It started off in a sweet and cliché way that he thought it was fate. There was no other explanation for it. Things like this didn’t happen to him, usually people looked at him in disgust. Muttering awful things before giving him a fake smile and then rushing off like he had some type of disease.
It always left a dull ache in his chest that he tried to push away. And when he ended reaching for the same book at the same time as you, he expected the same response. Quickly pulling his hand back like your touch burned him and flinched when you looked at him as if preparing to see the same look.
Maybe you’ll scream at him like the last person. Maybe you’ll just scoff and mumble how you don’t need it anymore before walking away to ‘clean’ your hands. He prepared for each negative reaction instead of this one.
What he didn’t expect was for you to smile at him. To apologize and offer him the book which lead him to be a flustered stuttering mess. He barely remembered much other than grabbing the book from you and rushing out. Not even giving you the chance to react by the time he was out the door and back in his car.
Ever since that day he couldn’t get you out of his head. How you smiled at him, how kind your eyes were and soft your touch was. He could only beat himself up for not being more confident. Running off like a coward instead of trying to talk to you.
The first person to treat him like a human being and he fumbled. Hard.
A groan left his lips each time it came to mind. At first he just wanted to find you to give you the book and apologize for his actions that day. It was only right with how sweet you had been.
But that innocent wish had turned into something more twisted. It started off with just waiting at the library until he saw you again. Then it became finding out your name when he ‘accidentally’ overheard a conversation with you and your friend until it became him watching your every move.
Stalking you both online and in person. He craved to learn more as time continued. Wanting to desperately be at your side 24/7 instead of the little time he had from when he got off work to when you get back home.
What he didn’t expect for was his wish to be answered like this.
Walking into work one morning, basically half sleep from staying up and looking through your social media page once more, he thought he was hallucinating when he saw you.
Maybe he had been looking at too many pictures of you or was probably more sleep deprived than he thought.
But that thought disappeared when you started getting closer. Your eyes lighting up when you saw him and immediately waving hi like yall known each other for years. That caused many people in the office to stare at him.
A sweet pretty thing like you smiling at him all bright like he hung the stars.
It caused him to turn red and he could feel himself getting sweaty. Starting to tremble, he forced himself to look away and head straight towards his desk in hopes to get away from all the attention. Especially yours.
But it was never that easy and it seemed like the universe was loving this sick joke they were playing on him.
Throughout the day he kept bumping into you. Whether he was on his way to the restroom or the break room. Or how you started to come to him for each question. He didn’t want to be rude. He wished he was more confident and would make more conversation than the awkward small talk or making up some excuse so he could leave whatever this was.
He so desperately wanted to be close to you. For you to stay with only him throughout the day but he could already hear the rumors starting. Noticing the glances he was getting and hearing yalls names together in the conversation.
No doubt people were trying to figure out how you knew him and why you were so nice? No one was this sweet to him. The only time they were was when they needed a favor but even then it was obvious it was forced. Not the genuine kindness you were showing him.
He even noticed when other people tried coming up to you. Tried making some type of conversation but you politely shut down each one. And each time you noticed him your eyes would light up once more but he would rush off before you had the chance to say anything.
By the end of the day, he was exhausted. It was one of those rare times he was glad that he was the only one left in the office.
A small sigh left his lips as he walked out of the break room and went back to his desk with a fresh cup of coffee in hand. But he froze when he noticed something on his desk. Something that shouldn’t be there.
Don’t work too hard! See you tomorrow!
His brain short circuit seeing the note and a small treat next to it. He wanted to believe this was some prank, but he recognized your handwriting by now and the small heart at the end that was uniquely yours.
A small groan left his lips and he crouched down as he covered his face with his free hand.
There was no way he going to survive the next 6 months.
