I didn’t realize how whitewashed Tejano culture is in Austin until I started living here. This is a beautiful and sobering story of news anchor Michelle Valles’ experience of racism at work.

I am only knee deep, but after flailing helplessly for twenty minutes it is clear that I am drowning. It takes several additional minutes to accustom myself to this fact, for it feels like a failure as fundamental as forgetting how to breathe. Writing: Nina Sudhakar Photography: Saima Desa

Mathura elephants get jumbo sized sweaters via The Daily Star
“According to the Times of India, the Wildlife SOS centre in Mathura is home to around 20 rescued elephants that are either blind or lame or just recuperating after suffering years of abuse. The report mentions that the elephants were rescued from illegal captivity, trafficking mafia, circuses and even street begging operations. The pachyderms have endured decades of abuse, cruelty and harsh conditions that have taken a toll on them physically and psychologically.”
Beauty benefits of Turmeric
Heels cure
Take two tablespoons of turmeric and add two drops of coconut oil to it. Apply the paste to the cracked heels to get an instant relief. This will prevent the skin from infections also.
Scars and pigmentation
Hyperpigmentation or acne scars can be calmed down easily with turmeric. Combine turmeric with lemon juice and apply.
Dark circles
To keep the dark circles at bay, take advantage of turmeric. Mix the turmeric powder with a sufficient amount of buttermilk and dab it around the eyes.
Acne solution
Add a pinch of turmeric to one tablespoon of starch, milk and a few drops of essential oil. Apply to the face evenly, these will give you acne free skin when applied regularly.
Dandruff treatment
Mix the turmeric powder with olive oil and apply to the scalp, leave it for 15 minutes and rinse off. The antibacterial properties of turmeric fight dandruff and gives relief.

I don't think the answer is that I can't practice something that is not from my culture, and I think that happens in a lot of QTPOC communities... How can we be more complex and say - how can I do that with honour, respect and knowledge versus cutting ourselves off from practices that are incredibly liberating ... especially if you've been cut off from your own lineage.
CarmenLeah in Spirit Medicine (A BGD Podcast) on Cultural Appropriation and Healing Practices
It’s so refreshing to hear cultural appropriation talked about from a POC perspective! It is critical to acknowledge when we are engaging in cultural appropriation - many healing practices are by invitation only (in Indigenous communities on Turtle Island, as discussed in the podcast) - but not all spiritual practices have the same relationship to Western imperialism.
Decolonizing Yoga has a compelling piece on the complexities of modern yoga as a practice that persisted and transformed alongside British hegemony in India - though it definitely states some contested claims, among them the theory of the Indo-Aryan (Persian) invasion of North India, which British imperial forces used to justify European colonization.
