William "Dex" Poindexter from Check Please! is Forklift Certified!
I think it would be funny to cast unknowns for everyone except for people Bitty would recognize on sight because they're famous enough, but if Kent Parson is played by someone with name recognition we will never know peace.
I just saw a tiktok of a guy squatting in tight pants (as per request in his comments) and then he says “while I have your attention…” and starts asking people to donate to his favorite historical data base and that is the MOST jack zimmerman thing
For the longest time, I hc'd Dex as the type of old soul who would text in full sentences. Punctuation, capitalization, and all... and he'd rather eat glass than use "lol".
Then we find out that he's about as literate as a possum with cataracts.
But I realized that two things can be true.
On one hand, he texts like he writes.
On the other... he texts like he writes.
I reread some of y3 recently and I really wanna talk about how much subtext there was to the different ways we saw each of the gang find out about jack and bitty in bitty & I
specifically, how each reveal was carefully set up to match the level of each character's heteronormative perspective
lardo only needs to see bitty's heart doodles in his notebook before she comes to the right conclusion. although, based on what little evidence she saw, she could've assumed that bitty just has a huge unrequited crush on jack - she's the least influenced by hockey/bro culture, and therefore has the least prejudice. it only takes something small to tip the scales enough that the penny drops.
shitty sees a more in-your-face proof, needs a more explicit push (especially after he previously demonstrated his jack-shaped blind spot), but realistically, a few notes with the letter "B" on them don't point straight at bitty, especially since shitty wasn't even considering the possibility of jack liking guys. still, it's just obvious enough to shake him out of the toxic heteronormative mindset he observed jack with so far, and he bounces back quickly because he's constantly hyperaware of this mindset.
ransom and holster get solid proof that simply cannot be misunderstood, and it's not a coincidence that they find out last. they're the only two that actually live with bitty, and chances are that there have been multiple occasions where they stumbled upon evidence similar to the notebook lardo saw (jack's flannel in bitty's room, overhearing bitty skyping someone and calling them pet names, calling bitty out for how much inside info he has about the falcs). but ransom and holster - while they're great, supportive dudes - definitely operate under the heteronormative assumption that "unless specifically mentioned, people are generally straight" (as demonstrated when they assumed they'd hook bitty up with a girl in y1, and were caught off guard when he came out in that extra). if they saw evidence similar to what lardo, or even shitty saw, they wouldn't necessarily assume jack and bitty are together. most likely they'd rationalize it somehow, which is why the way they eventually figure it out is the most explicit.
people like to say omgcp is sugar-coated and unrealistic, but actually, ngozi chooses to address a lot of the subtle ways her characters are influenced by the toxic environment they exist in, even if she usually chooses to keep her actual plotlines lighthearted and feel-good. smh is full of kind people who mean well, but they're all, to various degrees, effected by the problematic world that surrounds them.
I feel like we need to talk more about the possibility of Jack having body dysmorphia as a result of him being a "chubby kid".
Like, he had to have been ridiculed in one way or another whether it was serious bullying or lighthearted joking. Sometimes when something about you is the base of enough jokes, it can really start to hurt.
I'd love to see like, someone talking about Jack still viewing himself as "undesireable" despite the fact that he is very attractive and very in shape! Cuz like a lot of the time when you loose the weight you still feel the insecurities that it carries!!!
I know the poor guy's already got enough shit to deal with but come on! It's a logical challenge for him to face!
Holster keeps saying “we could make a play outta that” because he keeps almost saying “we should add that to the choreo”
y’all do realize that zimbits are enemies to lovers right??? i feel like we kinda gloss over that dynamic between them a lot, especially in fanfiction.
i think that the bitty and ransom/holster friendship is SO. FUCKING. SPECIAL. and we dont talk about it enough
like bitty grew up with probably the epitome of "i dont hate gay people just dont shove it in my face/make it your entire personality" and shit like that. his family accepted him easily enough, but he was still scared, which makes me think that they probably were never outright hateful but maybe said some "diet" homophobic stuff while he was growing up
and apart from his general manners/mannerisms and maybe a bit of his style, bitty does just that. he knows better, knows he doesnt have to hide or push down his personality, but he does because he's afraid to make people uncomfortable. he knows he looks a certain way that will make some people assume, but he doesnt play it up.
Samwell helps. he gets more comfortable, comfortable enough to sing beyonce in the haus, comfortable enough to talk boy butts with lardo, but still not like, tumblr gay, internet gay, levels of openness
but ransom and holster are like super tumblr/internet/meme gays and constantly joke at/to bitty about anything and everything even slightly relevant. "Bitty, that's gay." ("Oh, uh, ha ha?") "No, you're supposed to say Jared we've been dating-" and how Holster can't do math and Ransom can't drive, etc etc etc
And they notice that he's never quite comfortable being as loose and casual about sexuality and lgbtq humor, so they ask him about it in a simultaneously bro & heartfelt way
and he admits that he just never felt like it was okay to be loud and open about stuff like that. but he isnt against it. and rans and holtz make sure its okay that they keep doing that and Bitty says yeah its fun, he just isnt used to it
but over time he reaches a sweet spot- he'll probably never be quite as meme-y and internet gay as rans and holtzy, but he starts picking up the jokes and references and really enjoying them. he gets comfortable being a little more obvious with his personality and identity. ransom and holster help him curate his tik tok feed for the perfect balance of gay humor and thirst traps. bitty unlearns that being gay openly is inherently uncomfortable for people around him. and thats mostly thanks to rans and holtz being so encouraging and fun about it.
I MISS T H E M
can't stop thinking about an au where tiktok was more of a thing when they were all at samwell and chowder making smh tiktok famous by just posting random shit like
"i asked bitty how many likes i would need for him to let me adopt the cat that ran across the ice at the sharks game and he said a million so get to it besties"
dancing to the out of touch thursday dance
filming holster enthusiastically lip syncing to "werewolf bar mitzvah, spooky scary, boys becoming men, men becoming wolves" (and including jack in the video against his will)
a compilation of the exhausted and exasperated look dex gives to nursey at least five times a day
a video of him trying on caitlin's clothes and her trying on his (chowder in those volleyball shorts is truly something else)
a compilation of every time a smh member will start filming and go "CHOWDER- SPLITS!" and he just does it on the spot
videos shot from a distance of bitty screaming out pop hits with no context
a long running series of the whole team doing something nuts like having impromptu karaoke at breakfast, cut to jack sitting there eating his eggs and looking midly perturbed
filming pointless roadie convos- of COURSE he'd post roaches vs attic and let the comments turn into a battleground
endless videos of r&h pranks
"who i think is gonna get most drunk tonight" pre-kegsters juxtaposed with shots of like, nursey falling from the roof
zimbits is one of the romances of all time.
thinking about the frogs senior year when they win the championship again. piling on top of each other after the buzzer goes off and yelling into each other’s ears and faces as loud as they can. dex, sweaty and grinning so much it hurts, accepting the trophy and taking his victory lap with it before he hands it over to nursey and chowder first. taking the team picture with dex in the middle, nursey with his arm over dex’s shoulder and chowder on the ice on dex’s other side
I would be enchanted to know more about the captains picking up the SMH legacy, Dex, Hops, etc!!
Sometimes I remember that Johnson literally just exists in the fandom to be a walking, talking plot device and then I start laughing
