because “For Eliot, bad sex was the symptom of a failure of civilization, and it is a fallacy to conclude that, because sex in his poems is disgusting, Eliot was disgusted by sex.”

That’s genuinely how people talk about T.S. Eliot. We all make fun of articles that say things like, “This female author divorced her husband and lived with her CLOSE FEMALE FRIEND for the rest of her life.” But for some reason when I say, “As a sex-repulsed asexual person I relate to a lot of T.S. Eliot’s poetry because so many of his works are caught between an almost hopeless desire for affection and a terrified disgust for sex,“ that’s considered UNINTELLECTUAL. Obviously I’m grossly misinterpreting the TRUE BRILLIANCE of T.S. Eliot’s poetry. When I look up T.S. Eliot’s love life and say, “Maybe T.S. Eliot was like me,” that’s shoved away with “NO! HE COULDN’T POSSIBLY BE LIKE YOU! HE WAS JUST P I C K Y!!!”

Just…would people PLEASE stop rushing to dead people’s “defense” just because I “accused” them of DARING to POSSIBLY be asexual????

Facebook PSA

Hey all, a little Social Media PSA if you have the Facebook App on your phone.

With the last update, Facebook began tracking something called ‘off-Facebook Activity’ which keeps up with all apps and browsing you do off of Facebook and collects that information with the purpose of targeting ads… which means they’re selling it to ad agencies. This includes access to any banking apps on your phone and your spending habits.

Not only is this a major breech of privacy that Facebook didn’t have to tell us about when they updated the app, it’s, of course, automatically turned on.

To turn it off, go into your Facebook app, pull up the menu from the main screen [the button with the three horizontal lines] scroll down to security and privacy, find ‘Off-Facebook Activity’ and hit the button that lets you manage your history to see all the apps it’s been collecting from. From there, you can clear the information it’s already collected, and there will be a button regarding ‘Future activity’ where you can turn the ‘feature’ off, at which point Facebook with give you an ‘ARE YOU SURE YOU DON’T WANT US COLLECTING YOUR INFORMATION TO SELL YOU THINGS???’ screen. Yes, yes you are sure. Because this is disgusting.

Facebook made this super hard to find, so I’ve written up instructions for how I got through it (on my app - I don’t know if there are other versions where it’s different):

From Facebook, go to the Menu by clicking on the three horizontal lines on the top right of the screen.

Scroll down to the bottom and select the Settings & Privacy drop-down menu.

Then select Settings (the first option under the drop-down).

This will take you to a screen showing multiple headers with lists of links under them

Scroll down to Your Facebook Information and select Off-Facebook Activity.

The next page has a short explanation of Off-Facebook Activity. Click Manage Your Off-Facebook Activity after the What You Can Do header.

This will take you to a screen with an option to Clear History (which I recommend). To actually turn off this feature, you will have to click the three dots at the top right of the screen and select the Manage Future Activity option that pops up.

This will take you to a page explaining in more detail what they’re doing. Select the Manage Future Activity at the bottom of the page.

THEN you can finally select the toggle to turn off Future Off-Facebook Activity.

If it’s glowing blue with the circle on the right side, it’s active, and if it’s gray with the circle on the left side, it’s off.

I was always frustrated how my P.E. teachers wanted all of us to go “all-or-none” and basically hurt ourselves without letting us build up from square-one like in the first gif. Then they’d fuckin yell at us for not doing it right >:|

When I got my first personal trainer, she had me doing push ups almost standing upright in the weight lifting bars so that I could do 15 reps and 3 sets of them. It’s more about the technique of the push up, and if you’re pushing too much weight, you can’t exersize the correct muscles within their tolerances. This post is pretty important tto know cause of that.

I was introduced to the knee push-up last year and it was such a fucking game changer. I had NO idea it was possible to work those same muscles just with a slight variation in position.

I wanna just verify that these are excellent for building strength, both as someone who took weights class in high school with a good teacher, and as someone who’s had a lifetime of physical therapy (not for my arms specifically, but I’ve spent a lot of time in sports medicine centers). And again, if the vertical one in the first gif is difficult, you don’t even have to lean into it like that. Start standing, and only lean as much as it takes you to lower towards the wall.

And remember, many exercises can be modified in this way! I did an image search for “modified pull up” and got exactly what I was looking for right away, which is this:

Doing pull ups on a lower bar, or from the straps with handles that gyms sometimes have (called the TRX - they can also be used to support yourself during squats and some balance exercises) is a lot easier than jumping straight into vertical pullups, and lets you build up that muscle with exercises that are still comfortable and safe for you, so you can do more sets of more reps.

As a general rule, always start with lower-strain exercises and practice good form before you work your way up. You don’t want to have to unlearn bad habits that could lead to injury later as the difficulty increases.

Because I have serious issues with core strength and cannot do a sit up or a crunch without using muscles I shouldn’t and hurting myself, I looked up core exercises for beginners (because modified sit ups just have me ways to make it harder), and here’s what I found.

Witch Tip:

Get a copy of the map of your area. Not a country map, a state map, or even a county map. Your area. You can print off a Google map if a commercial version isn't available.

Take the map with you everywhere you go. Make notes on it of things you notice - does one area feel different to you? Does a tree live among many dead ones? Do you see the same cat sitting on the same fence post at the same time every morning? Where do bees live? What crossroads catch your eye? Is there a cemetary?

Once you've filled the map with your observations, keep it in your grimoire for reference.

Having read that tribute to Tom, I guess I know the answer to the question, "Are Tom and Carl a couple?" *g* Having grown up in the 70s, I can understand why the fictional T&C would never twig to that, and why Nita and Kit might never suspect it, at least until they were old enough to get romantic themselves. (But you don't have to answer this publicly, or at all.)

NOW I don’t mind answering it publicly. (Though not without the most intense regret for the reasons why.)

Of course they were together. Of course they were. Tom and Carl were my template for the perfect marriage for many years before they were finally married. (So of all of you who thought that… of course you were right.)

But that was not my story to tell, and I was not at liberty to discuss it while the principals were alive. Both Tom and Carl were professionals, and relatively highly-paid ones, in different fields – fields in which you can never tell who might suddenly take offense at your orientation or life choices and decide to make your life hell. What I knew about their life together was privileged information – quite literally privileged – and I understood the conditions under which I was made privy to it and the possible consequences should I allow myself to be inveigled into breaking confidentiality.

So under no circumstances was I ever going to discuss that while one or both of them was alive, no matter how hard people played the “representation” card on me. This kind of data, for me, comes under the heading of “Whatsoever I hear in my converse with other human beings that rightfully ought not to be noised abroad, that will I keep as secret as if it was something from the holy Mysteries”. My Oath is still in place (though I may no longer be practicing) and its particular requirements, especially as regards a long-established friendship, have remained in force. In this regard, though, I can now smile a little ruefully and let them go. (Because a Pride Parade run by Tom Swale…? – would have been the BEST. PRIDE PARADE. EVAR.) It’s entirely possible, but how that needs to happen requires some consideration.

can you give me some traditional storm raising methods I know beating a rock with a wet rag and invoking the devil raises the wind got any good ones for me also when I do a weather spell do I consider stuff like type of storm/how long it's going to last/over what area do I want it to be?

Some traditional methods to raise storms are:

1) by casting flint stones behind your back towards the west - I’ve never used this method but I have seen others use this method of clicking stones together to bring rain.

2) by flinging a little sand into the air - I’ve actually used this method at one of the local beaches in the area. You can feel the sea breeze pick up the sand and carry it. Then you feel the wind shift and you can smell the briny salt of the ocean as the wind whips up the waves. Dark storm clouds form in the distance and you can watch as it rolls towards shore.

3) by striking a river with a broom - this is meant to send the water from the river into the sky thus bringing rain. Splashing river water works just as well. Swinging a broom in circles above your head in the air is also said to bring great winds and even storms.

4) by stirring water with the finger in a hole in the ground - my family’s method of bringing rain and storms uses an adapted version of this method however we tend to use water in a bowl instead of water in the ground though both methods work.

5) by burning rain bringing incense - My aunt uses this method when Melbourne really needs some rain. She buys an incense called ‘rain drops’ made of herbs known for bringing rain and then burns it while standing out in her yard while looking to the sky. Burning ‘rain bringing’ herbs also works.

6) by dancing, singing and playing musical instruments - while this may not seem very ‘witchy’ this method has been used by multiple cultures around the world to bring rain. Stomping your feet on the ground represents raindrops falling. Singing and the music of instruments represent the wind and the sound of rain.

Draw the sixth pentacle of the Moon in silver ink (pencil is fine) and submerge it in water. As long as it’s underwater it will rain

The famous knotting of the wind spell from Cornwall, where witches “sold the wind” to sailors. I took a piece of hemp rope, tied the first knot focusing on a light breeze. After I tied the knot, I breathed into it, visualising a breeze. The second knot, a gail. The third knot a tempest. The words I used: “Knot number one, a breeze sealed. Knot number two, a gail concealed. Knot number three, a tempest unrevealed. One knot undone will release a breeze. Two knots undone, a gail. Three knots, the tempest untamed.” Make sure to put a charm on one end to know where the first know was done. I worked upwards from the charm. You don’t want to release a tempest by accident. Keep the rope/cord/string in a box, unseen and protected. Leave the cord out when you’ve unknotted it, so the wind can be “free.” Make sure you focus and visualise as you knot the cord. You could even craft it outdoors facing the direction of the wind.

Looking for good podcast recs! I’m on the hunt for good serial stories, preferably finished so I can binge the whole thing. Adventure, horror, post-apocalyptic, and paranormal are the main genres I’m after. And, please, nothing with a “the journalist disappeared and we’re not gonna actually wrap anything up!” ending ala The Black Tapes. I want a real ending, please.

Okay, my suggestions for adventure would be:

The Adventure Zone: An actual play fantasy-ish type podcast that has adventure and humor; the first arc, Balance, has an ending, though they sometimes do one-shots at live shows. They’ve done another arc, that I ended up not liking so much. Their current arc, Amnesty, is also going to be finishing soon.

Arcs: Another actual play fantasy podcast that seems to be quite fun.

Brute Force: Another actual play podcast.

Dark Ages: This is like… an office comedy mixed with fantasy.

EOS10: Sci-fi comedy podcast… Kind of like Scrubs in space, but a little more chaotic. One of my favorites.

Girl in Space: The title says most of it, actually. A girl in a spaceship; the only movie she has is Jurassic Park. Then, one day, she sees something coming toward her in space.

The Hyacinth Disaster: A mission to help another spaceship goes poorly (has an actual ending)

Liberty podcast: This one kind of spans a lot of genres, so I guess adventure is the best category?

The Monster Hunters: A comedy adventure podcast featuring Roy Steel, ex-big game hunter, and Larrimer Chesterfield, a brain in the shape of a man. It has a very ‘60s/’70s feel to it. The guy who voices Roy Steel sounds like the guy who plays Douglas Reynholm from The IT Crowd, which amuses me to no end.

Moonbase Theta, Out: Check-in logs from a member of a moonbase colony.

The Penumbra Podcast: There’s a few different arcs to this podcast. I remember one is about knights and one is about a private eye on Mars.

The Strange Case of Starship Iris: a sci-fi mystery/comedy!

Tides: A scientist researches a new planet, sci-fi/audio drama.

Time Bombs: a short audio drama that was completed in the span of a week, by the people who created Wolf 359. Has an ending. Is about people who defuse bombs!

Victoriocity: a Victorian mystery/comedy

Wolf 359: Another one of my absolute favorites! Three people on a space station orbit a star named Wolf 359. Lots of comedy, but definitely a fair amount of drama and mystery.

Suggestions for horror:

The Blood Crow Stories: This I think is on its third arc, and each one is a different story.

The Infinite Bad: Another actual play podcast that has an actual ending.

The Insomnia Project: a horror/comedy podcast about people doing research into a medication that eliminates the need for sleep.

The Lost Cat Podcast: Not horror-horror, more spooky-horror. A man searches for his lost cat in various circumstances.

The Magnus Archives: This started off as kind of spooky/scary story per episode, but built into a whole storyline of a larger horror mystery. It’s fantastic.

Post-Apocalyptic:

The After Disaster Broadcast: A group of women working to survive following an apocalyptic volcanic eruption.

Blackout: What happens to a small town when the power goes out and communication with other places is cut off. Just finished season one.

The Bunker: A weird post-apocalyptic podcast; it advertises as a breakfast radio show for the post-apocalyptic generation. This one is a finished podcast.

Directive: A man is charged with taking care of passengers sleeping on a trip in space for 20 years. This one has an ending.

Earth Break: Aliens take over the earth and one woman fights to survive, which is made more complicated by… additional circumstances. Has an ending.

Liminal Apocalypse: Five people go to a shelter, following warnings of a possible apocalyptic attack. I’ve just started this one.

Still Lives: A small group of people working together to survive following an apocalypse that killed all other people on earth hear a knock at the door. Has an ending.

SAYER: A super-advanced, self-aware AI communicates with new residents of Earth’s second moon, Typhon, to help them acclimate to their new environment.

Scenic Byways: I’m not totally sure this is apocalyptic, but it gave me those vibes. A trucker records his travels as he goes through a strange, almost mythical country. Has an ending.

We’re Alive: This is a HUGE podcast. It’s been going for a while. There’s several arcs of it, and they’ve just started a new one. It’s about surviving the zombie apocalypse.

Windfall: A sci-fi podcast about a world that’s been taken over by an alien queen, where people are split between those who live high enough to see the sky, and those below.

Paranormal podcast recommendations:

The Box: A girl working at a bookstore finds a box with all kinds of weird, fantastical and sometimes horrifying stories. As she researches them to see if they’re real or fictional, weird things begin happening to her, too.

The Bright Sessions: People with powers (time travel, mind reading, teleportation, etc.) have a lot to deal with… let’s listen in on their therapy sessions! This one has a first “arc” that’s ended, but they sometimes release new things.

Carrier: A semi-truck driver picks up a loaded trailer that comes with very specific instructions, but no idea what’s inside. This one just finished.

King Falls AM: Another favorite of mine! An AM radio duo talk to the good people of King Falls as all sorts of interesting, paranormal things happen around (and eventually to) them. Drama and comedy!

Unwell, A Midwestern Gothic Mystery: A daughter moves home to take care of her mother, following an accident. Her mother runs the town’s boarding house, and all manner of interesting weirdness occurs there.
