axelle judges bl shows > My Ride
summary: Mork, a taxi driver, meets Tawan and the two strike a friendship that helps them get through the difficulties in their lives.
where to watch: dramacool
- the characters were amazing imo. usually I prefer characters who have more personality and โbiteโ to them than mork & tawan, but here even though theyโre kinda perfect characters who are lowkey a bit boring, I still loved them so much??? I think itโs because the show really took the time to develop them, and even though personality-wise theyโre not the most interesting, I feel like situation & plot-wise, they definitely are, and it made them such endearing characters that I really, really love. also I really enjoyed all of the side characters as well!
- going hand in hand with that, I absolutely love the relationship between these two. they really remind me of phunnoh from love sick who are one of my all-time fave ships, so it really says a lot! I love how they slowly grow from strangers to friends to best friends to lovers, it felt so organic & respectful. theyโre also very healthy & communicate really well together, which is probably where the phunnoh comparison comes from. seeing them grow together in such an organic & healthy way truly was such a pleasure, and they really captured my heart!
- the story is basic but super compelling. I genuinely wouldโve never thought this show would capture my heart as much as it did, but the writing really managed to take a pretty simple story & make it interesting, quirky & insanely endearing, which is no small feat! there wasnโt one moment where I was bored, and they even managed to make a cheating storyline bearable for me, so the writing really was great!
- the female characters arenโt demonized & actually given some depth! whichโฆ is amazing that itโs still a criteria for bl shows in 2022, but it still definitely is. I loved tawanโs best friend & their supportive relationship together, as well as the fact that she got her own love story & was pretty well developed! as for morkโs girlfriend, I loved that they gave her a redemption storyline & once again humanized her instead of trying to make her a villain.
- every ship was interesting imo! I really liked the side ship with yoon & the actor from my dream, I thought their banter was great & it was the most expressive and fun character Iโve ever seen yoon play & I highkey wish he gets more roles like this bc it suits him a lot better imo! as for tawanโs best friend & the coffee shop guy, they were cute as well :)
- gay uncles! BICKERING gay uncles!!! thatโs all I have to say <3
- the boyfriend cheating part is definitely the most annoying part, but honestly even then I feel like it was handled the best it couldโve been?? like I couldโve done without that whole storyline, but it did not impede on my love for the show at all so *shrugs*
- did not LOVE the timejump at the end as I almost always do, and I didnโt LOVE the fact the fact that mork couldnโt just stay a taxi driver & had to aspire to become more specifically for tawan, but oh well. Iโm truly nitpicking as this point lol.
would I rewatch it: already did it ๐
I went into this show with very low expectations, and it genuinely blew them away. For such a basic premice, it managed to have so much soul & authenticity, itโs definitely one my favorite shows of 2022 <3
