During my college days, I stayed away from relationships. It wasn't that I disliked love I was just not into it... I knew that not every story ends the way we hope, and I didn't want to carry the weight of heartbreak.. Honestly,I was scared.
Our college was a national institute, so people were always going on dates, watching movies, and falling in and out of love. In our group, there was a guy who had gone through a painful breakup. We always encouraged him to come out of the pain. His closest friend never left his side. For almost a year, he kept telling him, "You'll move on. Give it time. Focus on your future. Go abroad for your master's, travel, live your life." Slowly, that friend healed.
A few years later, I met the one who had spent all that time motivating him. I smiled and asked, "So, what about you? Did you find someone?"
He smiled back, but it was a different kind of smile,tbh...
He told me that he had actually gone through a breakup even before his friend did. It had been six years. He had finished his graduation, completed his master's, and life had moved forward. But he hadn't.
Then he quietly took out his wallet. Inside it was an old childhood photo of the girl he once loved.
"How can I be with someone else," he asked, "when she's still here?"
I was staring at that photo. It was a girl's photo when she was a kid, probably when she was about 5 years old...
He looked at the photo for a moment before putting the wallet back into his pocket.
"I motivate people because I know how much heartbreak hurts. I don't want anyone to feel alone the way I did. But moving on..." He paused. "That's the part I still haven't learned."
I told him, "We're here to motivate you too."
He smiled and said, "Coaches don't play. They know the game better than anyone. It's easy to tell someone else to move on. Living it is something else."
For a moment, neither of us said anything. I just looked at him and realized that sometimes the people who give the strongest advice are quietly carrying the heaviest memories💌
