If his dad hadn't taken custody of him. If his dad hadn't died. If he hadn't gone back to New York. If Boris hadn't taken the Goldfinch back.

The Secret History is about terrible people who would have been terrible no matter what, but The Goldfinch is about a boy who didn't have to be.
