new Eridian headcannon time: once the xenobiologists figure out Earth genomes, they figure out a way to literally stitch base pairs together to make new Earth organisms (maybe similar tools already exist for some branch of Eridian microsurgery), using large sound projection systems that let them “see” at a near microscopic scale. From that, the scientists can just divide into teams and stitch together a whole new organism from parts harvested from Grace, using the genomes in the hail Mary’s database as a guide.

mainly I think they’d use it to make plant seeds, since those might be less complicated to go from genome to actual living organisms. this would give Grace access to the entire list of plants whose genomes we’ve sequenced (which includes lots of edible plants and staple grains and even weed) as well as some new and interesting hybrids born out of whatever the fuck the xenobiologists feel like making.

and of course to rope bloodymary into it, if Simon’s still got his Eden seed then the xenobiologists can use it as a bit of a guide to model the new seeds for their creations off of. plus I think simon would be super invested in learning how to care for all the new plants, which would be easier for him to do since they’d have to be in the Earth atmosphere anyway. Grace is obviously super invested too but I don’t think he’d have as much of the patience needed to grow the genetically engineered seedlings into mature plants like Simon would

Why do kiwis have such massive fucking eggs “it’s because they are related to ostriches and-“ yeah ok but like why didn’t they evolve smaller eggs if I was in charge I would do that shit pronto. Thoughts?

their big eggs are actually that size for a similar reason to human babies having massive heads!! being bigger at birth can be important.

kiwi are trying SO HARD to become mammals. fur-like feathers, whisker-like feathers, little beady eyes, nocturnal, great sense of smell.... that's basically a mammal!! they're well suited for life on the forest floor.

their big eggs work alongside these adaptations to give them a leg up in the bird world. their young hatch already feathered! they're precocial, which means they're born with the ability to open their eyes and move around. like foals.

big egg = more powerful offspring from the get-go. babies don't need to spend precious time vulnerable while they develop on the ground when they've already done all that in the egg!

(unfortunately, with the introduction of mammals to aotearoa, these adaptations are a little less useful...)

They look like one of the downsides of emerging from an egg fully formed is how aware you are off just having come out on egg. First minute alive, already dealing with some fucking experience.

my cat hates taking his pills. the only way we can get him to eat them is to turn it into an elaborate pantomime - we take the packet out of the cupboard slowly and hold it up, saying “oh!! what’s this? what’s this? a TREAT? a TREAT for louis????” while making surprised faces. we offer him a pill… then, before he has a chance to sniff it, we wag our fingers at him and replace it in the packet so it becomes a Tantalising Forbidden Mystery. we continue doing this until he’s so confused and excited that he will eat the pill as fast as possible, just so he can find out what it is before we can take it away from him again. as soon as he’s eaten it he looks utterly disappointed and betrayed, like a child who just ate a delicious sweet only to find it was a chocolate-coated brussels sprout. it never gets old
