hollanov au where they’re roommates at a catholic boarding school and secretly hooking up with each other but there’s tension because ilya is tired of being closeted and wants to come out but shane panics and breaks up with him and then sleeps with rose who is starring opposite him in the school’s musical production of romeo and juliet. and then rose ends up getting pregnant and is distraught because her “boyfriend” doesn’t seem to like her all that much and someone found out about shane and ilya and is threatening to tell. and shane goes to confession distraught over being gay but the priest tells him he must deny his feelings and then at the end of his rope shane asks ilya to run away with him but ilya refuses because he doesn’t want to spend the rest of his life hiding. and then in a final act of misery shane takes too much of scott hunter’s drugs right before he goes on stage for the romeo and juliet musical performance and becomes increasingly disoriented as the play goes on and then he dies in ilya’s arms

peter having a nightmare in the form of a seven-minute stylized musical number is quite possibly the gayest thing he could have done and i absolutely adore him for that

Debating the healthiness of Peter and Jason’s relationship is missing the point. No, it wasn’t as healthy as it could’ve been, and that’s part of the tragedy. They should have been able to have a relationship that didn’t get worn down by the secrets and the guilt. They should have been able to have a regular, unremarkable high school romance, and it should’ve been able to end without causing more than a few hurt feelings.

But because of the culture they were surrounded by, they couldn’t do that. Jason was a bad boyfriend because of the self-hatred the church instilled in him. The point is that they were both flawed teenagers and they should’ve been able to make mistakes without it being deadly.

The thing with Bare is that when you relisten, even You and I, which is arguably one of the lightest songs, feels like a fucking gut punch
