A 12-year-old Jersey City girl was struck by a bullet fired from a stolen car that fled into Newark, where pursuing police stopped it and arrested four suspects. The girl, who was struck in the leg, and another person were shot on Martin Luther King Boulevard near Oak Street around 6 p.m., responders said. Police began chasing a black Volkswagen, which had been reported stolen out of Edgewater. The car hit a pedestrian and another vehicle on Communipaw Avenue as it fled onto southbound Route 1&9 and over the Hackensack and Passaic rivers, responders said. Shots may have been fired as the pursuit down Communipaw passed Route 440, according to an unconfirmed report. They stopped the heavily damaged vehicle at the ramp to the New Jersey Turnpike near Newark Airport, took four suspects into custody and recovered a gun, they said. The girl, whose wound wasn’t considered life-threatening, was taken to Jersey City Medical Center. Amy Cooper Faces Charges After Calling Police on Black Bird Watcher A white woman who called the police and falsely accused a Black man of threatening her life after he asked her to put her dog on a leash in Central Park faces a criminal charge, the Manhattan district attorney said on Monday. Amy Cooper, the woman in the park encounter — which was recorded on video, touching off intense discussions about false police reports made by white people about Black people — will be charged with filing a false report, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. “Today our office initiated a prosecution of Amy Cooper for falsely reporting an incident in the third degree,” Cyrus R. New Jersey’s COVID-19 emergency rental assistance program (CVERAP) kicks off today. The program is offering $100 million in rental assistance to low- and moderate-income households that have seen a reduction in income as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Here in Jersey City (Hudson County), the maximum income for a 1-person household is $55,250. The maximum income for a 4-person household is $78,900. As the fireworks-filled Fourth of July holiday looms, a cautionary tale about those entertaining explosives comes from Jersey City. That’s where Hudson County authorities say a 31-year-old man is dead following a fatal overnight incident involving fireworks. According to a preliminary investigation by Jersey City Police, the call came in around 1 a.m. on Saturday, and as emergency responders arrived in the 80's block Fremont Avenue they found a severely injured man bleeding heavily after suffering a massive chest injury at that location. Police say medical personnel attempts to revive the victim was unsuccessful. Authorities say the unidentified man was killed when the “commercial-grade firework device” exploded as he was attempting to fire it off. Police Department around New Jersey has seen a "massive increase" in calls where sleepless residents reported individuals setting off illegal fireworks at all hours of the night and early mornings. In Newark, Jersey City, Paterson and Camden, police have received 10 times as many calls about fireworks than they did in 2019 according to reports. The incident remains under investigation. Homicide investigators were called to the Jersey City waterfront early Saturday morning after a body was found floating in the Hudson River, authorities said. The body was found shortly after dawn near the Jersey City Harborside, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez. JERSEY CITY — A dip in the pool is what many kids and parents said they’ve been needing this summer as New Jersey continues easing out of quarantine. Pavonia/Marion Pool is the first outdoor residential pool to reopen Friday in the city, kicking off the Fourth of July weekend. Many kids lined up with their parents and guardians with beach towels in their hands and smiles on their faces. Timothy, 10, and Liana Herrera, 16, were just two of many who were waiting on line at the 914 Pavonia Ave. Pool for the 1 p.m. family swim session. Timothy said he was happy to be heading back in the water. The siblings added that they’ve been at home throughout the pandemic with their family, so it was nice to get out, they said. Nazek Boughgira rushed to the line with her 7-and 10-year-old. Her 10-year-old daughter said she was “really excited” to be at the pool. Boughgira said at the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, she was very cautious and kept her and her family at home, but now she’s ready to loosen up. “I’m just trying to live life normally again,” she said. Visitors to the outdoor pool are encouraged to wear a face covering if they’re not in the water to curb the possible spread of COVID-19. But face coverings are not allowed when swimming because of the risk of drowning. Social distancing is mandatory in and out of the pool. And for one pair of sisters, they stayed in their own lane in the pool. “(The water) is so cold!” Destiny Stevens said. “But it feels good!” her sister, Anyelina Sala, replied. Anyelina, 12, and Destiny, 12, were racing and doing back flips in the water. They were accompanied by their mom, and said they were glad a pool near them reopened. The two, who live up the block, said they already can’t wait to be at the Pavonia Avenue pool again. The 46-year-old Secaucus woman was waiting on the platform of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail’s Richard Street station in Jersey City around 4 p.m. when two people grabbed the leashed dog, Bella, and boarded the train as it was pulling away, a New Jersey Transit spokesman said. The woman notified NJ Transit police, who radioed ahead with instructions for the light rail’s doors to be kept closed at the next stop — Liberty State Park. Officers boarded the light rail train, took the pair into custody and reunited Bella with her owner. Noel Tineo, 18, of Jersey City, and a 17-year-old female from Hoboken were charged with robbery. New Jersey will not reopen indoor dining this week as planned in the first major reversal of the state’s Phase 2 coronavirus reopening plan, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Monday. Indoor dining was scheduled to resume Thursday along with several other big reopening steps including Atlantic City casinos, amusement parks, boardwalk rides and arcades ahead of the busy July 4th weekend. The canceled reopening also includes wedding venues and banquet halls. But the reopening of casinos remains scheduled for Thursday. Murphy cited recent scenes from expanded outdoor bar and restaurants showing packed crowds not wearing masks and ignoring social distancing as a reason from pausing indoor dining indefinitely. Murphy had provided the detailed restrictions for indoor dining at restaurants on Saturday, but changed his mind just two days later. The restrictions had included 25% capacity limits, tables spaced 6 feet apart, face coverings for staff and other rules. “Given the current situation in numerous other states we do not believe it is prudent at this time to push forward with what is, in effect, a sedentary indoor activity – especially when we know that this virus moves differently indoors than out, making it even more deadly,” Murphy said Monday at his regular COVID-19 briefing. “We have seen spikes in other states driven, in part, by the return of patrons to indoor dining establishments, where they are seated, and without face coverings, for significant periods of time,” he said. “We are also moved to take this step because of what we have seen in some establishments across the state of late.” Murphy added: “Overcrowding. A complete disregard for social distancing. Very few, if any, face coverings.” New Jersey reopened outdoor dining on June 15 after about three months of only allowing restaurants to provide takeout or delivery.
