Saw someone complaining that the fallen dragons aren't being taken care of but I think it makes sense (they can't divert time and resources to recovering dead dragons right now), and, more importantly!!, it fits the story being told. The war itself was the human frailties and rot inside House Targaryen made visible. Their sigil, the thing that makes them so special and supposedly godlike, so obviously mortal and rotting away the same as any dead animal would, devastates the illusion.

One of the things I really wish had gotten more focus in Reunion was the Rachel of it all. Theres a lot of opportunity there to explore the relationship between the two through the experiences they had, and it could have been used to make the breakup in the bae timeline feel more reasonable to fans who didnt like it in DE.

In the Bay timeline, Max and Chloe have a shared experience of having lost someone they were deeply in love with and having to live with that for the past decade. For the first time chloe is meeting a version of Max who actually understands her survivors guilt in a very specific way. That's super interesting and could easily cast a new light on why Chloe broke up with Max in Bae. A lot of what Max thinks about the breakup in DE comes off to me like her projecting her own self hatred onto Chloe. I think it would be interesting if Chloe opened up to Max about feeling like she didnt deserve a future with Max, and her resenting the powers that meant she got to have what rachel did would be really interesting.

And for the Bae timeline, youve got a pretty clear cut role reversal of their dynamic in LiS1 where Chloe has abandoned Max and Max had to make new connections to make it through. Only for the most important of those new connections to run away on her like chloe feared rachel would.

Both of these kind of end up running against my real big issue with Reunion where I feel like the fire plot doesnt really thematically connect to them getting back together. Its a thing for chloe and max to triumph over together, but its not something that necessarily says a lot about their bond in itself. Which is too bad because fire is so symbolically important to Rachel that it could probably have been more connected into things.

Ps, since this is the lis fandom I do just want to add on that the criticism here is not an invititation to shit on D9. Making a game in the time frame they were given is a nightmare and they had enough really perfect moments that I dont doubt that given more time in the oven it would have come together better.

I have many thoughts on Michel Koch’s review/Twitter thread, but the short of it is that while I find some of his ideas for before the storm interesting I don’t know if it could be better than what we got if only because of how badly they wrote the Chloe and David plot.

I have hated how they went about it for a very long time and I’m not about to stop now. Them trying to do a abusive parental relationship between Rachel Amber and her parents probably would’ve pissed me off lol

The thing I relate with Max the most about, and something fanfics tend to leave out, is that Max is nosy as shit.

Like it gets lost when LiS drops the Blackwell students but for a lot of the early part of the game Max talks with people to either impress them or learn shit about things that don’t matter in the slightest. This is a girl that goes through the trash of someone when they are literally only even five feet away. She’s going through Chloe’s shit within five minutes.

wait I haven't thought about Before The Storm in so long. you're telling me Rachel started the forest fire by dropping a burning photo of her father in the trash... and then Safi starts the observatory fire by dropping her cigarette in the trash???? (even if you dont get to see her do this, the choices summary at the end of the game describes this as the "truth" of the fire there).

i've also been thinking about all the animal symbolism throughout the games. like Max is associated with the doe, Chloe with the butterfly, William with the raven... but in addition to guiding Max along her journey, the doe shows up in key moments about Rachel too, standing over her burial site and later watching when they find her body. In Double Exposure Max continues wearing deer on her clothing but now also has an owl pin on her jacket. one is perched on a statue of Atlas on campus (symbolizing the weight of the world on Max's shoulders) right before she goes up to the overlook and finds Safi's body there.

AND remember what Max encountered in LIS1 in the rafters of the barn, right before they discovered the dark room and Rachel's body... it's a freaking owl.

this draws a very strong parallel between Rachel and Safi, and Chloe/Max's experience with discovering their deaths. its hard to pin down what the animal symbolism all means for sure, just taking a stab at it.

of course the real parallel is hard to miss in the overarching story: Max leaving Chloe when they were kids and Chloe learning to open her heart again with Rachel, who then dies... versus Chloe leaving Max (either through death or the breakup), and Max opening her heart again with Safi who dies. even though Max 'resurrects' Safi, their relationship is damaged so they haven't been in contact for months when Chloe drives her truck into Max's life again. and in the end, where Chloe was never able to save Rachel, now she's given the opportunity to help save Safi--and protect Max from the same terrible grief she went through. (Or not..... they fail and can only watch as fate plays out again).

idk man i just think there's a lot more thoughtfulness that went into Double Exposure and Reunion than meets the eye and i'm so glad people are giving these games a chance 😭
