Umida Akhmedova is an Uzbek photographer who, in 2007, produced an album of work that illustrated everyday life of people living in Uzbekistan. Uzbek authorities, however, criticized her art for portraying the people of Uzbekistan as “backward”. She has, since then, been charged with “slander” and “insult” against Uzbekistan.
In 2010, she was found guilty of these charges, but walked away without a prison sentence.
