Eren and Mikasa, the snakes
I keep seeing posts questioning why people are calling Eren and Mikasa snakes, why they’re accusing them of betrayal, so I want to just outline some key factors here that could hopefully answer for all those not understanding why people are upset. Disclaimer: I’m just trying to get a point across, not bash on characters. - When Erwin Smith asked them to offer up their hearts, Eren and Mikasa performed the salute – they explicitly told Erwin and the rest of the Scouting Legion that they were ready to fight for humanity with this gesture. - Joining the Survey Corps was entirely optional and it was made painfully clear that people would die. They could back out if they wanted. - Erwin entrusted his complete loyalty and faith to his new soldiers. He never lied to them about their probable fate, he never tried to trick them into becoming human sacrifices. - Even when the rest of the world was ready to put him down, Erwin stepped in and defended Eren Jaeger, ultimately saving him from death and granting humanity their deadliest weapon at the time; a titan shifter. Erwin could have very well ended his career and any trust humanity could have in the Survey Corps right then and there if things with Eren didn’t work out. - Most of the carefully devised plans that have led the characters to where they are now, right from day one, were Erwin’s. - Of course all characters contributed throughout the story and it wasn’t just Erwin alone who was carrying everybody, but he was the commander responsible for leading them all and not once did he falter. Responsible for dealing with social affairs, making sure they had the support they needed and their enemies within the walls would cause them no problems. - Erwin’s intelligence and overall importance has been expressed by other characters more than once. - When the time came where Erwin really was on his deathbed (chapter 84), everything Erwin has ever done for the Survey Corps, everything Erwin has ever done for Mikasa and Eren, seemed to be completely wiped from their minds. - Distraught over a friend and wanting to save them is one thing, but Eren and Mikasa weren’t shown even considering the commander’s survival. All they wanted was their friend back. - They (seemingly) legitimately believed that Armin was what could save humanity. A kid over an experienced veteran commander – quite a childish way of looking at the whole thing. - Both of them physically resisted their superior officer, Levi. Eren made an attempt to take the serum from Levi, while Mikasa drew her sword to his neck after pinning him down. He was holding the very delicate serum that, had he not cared more about keeping safe than retaliating, could have definitely broken and doomed both Armin and Erwin and very well their whole plan. - Not once did either Mikasa or Eren stop to consider that they’d be damning Armin by turning him into a titan. - After Levi chose to let Erwin be at rest and Armin was given the serum, both kids (all kids) abandoned the veterans to watch Armin eat Bert. Not one even spared their dying commander a glance. On his deathbed, the only people by his side, the last of his loyal followers, were Hanji, Levi and Flocke. This is why Mikasa and Eren are probably the most hated characters right now. This is why people are calling them childish, selfish snakes. They betrayed the salute, betrayed their commander, betrayed humanity, and betrayed their friend.

Okay , so some people are assuming that Kaneki's face has not been shown in this chapter because he may have taken a bite from Arima's body. This is too ridiculous to be true , isn't it?
I have always foreshadowed Arima taking his own life or be killed by someone else, rather than being killed by Kaneki for a number of reasons. One of these is how careful Kaneki was in his battle against him… how gentle and respecting he was….
Even when he was being stabbed by Ixa, or slashed into pieces by Owl, he never attempted to charge at Arima’s body. He always aimed for the quinque. Not once did he aim for Arima’s actual body. This is one of the reasons which led Arima to taunt him during chapter 74.
Even when Arima lost all of his quinques.. Kaneki was so puzzled and hesitant to aim for his arm or leg.
At the end… if you compare Arima and Kaneki’s state… Arima never shed a sweat, or got a scratch. Not.a.single.scratch… unlike during V14.
Kaneki’s expression during this chapter was that of anguish and pain. He looked as if he is saying: give me a fucking break… After all… although he practically won… he lost. He failed to protect what was important to him.
It is worthy to note that, although Kaneki was stricken by Arima’s act and ran towards him.. he only started crying when he finally realized…
it’s not only him who thinks of this as a father-son relationship…
that Arima himself… considers him his everything.
Do you… really think Kaneki is going to harm Arima, his father’s lifeless body… after all he has been through trying not to lay a single finger on it? after knowing that his feelings were mutual?
To everyone saying the Mikasa arguing with Levi goes against her past character development:
Ever since the beginning, what was Mikasa’s main goal? Protecting. Protecting her family, protecting the people she loves and cares about. Even when she obeyed Levi’s direct order to kill if needed (uprising arc), she was doing it because it would protect Armin and the others. She understood that it had to be done, so she did it.
I feel as if Mikasa NOT arguing would’ve been against her character. Here, Levi has the only shot of saving her best friend since 9 yrs old. The only chance. Even if she isn’t as protective with him in comparison to Eren, they’re still best friends. No matter the advantages of saving Erwin over Armin (not saying there are any but…) and no matter how much she’s developed in the story, her beginning morales still stand. She’s here to protect. She’s here to make sure Eren and Armin don’t die and early death. She will and always will argue for Armin’s sake because they are family, and she loves him like a brother.
I’m sorry if that didn’t make sense. I just needed to rant.
Concerning Chapter 83
All this hate on Erwin and Levi and all this talk of bad writing and shock value is wearing me out. I don’t feel that Levi would be breaking character at all by trying to save Erwin over Armin. He has lost so much already and is about to lose Erwin, who is the closest one to him. (This is without bias. This is it the truth.) Levi cares about Erwin. We see this demonstrated clearly in chapter 81. Levi is desperate and panicking. On top of that, he lost the beast titan, so that means that all of those recruits as well as Erwin were killed/injured in vain. They died for nothing. Levi is bearing that weight on his shoulders now and we forget to look past his “humanity’s strongest soldier” title to remember that he is still only human. Humans are selfish and make mistakes. Levi is no exception. He is being selfish in his desire to save his close friend and in doing so, would most likely be willing to fight Mikasa over it. What Mikasa could never understand is how much more Levi has lost than her. Levi was born underground in a brothel. His mother was a prostitute and was killed by a disease that a client gave her. He was trapped in that room with her corpse as he rotted away with it. He was found by Kenny (a serial killer who had no real experience with children and happened to be his uncle) and was left behind when he deemed Levi strong enough to survive on his own. Levi was alone. He had nobody. He became a famous thug and met his two close friends, Farlan and Isabel; only to watch them be eaten by titans. We all think he joined to survey corps and everything got better for him? In a way yes, but with all if the people he had gotten to know, in one expedition, they could all be wiped out. His entire squad being only a handful of the people he has lost over the years. Levi has lost a shit ton more than Mikasa and is about to lose Erwin. Now Mikasa watched her parents die and was kidnapped, but was saved by Eren and taken in to Eren’s family. She saw Eren’s mother die and lost her home, but still had Armin and eren. Levi had nothing. Levi never had the kind of security she had. If they were to fight, I would be understanding of it. Levi doesn’t want to lose anyone else. It’s not bad writing. It’s incredible. Levi isn’t acting out of character. He is showing us a side we haven’t seen before.
Love this analysis of Levi's character...

ATTACK ON TITAN - The Illusive Chapter 1 Storyboard:
Translation (by yours truly)
Raws (if you don’t want to rely on my shitty translation/want to see Isayama’s shitty handwriting)
I said I was going to do this, and I finally finished it. Here’s the “Illusive Chapter 1 Storyboard” that never made it to publication.
Isayama talks about it in the interview in OUTSIDE Kou (which I haven’t translated), but apparently this storyboard was drawn mostly as “something that would easily pass the serialization meeting”. Since he was uneasy later about just publishing it as it was, he ended up drawing the new Chapter 1 and 2 and got permission to publish things that way by using the Chapter 1 storyboard for Chapter 3 instead.
Seems like there were major changes to some characters made too. I’ve translated something related to this previously:

Hyouka is an adorable anime. I wish they’d made more than one season!
There's been speculation that consciously or not, Levi isn't being entirely honest about the plans he claims are all for humanity when Erwin's safety is concerned. Like in 72, it is truly best to stay behind when Erwin knows the plan best, make an unsuspecting Hange leader 2 days before leaving, and leave Erwin with limited damage control options if they fail and Eren is captured/killed. The fallout from 81, especially despite Levi's vow in 80, is making me consider this more. What do you think?
I think his faith and care for Erwin creates a sizeable blind spot that keeps him from being as effective as ideal. I wouldn’t agree with it being a lack of honesty; to him, Erwin’s safety and humanity’s longevity are linked. Eren gets saddled with being humanity’s hope in the grander scheme, but Erwin is the commander with the best odds of seeing that hope realized.
Put together with how deeply attached Levi is to Erwin, and with how Erwin and The Mission have never been in conflict before, the idea that he might view them as one and the same makes sense.
It’s a liability, but before Erwin starts discussing his dreams, there’s never a reason for Levi to notice it.
After that, it starts getting messy, but it’s an acknowledged messy, and in one read of Levi’s acceptance of Erwin’s presence in the latest mission, if Erwin’s heart isn’t truly with humanity, then his survival becomes less important, so humanity still isn’t losing out from Levi’s decisions.
Not a lot of choices are based on just one thing, even if that one thing is the only consistently stated reason. In Levi’s case, he has the bad luck of one of his subreasons turning counter to his main one.
