Lori’s eyes slowly fluttered open, heavy with exhaustion, and for a moment she didn’t know where she was. Slowly sitting up from her slouched position, her sleepy eyes scanned around the room. They stopped abruptly at the sight of her son lying pale before her, a bandage around his skull, Denise attending him at his side. The events of the past twenty-four hours slammed into her heart like a train and suddenly she was wide awake.

“Denise?” Lori croaked, moving to sit on the edge of the chair and looking nervously between Carl and the doctor. She had been trying to stay up as long as she could and was frustrated with herself that she had fallen asleep – hopefully it hadn’t been for too long. “How – how long have I been out? How is he?”

She turned to her left, expecting to see her husband sitting beside her, but there was only an empty chair. Maybe Denise had finally convinced him to shower the blood and guts off his skin and change into some clean clothes. “Where’s Rick?”

 eyes shifting as she spotted movement on the other side of the bed, denise watched as lori woke. the exhaustion was evident on her face along with shear worry and panic for her injured son.  ❛ he’s fine, he’s okay. i was just checking to see how everything was. ❜ the doctor couldn’t help but worry about her work ( if it was good enough to save carl ). it wasn’t as if she was a surgeon or even a real physician. no, she had bailed during med school because she couldn’t handle it with her anxiety and instead had found interest in psychology.

❛ you’ve only been out for maybe a little over an hour. i’ve been here the whole time. ❜ her words are soft, and she hoped they sounded reassuring.  ❛ there hasn’t been any change. but you have to remember that no change is good. it means his body is working on healing itself. swelling is still there, but it’s normal ; the anti-inflammatory’s are doing their job. it’s just going to take time, lori. i know it’s hard, but all we can do is wait. ❜ denise isn’t going to say that when he wakes up they’ll truly know the extent of the damage. it’s not something that needed to be worried about right now.  ❛ he went to shower and get cleaned up. i made some speech about it not being sanitary and how we needed to minimize germs. hey, it worked. ❜

     eyes moving continuously in every direction, looking for any signs of danger, michonne shook her head.  ❛ i doubt it. we’ve gone weeks without rain. i’ll be surprised if the streams and small rivers don’t dry up. ❜ they were practically on the edge of a desert ; things were scarce, water included.  ❛ we’ll have to get as much water as we can carry. it’ll have to last us until we get back. ❜
