@hello-fish-here
It had to be done
Very messy sketches of an idea that wouldn’t leave my mind.
just to add to your "callum is a gentleman" post xD, he was also a gentleman when 1.) he apologized for clinging to Rayla on the floating seed thing (took his hands off of her like he didn't mean to grab her like that) 2.) when he didn't assume it was ok to hold on to her on the shadowpaw (he waited for her to say it was ok first), 3.) AND when he basically confessed at the oasis but reassured her that he wasn't complimenting her just to get her to kiss him :) (ps thanks for the open anon ask)
yess anon you’re exactly right!!
s3e2 he apologized for grabbing onto rayla w/o her permission (but she was fine with it so like)
s3e5 he (very clumsily) got rayla’s consent to hold onto her when they were riding the shadowpaw
s3e4 he wanted to clarify he wasn’t complimenting her just so she would kiss him
callum is also generally just very sensitive and polite around rayla especially when she’s having a hard time. he has this ‘soft voice’ he uses when hes addressing rayla with her issues.
s3e4 when they are travelling on their mounts, callum realizes something is wrong and tries to be sympathetic by saying “yesterday must’ve been a hard day for you…”
when callum asks what she’s thinking about on the ambler his tone is very gentle and he looks super worried
he tries to aleviate tension after nyx made fun of them with the blankets by laughing
(rayla lowkey almost knocked him over)
he is super gentle when he notices rayla crying- extending a hand to offer comfort
(i paused and this one frame is getting to me i’m cackling)
s3e8 when rayla runs out, callum asks if she’s okay
there’s probably a lot more but i can’t remember atm. anyways, my point is: rayla (most likely) has never been treated this way by anyone. not even by ethari, and ethari’s the soft one. someone caring about her and helping her in the smallest ways is probably very new but she eventually accepts it.
a gesture as simple as helping someone off the ground is something anyone can be grateful for. what’s even more important is that callum and ezran are the first people to allow rayla to feel what she feels and not shame her for it. may i call back to s1e5 when ezran flat out tells her: “why didn’t you just tell us before? it’s okay to be afraid of things.” (referencing her fear of water). this type of treatment and sympathy is new but rayla openly accepts it. it’s truly what she needed.
tldr; rayla’s character is about breaking out of unhealthy habits that she grew up with and callum’s gentleman skills are 13/10
(also no problem anon! i know some people are shy about sending asks)
The Korra *INTERNAL SCREAMING* meme no one asked for that I made anyway.
Because I will never get over Rayla's reaction in this scene.
Please have a set of frames where Callum was trying to be chivalrous as he moved Rayla to a safer place on the boat:
ALL THE WHILE … Ezran thinks something is going on – or, at least, growing – between Callum and Rayla.
tdp: where do we go from here?
or my ARC TWO (s4 and s5) predictions
So. S3 happened. A lot happened, not only in the season itself, but in the way it wrapped up 90% of the main arcs of the first main arc of the show. Even before it was announced that there would be three main arcs (and even before the seven seasons planned in total reveal, if I remember correctly) I had three main predictions
Narratively, at least one timeskip has to happen
Aaravos as endgame big bad and a unifying threat for both elves and humans to deal with on a large scale
Zym would be home by S4, and it wouldn’t fix Everything
So honestly, watching S3, and given how the season ended, I was gratified more than shocked. There were shocking moments in the season, for sure, but narrative wise, things had panned out the way I’d predicted, if not even better than I thought they would.
I also definitely got things wrong, though. I thought they’d return Zym home a little later, Rayllum had another season to go before being canon, and that returning Zym home would mean less than it ended up doing so, as I thought it would be a gesture from just one human from one kingdom, not Duren and Katolis together from the King and crown prince, amid other elves and important humans like Janai (the new Sunfire queen) and General Amaya.
That being said, here are my predictions going forward, as an expansion on the three I’m still holding, and the three that may lie ahead
A Timeskip
I’ve been gunning for a timeskip since March 2019, and honestly longer, if I think of when I first wanted it internally. It was something I was always very sure on narratively, just because it made too much sense, for these reasons down below:
The show had no fixed end of when Zym had to be returned. With no ticking clock (think of how in ATLA, everything was mandated by the Comet’s return) it gave an opportunity for things to stretch beyond just a few weeks, months, or even years
Seeing Zym grow into a slightly terrifying force of nature would make all too much sense, and while untrue, give weight to Viren’s words that he “would’ve become the most powerful creature in the world!”
Give Callum a reasonable amount of time, largely off screen, to connect to the other primal sources, otherwise multiple ones would have to be crammed into one or more seasons and it could begin to feel repetitious to see him connect to five other ones
Now it’s been confirmed that there will be a timeskip in between Books Three and Four. Yet because I wanted it so much, I did doubt myself a little. I also know that some people are hesitant about having a timeskip, and that’s totally understandable. (I personally got used to them because the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise, including the tv show, has five timeskips.) The main concern seems to be of what if the timeskip is too big, but I don’t think that would happen for a number of reasons.
I’m personally betting on anytime from three months to one year as the time skip between S3 and S4, specifically six months. We don’t want to keep Aaravos cocooned for too long and have to keep flashing back for information, but long enough for things to settle. A timeskip of this manner would:
Allow Ezran time to grow and settle into his kingship in a time of peace - or working towards it in better ways than he was previously able to
Solidify Ezran’s council (Opeli and Corvus) and Soren reinstated as crown guard for the true king
Give a reasonable amount of time for Callum to more or less master sky magic and set hit sights on another arcanum
Rayla having fulfilled her duty as a Dragon Guard for a while, so that when the story picks up again her leaving it makes sense
Show off more established Rayllum, in a more secure way than in the immediate aftermath of 3x05 did
Zym can grow (and his relationship with his mother) now that he is no longer what binds the Trio together in quite the same manner
But mostly, for post-war politics which I’ll get into it down below
Post-3x09 Politics
Season three hinted at a lot of really interesting Xadian politics, and told us some really important things too. Namely that the elves are non united and each type/group seems to operate under their own command. The Dragon Queen is less of a reigning monarch and more just a monarch for the dragons themselves, which some elves then choose to serve. It also shows that among dragons there’s big issues of dissent, like Sol Regem, a previous monarch (however that works) being uncaring about burning his technical prince alive.
That’s not to say that what Ezran and to a certain extent, Katolis, did doesn’t matter. Katolis and Duren’s alliance will be stronger than ever, and with Janai as the Sunfire Queen, you’ll have her factions as well (having Amaya, who was such a prominent General at the Breach, in a relationship with her / on her side doesn’t hurt either).
I am curious about the other human kingdoms though, as two lost their rulers and had no replacement mentioned, but they clearly aligned with Kasef. In addition, King Ahling will have survived and recovered from his encounter with the shadowy assassins, but will have to come to terms with how his son died. And it was still never confirmed to any of the human kingdoms that Xadia hadn’t staged that attack in the first place, but Viren with dark magic.
Things will be strained in more ways than one, and I’m really excited to see where it goes. And also how it can reflect in our main characters, specifically the trio…
Political Trio Theory
This is the theory I’m most excited for it, and it hinges on our core three: Ezran, Callum, and Rayla. Each are completely different people than they were at the start of the series and they’ve grown so much and have chosen new responsibilities or paths for themselves. And of course, because it’s me and my brain, I have gone the angst route.
Ezran and Rayla’s relationship is one that is one of my favourites and has always been very sweet. They don’t tend to really disagree and Ezran was the first one to trust her, even if he was the only one out of the two princes who was her target. Rayla to a certain extent also takes care of him, and it’s Ezran in more ways than one that brings her and Callum together. So I think, to a certain degree in the next arc of the show, we’re also going to see him rip them apart.
That’s not to say Ezran will do so maliciously or on purpose, or that I think Callum and Rayla will break up. I don’t think any of those things. But I kept thinking about Rayla’s line in 2x08: “You’re not my king. But you are my friend.”
Rayla is still an elf from Xadia with her own duties, and her own political loyalties. Ezran also has a different responsibility to his own people, the other human kingdoms, and to upholding peace. Callum, meanwhile, is caught in between. He’s a human who will likely live in Xadia and can connect to a primal, but he’s still a prince of Katolis. He loves Rayla but Ezran is his brother and the only family (other than Amaya) that he has left.
So basically, I think Ezran and Rayla are gonna disagree on something major, and while I think Callum will align a bit more with Rayla’s viewpoint, I think he may still choose to stand by his brother’s side. What the disagreement could be about, or why, I don’t know. But I think Callum is going to be torn between two places and people, and he’ll have to make some really hard decisions. I also think that Rayla will understand him standing by Ezran better than Ezran would if Callum just flat out sided by her, but that is just flat out speculation.
This would also take the external conflict and internalize it hard, particularly because not only have Ezran and Rayla never disagreed to the same magnitude that Callum and Rayla did, but that they would probably work to resolve it because of the effect it’s having on Callum, too.
Our trio has been our solid ground, to speak, for all of Arc 1, and given that Arc 2 is really going to shake things up, and the idea of peace being just as hard as war (but more worthwhile) I wouldn’t be surprised to see it extremely tested before they re-solidify, stronger than ever.
The Coins
When we see Viren after the fall, it’s unknown if the bag of coins is with him. However we do know that Rayla knows there are elves in there, and that Gren knowns Runaan is one of them. Rayla also knows that her parents didn’t run away and would therefore think them worthy of being saved.
Viren and Claudia being spotted would be motivation enough for her to leave the Dragon Guard, perhaps, along with Callum and some allies to try and find the coins. I also think a confrontation between Claudia, Callum, and Rayla is coming eventually, given how messy their history is and how much resentment Claudia would hold towards Rayla (who is the reason Viren died, after all).
I think by the end of Arc 2 (aka s5) Rayla’s parents and Runaan will be out of the coins so we have everyone together before the final Arc and all the fun possibilities and character work that can bring. It also might be one of those moments, since S5 will presumably end on a terrible note (especially since Arc 1 ended on such a high note at the end of the day) in a very ‘Empire-Strikes-Back’ sort of way, with of “at least we have this good thing that happened / we’re all alive.”
Aaravos Backstory
We got more hints of this in S3, but given that something is going to be emerging out of that cocoon at one point, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get more of the full story. Especially since now Claudia is embroiled in Viren’s relationship with Aaravos, which might deteriorate while hers simultaneously improves.
I also think it’s important to get out Aaravos’ backstory, and why he was imprisoned, and all of the possibly good and evil things he’s done explained to the audience at least, so we can understand the full weight and consequences of why him getting out of that mirror is a “Oh shit no” moment when the time comes.
But yeah, that’s basically all I got for now, and I hope you enjoy my theories! Feel free to add yours or discuss them down below! :)
@scarlet-curls As promised from my main.
no but like rayllum’s romantic development was so good in s3 i could cry, like, episode by episode
3x01
reaffirms how much rayla values and cares for callum, who has probably never been this highly praised in his life
causes callum to begin to confront the very real fear of losing her: “this is the worst idea you’ve ever had, he’s gonna burn you to a crisp!”
shows how well they can problem solve and communicate silently
“my best friend.”
that fact that callum is absolutely ecstatic to be called that
3x02
shows them having just having fun together in xadia with shared enthusiasm
teasing but all in good nature, even about appearances: “no, that’s a good look for you, really”
rayla telling callum more about her childhood and sharing a special place with him
and proving just how well she knows him: “i thought you’d like them.” “i love them!”
them laughing together added ten years to my lifespan
3x03
rayla sharing a magic custom with him that includes adorable dancing, and her unbridled enthusiasm at showing off where she grew up that again, he fully matches
“i want to show you everything! […] i can take you where they make the best moonberry surprise! i can show you where i grew up, where i went to school—”
callum meeting and remembering her remaining family
“tall? pointy? aimed a bow at me. mmhm, he seemed nice.”
“hey! ethari was it? you didn’t even give rayla a chance to explain herself.” listen to me! rayla doesn’t deserve this!”
3x04
making decisions together and weighing the pros and cons of trusting nyx
callum telling her about his childhood/family and trying to get her to open up
the fact he can make her laugh even when she was crying just a few moments ago
running after her and not letting her push him away even when she snaps at him because he knows she’s hurting
“rayla, you’re the most amazing person i’ve ever met.”
and saying all of those things just because he believes them and needed her to know and wanted to cheer her up
3x05
proves that these two work as friends and teammates first and foremost, and regardless of any romantic mishaps, they would stay friends
her saving his life without question
him waiting until she gives consent/permission to touch her
callum trusting rayla when he jumps on the ambler
the look on his face when he decides that now is the time to confess
the way rayla hesitates after she grabs his scarf and their eyes meet for a moment, like she’s double checking. “i’m going to kiss you now… okay?” and his soft little wow, because he really loves this girl
3x06
them having fallen asleep together in such a simple way with his head on her shoulder, but it says so much about casual physical intimacy and how safe and comfy they feel with one another
rayla listening and supporting callum when he talks about the dragon king and his family.
like she dismissed his “i hear your big feelings” thing before, but that’s exactly what she does now: “of course it does. it’s painful. how could you feel any different?”
for that matter, callum opening up about sarai and telling rayla about his mother, which was something he closed up about in s1.
3x07
the casual flirting and teasing and being able to make fun of themselves
how casually affectionate and comfortable they’ve become with each other and their soft smiles when they pull away from their kiss
holding hands when they go to make ibis
like really, they’re just best friends who are dating now, and it’s the best thing ever
3x08
callum being there for him when she’s in a place that hurts the same way she was for him in 3x06. him taking her hand and tugging it closer to him
rayla giving him the pendant as a symbol of her love for him to hold onto
callum refusing to just let her go and watching what happened to her parents alone, because he knows she wouldn’t agree and if they really did run, watching them do so would break her
“it’s your choice,” he says, letting her move on. knowing she may still make the same choice as before, but having had time to process it. “no one else’s.”
and rayla choosing to include him anyway, now that she’s let go of her past, because he’s a part of her future. “we should decide together.”
3x09
rayla calming him down with just the touch of her hand (like in 2x03) and them appreciating the sunrise together.
callum wanting to tell her he loves her just so she knows, even if they’re already a couple
“go to her.” god bless you ezran
the sheer anguish on callum’s face and his scream when rayla goes off the edge
and him deciding he’s either going to save her or die trying
her hands in his hair when they kiss and soar upwards
them lacing their fingers together and holding hands, all smiley in front of the dragon queen
like all the casual arm grabbing and hand holding, the way they could make each other smile and reassured one another like no one else, callum being there while she dealt with the loss of her family the same way she had for him, making each other laugh and all the teasing, them still always being best friends at heart even if they’re giddy and excited about this new stage of their relationship.
them making each other the happiest they’ve ever been even while on the hardest part of their journey warmed my heart so much
they’re so perfect i love him
FbF: “A Leap of Faith”
So I got me an HD Clip of Rayla falling to her death in TDP’s “Final Battle”
Here’s what I get of her emotional condition by watching the scene frame-by-frame:
- - - - -
She glanced towards the edge, realizing there’s only one way to stop Viren…
She realized that, if she do it, she will die.
Yet she made up her mind.
She is 100% committed, even fully realizing that she would have to pay with her life.
And she followed through, closing her eyes to not doubt her action, while locking her hands to seal both the fate of Viren and herself.
As she fell, she did NOT flail. She had accepted her fate. No regrets…
… except one.
And that one regret caused her to turn around mid-fall, trying to look back to the platform …
She hoped she can have one last look at the boy that she loved, Callum …
… and tears came out of her eyes as she understood she would never stand beside him again.
But what she saw… stopped her heart.
Her stupid boyfriend – whom she loved so much – had recklessly jumped after her, frantically trying to reach her.
So she reached out to him, as he reached out to her…
And at that exact point in time, she understood what is meant by True Love.
…
If we live, we live together.
If we die, we die together.
Wherever you will be, There I will be as well
.
Tell me if im wrong (i dont remember much of the sign launguage my friend taught me) but when Callum says "its a misunderstanding, Rayla is our friend" hes actually signing "[Rayla] is girlfriend"
Which makes Amaya signing "[Janai] thinks im cute but wont admit it" even funnier
Edit: the professionals have said hes spelling out Rayla ("R-A-Y-L-A is friend")
nyx: so why did you save me?
even after i tricked you
and betrayed you?
callum: because she’s rayla
Rayllum gang, come get Y'ALL'S JUICE
Gotta love the sarcasm
