Scena Illustrata
The Gorgon and the Heroes ca.1895–99) by Giulio Aristide Sartorio (February 11, 1860 - October 3, 1932). In Greek myth there were three Gorgons, all sisters, the immortals, Stheno and Euryale, and the mortal Medusa. All three were traditionally portrayed as “monstrous females with huge teeth like those of swine, brazen claws, and snaky hair.” Sartorio is grouped with the Symbolists movement in art, thus his beautiful Gorgon with winged feet and luxurious hair, walking over her victims was likely a borrowed for dramatic purposes. Sartorio was also one of the first artist who was also a film director.
