Harper: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DARREN!!! all the love, hugs, kisses - and yes, cake! - from myself and ethan! xxx
Unless she had been worn down by the wide and unblinking puppy dog eyes of her friends, Harper didnât do clubs. Clubs didnât sell hot chocolates or M&M cookies, nor did they show screenings of her favourite Disney movies. She also knew that club-goers would look down on someone who would rather spend their Saturdays nights dressed in a matching Tinkerbell pyjama set and fluffy socks. That attire didnât fit in with the skimpy outfits and loud music found in a New York nightclub, which is why Harper tended to steer clear of them.
However, she also chose not to wander into opium dens, dark caves, minefields, nuclear weapon testing sites or any area that had a sign clearly marked âkeep outâ with a skull and crossbones attached to it. But if Peter Rhodes told her to go to any of the aforementioned locations, Harper would be whizzing by that precautionary sign before he finished his sentence. So really, going to a nightclub for the sake of Rhodes wasnât an overly strenuous task for Harper, not if it would help her best friend like Elliot claimed it would.
âPut it this way, Harps!â Elliot had persuaded her. âNo one is going to be straight so thereâll be no lads trying to grope your arse.â
After processing this, Harper had decided that Elliot did have a sound point. Plus, Rhodes needed cheering up after his break-up with Greyson and while Harper doubted that a room full of sweaty, if admittedly good-looking, guys would fix it, she wouldnât write it off entirely either.
When Ethan, Autumn, Faith and, of course, Ferris Bueller, were left in the care of Rosy and Scotty, she had allowed Elliot to scrutinise her outfit before deeming her acceptable. If the club they were going to was full of gay men then she doubted anyone would be looking at her, so she knew that mom jeans and a cardigan would do.
As it happened, people had been looking at her and it wasnât just gay men in the club that was now reverberating with the sound of a loud and remixed version of âYou Canât Stop the Beatâ from Hairspray. Harped loved it.
âA girl gave me her number! That was nice of her!â Harper excitedly told Rhodes, pleased as punch as she showed him the scrap piece of paper that she wouldnât use for its intended purpose, but it never hurt for her to have more friends. She felt a little giddy and buzzed, and didnât know whether to attribute that to the unexpected attention or the shots that Elliot had pressed into her hand and instructed her to knock back.
âI like this place!â she declared, sidling up to Rhodes and wrapping her arms around his neck.
âAre you okay, Rhoderunner?â she asked, peering up at her best friend.
Iâm in total friendlove with whoever sent this. You can have all the cakes, nonny!
I promise to give him lots.

Rhodes: She can have one. Tha' can be her punishment. Just th'one cake.
Harper: Grounding her would be less severe.

Rhodes: I thought Thursday was red velvet cake day?
Harper: hence the red velvet cupcakes we can't deprive Autumn of.

Harper: But it's Thursday! It's known as good cop, bad cop day!

Rhodes: Y'know she's in trouble, Princess.
Harper: But she's only in trouble in /your/ apartment, not /mine/!
TEXT: RHODES
Rhodes: Yeah. Figures.
Rhodes: Sorry for th'disruption, princess. Hope I didn't tear y'away from little Loanie for too long x
Harper: You didn't at all!!

Harper: He'll understand if you're looking for Autumn.
TEXT: RHODES
Rhodes: I dunno. That'd be childish, righ'?
Rhodes: I hate this. She's probably with him. Or on her way t'him at least.
Harper: You're nervous, not childish!!
Harper: The only way to find out is to check in.
TEXT: RHODES
Rhodes: Not on his birthday, Harper.
Harper: You need to find Autumn, Rhoderunner.
Harper: Do you want me to call and ask?? Or get Toby to??
TEXT: RHODES
Rhodes: He didn't exactly make it sound like he wanted much t'do with her once he split, you know?
Rhodes: Thanks, Harper. M'sorry about all this.
Harper: What about the first time you broke up?? Autumn ended up at a bus station waiting for him. I'd check in just in case.

Rhodes: She knows not t'go t'Grey anymore.
Rhodes: Maybe Lizzie has her.
Harper: You told her not to go see him??
Harper: I'll ask Ethan if he knows x
