Groggily, Siegbert peeled his eyes open. His mind was cloudy, and even the simple effort of waking up seemed to make his body scream in protest. He was in an unfamiliar room, surrounded darkness. The rhythmic sound of dripping water echoed against the walls. When he tried to move his arms, he noticed the restraints. He knew struggling against them would be a fruitless effort.
The first question he had was why. Even if he was a prince, he couldnât be worth much. If his kidnapper wanted money, wouldnât it be far better to capture his father? But he couldnât deny the fact that his father was also a lot stronger, bigger, and well guarded than him. He supposed he was an easy target in comparison.
The sound of movement drew him out of his thoughts, and he felt his heart leap into his throat as he froze. He strained his vision against the dark, squinting to see if he could decipher anything beyond the amorphous shapes. What would he do if the source were a foe? He was in no position to fight. Suddenly, he felt very small. Gritting his teeth was all he could do to combat the wave of anxiety that threatened to flood him.
âHello? Is someone there?â
