Theodore had to nod in concession to that. “Thanks,” he answered. “It was certainly something I didn’t expect to find interesting, especially since some of his research sounded dubious at best, but in the end, there is a lot most people don’t know about pole. Or silks, trapeze–any of them, really.”

“You’re welcome.” Marissa replied before nodding as the man spoke. “I’ve never done the trapeze, but I have enjoyed pole dancing and aerial silks. They can be rather beautiful and fun. I think there are a lot of misconceptions about pole dancing as well.”

Lucie nodded. She understood missing her family, sure, she missed her mom. But, there was so much potential here. Lucie was finally free to be herself and not try to hide parts of herself. “Mari, that’s a nice nickname.” Lucie replied with a small smile. She stood awkwardly until the girl started leading the way. 

“Thank you,” Marissa replied as she began to lead the way. “So what are you interested in? Maybe we could find something relating to that first.”

“you do realise i’m not stupid and i do understand how pole dancing works?” charlie chortled, shaking their head at the other. “i was more astounded at your upper body strength, if anything. i know how hard it is to hold yourself up on one of those things. definitely more muscle than it looks like you’ve got - unless, your power helps in that department?” charlie’s helped sometimes, say if they suddenly decided to be a contortionist. but really, when it came to dance, it wasn’t overly useful.

Marissa got slightly offended about him implying that she would use her power to affect her dancing. “The only thing I can strengthen with my power is hearts. So no, it was all me.” She replied. “Do you really think I would beef myself up when I thought I was practicing alone at first?”

“I have not, no.” Liam shook his head slightly. “At least, not yet or not today.” He chuckled. “Though I do room with someone that resembles that criteria pretty closely.” He smirked as he glanced towards the girl. “I’m guessing you’re not here for personal training then?”

Marissa narrowed her eyes a little at the man. “Oh! You do look familiar now that you mention it. You must be one of Ivan’s roommates. I know we’ve talked before, but I never put it fully together.” She smiled at the man. “No, I do most of my own exercise through my dancing and leading dance classes. It’s probably why you might see lights on in the dance studio later in the evenings.”

Flynn furrowed his eyebrows and scratched at the top of his head. Whatever he had watched had confused the hell out of him. “Well no, I didn’t but–” Flynn shook his head slightly. “I mean it makes sense.” He muttered to himself. “But what is the purpose of this?” 

Marissa grabbed her bag of almonds from inside her gym bag. She always loved to snack after dancing. “The purpose is simple. It’s to work out and have fun. It’s just like any other form of dancing.” The raven-haired young woman popped an almond in her mouth.

“Actually,” Theodore interjected, although the conversation had nothing to do with him. “There are poles that spin and poles that don’t. The ones that spin allow an entirely different set of movements than ones that don’t. A peer of mine wrote their undergraduate thesis on aerial arts performers and–” He stopped, seeing both people staring at him. “Sorry. For interrupting.”

“I never said there weren’t poles that didn’t spin. I just said mine didn’t.” She replied with a perked eyebrow. Part of Marissa wondered if he had been waiting to share the information that he knew about the aerial arts performers this entire time or if he didn’t completely hear her correctly. “You’re fine.”

“If it’s all the same…” He pushed himself off from the wall in which he had been stood with his back and stepped closer to Marissa. “…it’s never bothered me whether it’s the pole moving or the person. It’s just fun to watch.” He gave the pole the quick once over, looking for hinges or something that would make it glaringly obvious to him. “Although, the illusion is shattered and I’m not sure I can forgive you for that.”

“Fair enough.” She replied with a smile as she stepped closer towards Jonathan. “I just know that some people think I am magical when really it is with the help of the pole itself.” Marissa chuckled when he talked about the illusion being shattered. “I guess ignorance is bliss. But I wanted to keep the public well informed.”

Cassie smiles, her strides becoming longer as she attempts to catch up to her friend. “This could be a movie, it certainly feels like one. Stuck in a town with people who could kill me in the blink of an eye. This is definitely a horror flick.” She laughs. “I wanted to know what you were up to. Sue me.”

“I never said you couldn’t check up on me.” She smiled. “All I was saying you could warn a girl, especially with a horror flick of a town like this that we are in.” Marissa teased her friend.

Liam punched the punching bag, hard. Hitting it several times with one hand before stepping back and then taking a jab at it with his other hand. He shifted his feet back and forth before he made a few quick jabs again, letting out a breaths as he did so. He stepped back, put his hands up close to his face to guard it before he punched the bag with his right hand again. He paused and stepped back when he heard the gym doors open. 

Liam ran a hand through his hair, forcing his breath to go back to normal as he glanced towards the customer. “What can I help you with?” 

“Yes, I was wondering if you may have seen a boy with slightly curly hair that might answer to spiderman around here?” Marissa asked looking for Ivan. She had been missing him lately and wanted to check and make sure that her favorite superhero was doing all right, but she seemed to have missed his gym session.

Her nod was terse, but her brief smile was grateful. She liked Marissa. She did. She was a good friend, a loyal person, at least came across like that around Sapphire herself. Plus, she’d always been inherently biased to ignore the bad in people who could and would dance well, in the end. It was probably a character flaw that Sapphire would come to regret, but, for now? None of her dance partners had tried to stab her, or anything nearly so dramatic. “Okay.” Her smile returned, brighter and wider and far less fleeting than its predecessor. “I need to have all the nuts on a sundae, though. And strawberry.” She nodded firmly this time, deciding. “Let me pick the song and all is forgiven.”

She chuckled as she noticed Sapphire’s smile grow brighter and wider. “Of course. Of course. A big sundae with all the nuts and whipped cream with a cherry on top.” Marissa added with a grin. “Sure. We will dance to your choice. No limitations.”

“I hate to be the barer of bad news,” Marissa really didn’t care, but she felt it was a good way to start off. “You do realize that the pole was spinning and not me, right?” She asked the person that was staring at her like she was some form of goddess after wrapping up one of the classes that she taught pole dancing. Sure, she was talented, but not enough to defy the laws of physics by spinning around a pole and staying at the same height. However, she realized this was the adult equivalent of finding out Santa isn’t real.
