Yasmin - Unit 2 part E
What worked really well? I think the whole project at hand, work well as the collaboration between us photographers receiving comments on my content, whilst communicating and exchanging ideas with and the head of productions. We were able to plan out a plan for the display for the photos and create several scripts for the rest of the crew, whilst they were away.
What didn’t go so well? There wasn’t an issue that couldn’t be solved if anything the printer was just an annoyance as the ink unexpectedly ran out and we had to stop printing.
Did you stick to the project plan? Yes, I stuck to the plan Miriam and myself devised with the helping assistance of the heads production, telling us to change only a few minor things or to add quotes on the display or to consider the shape of the quotations and what type of font to use.
If you had to write the project plan again what would you change and why? The improvements that I would have made, would be to complete reviews on the days we did them, instead of waiting till edit week to finish off each section of our arts award, as this would have created a more accurate response and not so rushed.
What did other people think? The crew gave back good feedback about what photos they liked for the final selection and told me to lighten naturally dark photos on photoshop as it would look nicer.
What have you learnt from this feedback? I have learnt to choose from a range of photos, and to consider adding small touches to the photos, to enhance the photo’s quality, such as rising the vibrancy levels or taking away the saturation. All the feedback I have received is needed to improve the exhibition.
REVIEWING ROLE IN THE PROJECT: What leadership skills did you develop? The leadership skills I developed were, my communication and planning skills due to me starting the project I lacked in those areas and knew that these skills, in particular, were essential for a leader role. I have learnt that being a leader, you learn to compromise and accept that not everyone may like or envision the same idea as you, that you collectively work together to brainstorms ideas that everyone has a say in.
What was the best thing about working with others on the project? Working with a wide age range of people, is great because I wouldn’t normally converse with people who are three or two years younger than me because I am sixth form student and I am constantly surrounded by people my age or older. This has allowed to me to see from a younger person’s perspective and know that I share similarities with people much younger than myself. I have also learnt new skills from working with the crew, and I have given out my advice as well.
What was difficult about working with others? The only difficulty I faced was incorporating everyone’s ideas after brainstorming, as many of the members were very adamant on keeping some aspects from lessons we were taught on saturdays and not everyone agreed, so I had to find a middle ground in which I incorporate some of the improv sketches we created on the saturday but added new elements into it.
How would approach working with others on a similar project in the future? I would approach projects like this with a positive attitude and the skills I learnt from this project.
What do you know now about being a leader that you didn’t know before? I know that being a leader isn’t easy, as you must be organised and make sure that everyone has a role within each group task or project. You also have to plan ahead and make sure we have all the resources we need to complete the task.
Are there any tips you would give to someone else who may like to run a similar project? I would advice people to constantly communicate with all the crew members and ask for their feedback, on they think did work and didn’t work, to ensure a good work environment.
(Jay) UNIT 1 PART D: Arts Research
WHICH ARTIST ARE YOU FINDING OUT ABOUT?:
Steven Moffat, current Doctor Who show-runner, writer and producer.
HOW DID YOU FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THEIR WORK?:
I’m quite into scriptwriting and I’ve been a fan of Doctor Who since I was young, so it felt natural for me to combine the two and find out a bit more about his work and what he does exactly.
WHAT SORT OF WORK DO THEY DO?:
Steven Moffat is a screenwriter, so the majority of his work is based around writing scripts for television. Since 2010 he’s also been a showrunner on Doctor Who, a job which involves planning the creative direction for said TV show.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT THEIR CAREER AND THEIR WORK?:
Before my research I only knew him for his work on Doctor Who and Sherlock, so for me it was quite a surprise for me to find out that he’d done quite a bit of other writing for various other forms of media and feature films.
RECORD EVIDENCE OF YOU FINDING OUT ABOUT MORE ABOUT THEM AND THEIR WORK HERE:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0595590/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Moffat
HAVE YOU FOUND OUT ABOUT ANY OTHER ARTISTS? USE THIS SPACE TO RECORD ANY OTHER EXPERIENCES AND RESEARCH YOU HAVE DONE:
Most of my research has been directed towards Moffat himself, but here are a couple of other artists I’ve looked into recently:
NEIL GAIMAN: Famous author and screenwriter whose work I really like. He’s written novels, screenplays, and even scriptss for graphic novels. Neil’s done one or two episodes for Doctor Who too, which I quite liked.
RUSSELL T DAVIES: Mainly known for being the showrunner for Doctor Who from 2005 through to 2009, but he’s also done a ton of other writing for television and stage plays.
WHAT ART ACTIVITIES CAN YOU GET INVOLVED WITH IN YOUR AREA? FIND OUT WHAT’S AVAILABLE, WHEN AND WHERE:
1A Arts themselves run various other arts courses throughout the year, including a weekly Media Arts Club focusing on film and photography and even a pottery club (not something I’m super-into, but it’s there if I feel like branching out a bit into other art forms). Meanwhile, Islington has an even wider range of arts activities available, including a digital photography course at Barnsbury Estate community centre.
HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THESE ACTIVITIES?:
The 1A Arts courses were found on the Holborn Community website, and the Islington art activities from their website.
MAKE A SHORT LIST OF JOBS IN THE ARTS YOU THINK YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN HERE:
Screenwriter
Filmmaker
Director
Professional photographer
CHOOSE ONE OF THESE JOBS AND DO SOME RESEARCH TO FIND OUT. WHICH JOB DID YOU CHOOSE?:
Screenwriting.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS OR TRAINING WOULD YOU NEED?:
I’d mainly need samples of my previous scripts and work to give clients an idea of what my work is like.
WHAT EXPERIENCE WOULD YOU NEED?:
Although I’ve done scriptwriting work in the past, I personally think that it’d be a good idea for me to find a course or youth project focusing on screenwriting so that I can develop my writing skills further.
WHAT SKILLS DO YOU THINK YOU ALREADY HAVE THAT WOULD HELP YOU GET A JOB LIKE THIS?:
I’ve done various bits and pieces of screenwriting/scriptwriting over the past couple of years, so the past experience would definitely be an advantage.
WHAT SKILLS WOULD YOU NEED TO DEVELOP TO GET A JOB LIKE THIS?:
I’d definitely need a CV consisting of my past work and achievements, plus a couple of sample scripts to provide potential employers an idea of what my writing is like.
HOW DO YOU THINK ABOUT HOW YOU COULD STAY INVOLVED IN THE ARTS IN THE FUTURE?:
Practicing the skills I’ve learnt and developed over the course of this project is generally the best way for me to personally stay involved in the arts.
Yasmin - Silver Arts Award: Unit 2 - Part C Review 2
How is your project going?
The project is almost under wraps.
What is going well?
The display of photos, as my partner and I have been able to work out, how many photos are needed for each side of the board, as the display is double sided.
What have you had to change and why since your last report?
The selection of photos and the presentation of quotes as we decided we wanted two particular shapes.
Has this had any impact on your own role and what you were planning to do?
We have good variety of photos, which means that our content is well balanced and that there are no duplicates.
What ideas have you shared with the team?
I shared different photo options with the group, so they could help me select the final photos for the project.
How have you helped others?
I’ve have helped my partner when she needed help editing photos and trying to recover several over exposed photos.
I have also helped the bronze awards crew with their feed back and their artist research.
What decisions have you had to take to make sure the project is a success?
selection of photos
colour correction
choice of font
layout and design
What have you not been able to do within your role that you think would have made things better?
I could have created my own invite, know knowing that there was option to create one.
What were the leadership skills you chose to focus on?
Taking feedback from others
Communicating with the crew
Drafting and Planning ideas for our project
What have you done during the project to help you improve in these areas?
Look at different ways how to collect feedback from my peers, some through verbal communication and others visually.
Miriam- Silver arts award: Unit 2 Part E
What worked really well?
I was able to communicate with my group leaders, the cannibal goldfish member, in particular Yasmin, and collectively brainstorm ideas , plan and carry out a project.
What didn't go so well?
Everything i intended to carry out went to plan although i did have some trouble printing my images due to the ink running out.
Did you stick to the project plan?
Yes, as i carried out all of my action plan, frequently regrouping with Yasmin and the group leaders to see what is done and what needs to be done.
If you had to write the project plan again what would you change and why?
If i had to change the project plan i would change the board display and probably use a bigger board as it was hard to narrow down the photos to just 21.
What did other people think?
The group members and leaders were happy with our final selection and display images as we reflected the whole summer project in the exhibition.
What have you learnt from this feedback?
I have learnt that it good to chose a variety of photos not just images form one particular day. Also, that feedback is necessary in helping improve the project.
Reviewing role in the project:
What leadership skills did you develop?
I aimed to develop my planning, managing and communication skills as i know that they are key skills required for being a leader. I have learnt that being a leader is not just about being persistent on just your ideas but collectively incorporating everyones ideas and allowing everyone to work as a team.
What was the best thing about working with others on the project?
The best thing about working with others is that you get to meet new people who have ideas and views that may be similar or different to your own which allows you to see things from a different perspective. I addition you get to learn new skills from others and also i teach others something they may not have known or want to improve on.
What was difficult about working with others?
The difficult thing was that some people were very persistent about their ideas being used which made it harder to incorporate everyones ideas.
How would approach working with others on a similar project in the future?
i would approach a project in the future using the knowledge and skills that i have acquired during this project.
What do you know now about being a leader that you didn't know before?
I know now that being a leader is hard as you have to incorporate everyones ideas and make everyone feel as if they are involved. As well as that you have to plan ahead and you can't improvise a task.
Are there any tips you would give to someone else who may like to run a similar project?
i would tell them to frequently ask for feedback during their project and always communicate and regroup with the rest of group in order to make sure that their project is a success.
Yasmin - Silver Arts Award: Unit 2 - Part C Responsibility
How is your project going?
Good.
What is going well?
Communication between the my partner and myself and making sure that we have all the equipment we need for our exhibition, such as our own personal portfolios, along with arranging what size of paper we will be using.
What have you had to change and why?
I’ve had to take more pictures for certain days, because for some shoots, I didn’t take a variation of photos.
What ideas have you shared with the team?
Sharing the same idea of making sure that we did not have the same photos on our display, as we each to display photos taken by ourselves
How have you helped others?
When there has been trouble with lighting, I have helped Miriam with the settings in the camera and making sure that the aperture and iso are apporiate for the shoot.
What decisions have you had to take to make sure the project was a success?
Take in consideration the space of the board and how much many photos will be displayed, along with showing everyone of the art awards crew within the photos.
Are there any other things you have had to think about to make sure everyone was kept safe?
No
Miriam- Silver arts award: Unit 2 Part C Final Review
Project Review 2: Date: 5/8/16
How is your project going?
My project is going as planned as i have completed most of my actions
What is going well?
I have printed my final selection of photos for the exhibition as well as beginning to print out the photos for my portfolio and the quotes and logos that will be on the display board.
What have you had to change and why since your last report?
In regards to my photos i haven't changed anything although, with the quotes Yasmin and i have decided to put them in two specific shapes rather than just a rectangle.
Has this had any impact on your own role and what you were planning to do?
It didn't have a large impact however i just had to make sure that we used a equal amount of the shapes and that the quotes fit inside.
What ideas have you shared with the team?
I have shared my final selection of photos for the exhibition and some of the photos that i will use in my book.
How have you helped others?
I have helped my fellow cannibal goldfish member by giving them feedback as well as helping Yasmin select her photos.
What decisions have you had to take to make sure the project is a success?
I have had to change some of the photos that i intended to print out for the display and book. I have also edited a couple of the photos so that they are good quality. Yasmin and i have also had to make the decision on how we wanted to present our prints as we initially wanted to hange them from the museum ceiling but we realised that it wouldn't be successful as the room is quite small and is already filled up with work and pieces on the wall.
What have you not been able to do within your role that you think would have made things better?
During the filming week i was not able to take photos during the actual take which was shame as it would've allowed me to capture stunning photos of the action taking place.
Were there any other things you had to think about to make sure everyone was kept safe?
The only thing that we had to think about was where we were going to place the board as it could be easily knocked over and someone could've also been injured.
What were the leadership skills you chose to focus on?
The leadership skills i chose to focus on was my planning, managing and communication skills
What have you done during the project to help you improve in these areas?
During this project i have been more vocal about my ideas as well as giving feedback which has helped me improve my communication skills. I have also carried out a planning process before taking pictures and printing which has improved my managing and planning skills.
(Jay) UNIT 2 PART E: The Grand Finale.
WHAT WORKED REALLY WELL?:
Well, actually quite a lot of it went really, really well to be honest. The initial design process was a great way for me to get creative with logo concepts (t’was also an interesting insight into how pitching ideas works), and finalizing the design in Photoshop was a blast. So yeah, overall the project was great!
WHAT DIDN’T GO WELL?:
Eh, I don’t think anything really went badly during this project honestly. Everything sorta just went according to plan, especially since all it really involved was me working a ton on logos. All in all, nothing went wrong because there wasn’t really much to go wrong in the first place.
DID YOU STICK TO THE PROJECT PLAN?:
To the letter. The plan itself was pretty simple anyways (come up with designs to present, feedback, develop idea, feedback, final touches, final feedback), so it wasn’t that hard to keep to overall.
IF YOU HAD TO WRITE THE PROJECT PLAN AGAIN WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE AND WHY?:
...I wouldn’t change a thing. The original plan was simple and got straight to the point, so changing it would’ve just made it too overly complex. Sometimes it’s best to leave things as they are.
WHAT DID OTHER PEOPLE THINK?:
From what I’ve heard, they’re really super-proud of the logo and some people have even said it “looks really professional”, which is quite nice since I try to put as much effort into my work as possible.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM THIS FEEDBACK?:
I’ve learnt from this that involving the rest of the team in many of the key decisions does help them feel that it’s more of a group project than if, say, I sat in a corner and straight-up designed a logo from scratch on my own. I also learnt that the more work you put into something the more you’ll get out of it, which is something I’ve experienced directly from spending a ton of time trying to get this logo completely perfect.
WHAT LEADERSHIP SKILLS DID YOU AIM TO DEVELOP?:
The skills I tried to work on for this project were to take on feedback from the rest of the team and to always present multiple options when presenting ideas to the group.
WHAT WAS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING WITH OTHERS ON THE PROJECT?:
Overall the best thing was receiving feedback from the rest of the team, since their suggestions were what made the project a “group project” instead of just “Jay’s solo logo project that he did on his own”. They shaped the direction of the project and made it what it is now.
WHAT WAS DIFFICULT ABOUT WORKING WITH OTHERS?:
I suppose at first the sheer amount of suggestions and such was a bit overwhelming, but once I started going through everything at an orderly pace I just got a bit more used to it really.
HOW WOULD YOU APPROACH WORKING WITH OTHERS ON A SIMILAR PROJECT IN THE FUTURE?:
In exactly the same way really: by conferring with the rest of the group at multiple intervals to make sure that the project is going in the direction they want it to.
WHAT DID YOU KNOW NOW ABOUT BEING A LEADER THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW BEFORE?:
I didn’t realize that you had to get feedback at so many points in the project, but everything else I sorta assumed from past experience really.
ARE THERE ANY TIPS YOU WOULD GIVE TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO MAY LIKE TO RUN A SIMILAR PROJECT?:
A couple, yes: always plan multiple proposals when presenting ideas to others, put as much effort into your work as possible and just enjoy it honestly.
DUANE - SILVER ARTS AWARD - UNIT 2 PART E
What worked well?
I feel that the Internship as a whole went well. Once I stepped up and started performing better, I feel that the experience became a lot more enjoyable too. I think that i’ve developed on most of the things that I personally wanted to develop on so I’m very satisfied.
What didn’t go so well?
Probably the first few weeks as I’ve mentioned before. I also think I could have worked on my communication skills even more throughout the project, despite that being a difficult one to me. But if I ticked those boxes from the start, I feel that the internship could have gone even better.
Did you stick to the project plan?
Pretty much. My tasks are pretty similar on a day to day basis. Of course, I had to change how I performed personally, but I didn’t change the project plan. That was pretty much set for the whole project.
If you had to write the project plan again what would you change and why?
As I’ve mentioned before, I’d try to have performed better right from the start. This would have been better for everyone. I probably would have tried to get a grip on where things were a bit quicker, so I could be packing up and packing down without any issues.
What did other people think? Put some examples of the feedback you got here.
What have you learnt from this feedback?
I’ve learnt that I must be doing at least something right if Lesley is looking forward to continuing work with me!
What leadership skills did you aim to develop?
I chose to develop my Confidence, Communication and Initiative Skills. They’re getting better, and I’ve gained various other skills. However, I feel that my Initiative skills have Improved the most. I worked very hard on that, and Linda and Lesley have told me that they’ve noticed the improvement.
What was the best thing about working with others on the project?
The best thing about working with others on the project has been working with people who share your interests. My work colleagues and the young people. We all have a passion for the media industry and it’s not everyday you meet people with the same interests as you.
What was difficult about working with others?
As mentioned before, I found it difficult to interact with people throughout the project as this is something I’ve always struggled with. I’ve improved with this, but It is certainly a struggle for me. This Internship took me out of my comfort zone many times which helped me a ton. I work best out of my comfort zone.
How would you approach working with others on a similar project in the future?
I would keep in mind what Lesley and Linda told me. I think I’ll remember what was said for a long time, and I can take that with me in many walks of life. I will also work on my communication skills for any future projects.
What do you now know about being a leader that you didn’t know before?
I learnt that being a leader requires a ton of Initiative! It requires you to step out of your comfort zone, which will be even more uncomfortable if you lack in confidence. However, you shouldn’t rule out being a leader just because you aren’t the most outgoing person in the world. The experience will really push you and help you to develop crucial life skills.
Are there any tips you would give to someone else you may like to run a similar project?
I would tell them to give it their all and make each decision carefully. I would also tell them to ask for feedback, and if that feedback isn’t exactly positive, don’t be offended. Take it as motivation to improve, and better yourself as a person!
Yasmin: Unit 2 - Part D
How have you communicated with others? Think of a few different examples with different people.
Asking around for feedback on my performance as a leader and wanting to know what I could improve on.
Introducing myself at the start of the project and sharing my interests within this project
Talking to the heads of production about the exhibition on where it will take place and on what day.
What problems have you come across during the project?
The printer stopped working severals times and needed a reboot because it was constantly flashing.
Say how you have worked with others to solve the problems?
I worked with the heads of production and asked them to possibly look at the ink cartridge and to check that all the ink levels were okay.
Record the times when you have asked for help?
When the printer’s ink stopped working and I didn’t know how to change it.
Needed assistance on making sure that I had completed the sections for silver arts award and knowing what I needed to work on.
How to use Indesign adobe CS3.
Record here what people have said and how well you worked with other people.
Raza - Part A: Camera Operating
I operated the camera in the car part of the Piracy Sketch and in some of the Vox Pops and in Olga’s dancing on stage. I enjoyed using a professional level camera as this was my first experience using one to film a real scene. I learnt how close fast shots can deceive an audience into thinking something is one thing when it is really another. My skills improved as I learnt to use a professional camera specifically I learnt how to use the ND filter feature and also I adapted my skills from DSLR filmmaking to this piece of equipment.
DUANE - SILVER ARTS AWARD - UNIT 2 PART D
How have you communicated with others? Think of a few different examples with different people.
i have communicated with others via casual conversation, or if Lesley and Linda have asked me to talk to the young people about something specific. Here are a few examples:
Introducing myself at the beginning of the project, telling them my background and what I do.
Talking to young people individually about their invitations to the screening and how many people they’d like to invite.
I have also communicated with Lesley and Linda multiple times, to arrange shifts and various other tasks I have on the project.
What problems have you come across during the project?
A part from me taking a while to get to grips with things, there haven’t been many issues. The pre production, shoot and edit week all ran very smoothly.
Say how you have worked with others to solve the problems:
Firstly - Me, Lesley and Linda sat down and discussed what needed to be fixed. This gave me a clear idea of what I needed to do, and straight after the meeting, I was planning in my head how I can work on those things. I think that this conversation basically did solve the problem, because I simply needed to hear the honesty which led to me taking the appropriate action.
Record the times when you have asked for help?
I asked for help on opening and closing the safe.
i asked for directions to the Bedford House centre, where I was sent to regularly.
I needed help with my timesheet, and got instructions on how to construct it.
Record here what people have said about your leadership skills and how well you work with other people?
Tsing: Making the invites
This morning I started off designing the fish for the invite. I first used photoshop to edit the eyes and the lips. Then moved onto In Design and added text and the logos. Rachel helped, then took over, and added the other text. I learnt how to briefly use In Design, and this activity has improved my photoshop skills.
(Jay) UNIT 2 PART D: Communication error
HOW HAVE YOU COMMUNICATED WITH OTHERS? THINK OF A FEW DIFFERENT EXAMPLES WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE:
I know I’ve probably said this already, but the main example of me communicating with the rest of the group is when I’ve presented my proposals for potential logo ideas to the rest of the team for evaluation. I did this two to three times at different points in the design process to make sure that everyone had an opportunity to provide input that helped shape the final logo.
WHAT PROBLEMS HAVE YOU COME ACROSS DURING THE PROJECT?:
To be perfectly honest I haven’t really had many straight-up problems, but at points I’ve been unable to decide by myself what would work best for the final logo.
SAY HOW YOU WORKED WITH OTHERS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS?:
To solve these dilemmas I ended up asking the rest of the team for their input by proposing several options to them and asking them to vote on their overall favorite. I mainly did this because it sorta felt unfair for me to decide something for the rest of the group in case they felt their opinions were being completely ignored.
RECORD THE TIMES WHEN YOU’VE ASKED FOR HELP?:
I asked everyone from the group for their input at least three times during the design process: the first time was when I presented the first three initial sketches, the second time was for when I’d just finished making the rough logo in Photoshop and asked for further suggestions (this was where the black outline originated), and the third time was at the very end when I asked for any further suggestions (all the feedback at this point though was mainly to keep it the same, so I did). These feedback sessions were a great opportunity for me to get feedback about my progress from the rest of the team, and they really helped shape the outcome of this project.
RECORD HERE WHAT PEOPLE HAVE SAID ABOUT YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND HOW YOU WORKED WELL WITH OTHER PEOPLE?:
”Jay did really well considering that he did most, if not all of the work himself for the logo. The independence was a sign of a true leader.” - Duane
“I really like the logo it looks really professional.” - Raza
“You involved us in your final selection for your logo and asked us for your feedback.” - Miriam
