Eating applesauce and watching Buffy the vampire slayer. So this is is life after getting your wisdom teeth out.
How do I begin?
And by that I mean, how do I even begin to summarize the end of Santa Monica summer project? It officially ended a week ago, and I've been meaning to do this since before it ended. I've been putting it off, truth be told, because I have no idea how to process the fact that one of the hardest, most growing, and yet, best summers of my life is over now. I think my last major post was made about a week or two after staff left. As you know, my post-staff project role was an action group leader. Man, that was challenging. God really loves to stretch me, for example, with time management. I think there was one week where I only got around to discipling one of my girls, and the last week I had to disciple 4 girls at once because I left project a day early. Maybe this is God giving me a taste for what discipling during the school year would be like. Other than the time management problem, being an action group leader was incredibly rewarding. I love the girls in my action group so much, and I hope to be friends with them for the rest of my life.
Life at Mickey D's didn't change much. All in all, it was a decent project job. I would never ever want to work at McDonald's if I weren't on project. But I made good relationships, and I don't regret my time there. And when I got my last paycheck, they gave me a gift of a t-shirt, bag, notebook, pin and card signed by all my coworkers. I was so touched - I would never have expected something like that from a fast food restaurant.
When it comes to the real reason why I came on project, I feel no regrets there. I came on project to share the gospel. During our second to last outreach, I had the privilege of seeing someone come to Christ. Everyone, we have a new brother in Christ, and his name is Dennis! During that outreach, our point was to reach Christians who were struggling in their walk and use the evangelism tool, "Satisfied". The point of Satisfied is to tell people about the holy spirit, and how we must be filled with Him everyday in order to truly walk with the Lord. We had a large banner with various words written on it, and we stood next to the pier. There were quite a few negative words on it (and we even got criticism from a man about that), but there were also positive ones. I was standing by the banner that day, as opposed to going out and initiating conversations. It was then when I saw Dennis standing a little bit away, looking at the banner. I motioned to my friend Michael, and we went to talk to him. We ended up talking with him for over an hour. We went through our entire survey, we shared the KGP with him, and he accepted Christ. He came from a Catholic background, and had done things he had been judged for by those in the Church, We emphasized that not every Christian is judgmental, and that everyone sins, but Christ died on the cross to save us from those sins. It is not by works, but by faith. I think he was most shocked to hear how I pray. He was used to memorizing prayers, so when he heard that I just say "Hey God" and start talking to him like a friend, he was like, "whaaat?". And so that day, he accepted Christ. It was so surreal. I've never seen someone come to Christ before, let alone be used by God to help lead someone to him. I am so blessed to have been part of that conversation.
All in all, project was an incredible gift from God. It grew me an incredible amount (it still is). I have incredible friends that I hope I will have the privilege of knowing for the rest of my life. I have a new passion for reaching the lost of my campus, and I can't wait for the school year to start. I can't wait to lead a Freshman bible study. I can't wait to implement everything I've learned. God is going to do great things this year; I will be blessed simply to witness them, let alone be a part of them.
Today I had my last bible study with my lovely action group. I've had the pleasure of growing, laughing and sharing a tiny room with these girls for the past 8 weeks, and then leading them and discipling them for the past 4. They speak such truth into my life, and I'm so sad to be leaving them on Friday. But I know they'll be in my life forever.
Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. (Isaiah 46:4)
I’ve decided this is essentially my project theme song. Lord, let me put all my faith in you and walk upon the waters.
So, I suck at updating blogs?
I say that mostly because I'm pretty sure this my third post about project and I only have 3 weeks left. So, let's do an update on things:
Staff is gone! Traditionally in longer stateside projects, the staff leaves halfway through and students are assigned staff roles. This sounds like it could be an absolute disaster, but it always ends up really good. The staff leaving has allowed us to take control over our own project. We're not just following rules, we're making the rules. We are fully aware that now project is only as good as we make it, and so we're going to make it awesome.
Like I said, students are assigned staff roles. Everyone has a role, and that assignment was prayed over by staff before they left. God wants us in the roles we were placed in, and this week our topic is humility - very fitting when peers are suddenly leading other peers and submitting to other peers. My staff role is action group leader. My job is to lead bible studies with my action group - also, in my case, my roommates - and to disciple all the girls in it. This is such a stretching role for me. Next semester I'll be leading a Freshman bible study, all by myself. Some challenges I have to face in this role are things like time management. Actually, that's the main one. I work 40 hours a week, and I have to find time to disciple 5 girls in addition in the time that I'm not working or doing project activities. So far its halfway into the week and I've only done one disciple session. So here's a definite prayer request: that I find the time to disciple my lovely roommates.
Speaking of work, here's an update on how the daily grind at Mickey D's is going: It's going well! I have my off and on days. I work early and 8 hours a day. It's tiring, but it's actually kind of fun. However, I still have challenges. Firstly, getting to know my coworkers better and have intentional conversations with them. Second, showing God's glory in all that I do - so doing my job well. And again, because emphasis shows importance: getting to know my coworkers better, and having intentional conversations with them.
All in all, project has been wonderful. It's challenging and growing. I'm trying to work on being more intentional in my relationships with everyone on project. There are some people that I hang out with a lot, and I would like to try to get to know everyone better and show true care for them. I'm also praying for help with time management. Growing with this will definitely help me in the year, and I can't grow without God's help. Lastly, I need help in remembering why I came here: to share God's word. With how much responsibilities I have, it's hard to want to go out sharing on my days off - I just want to run errands and rest. But like it says in Hebrews 12:1, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before." Please continue praying that I will run the race that has been set out for me. Only God can be my source of strength and rest, and I can do all things through him.
But why does she have to leave…? Annie, thank you for being such an amazing discipler, action group leader and friend. You helped me grow more in one month than I have in one year. Now I have to follow your act as action group leader, and I’m incredibly grateful for the challenge. :)
Here are some photos from project so far! I'm having a wonderful time, and I'll post a more in depth post about what I've been learning later!
Worship is more than a song. It’s a way of life. An entering of God’s presence day in and day out. To live with both eyes focused on Jesus, entirely centered in Christ, fully drowning in the grace of God: Now that’s worship.

Today was my second interview at McDonald's. I am officially hired. And I'm totally at peace. I'm even kind of excited about it. I'm just glad to have a job. I'll probably be at the one in Malibu, which I'm totally okay with. I'll have a beautiful drive! I'm looking at the silver linings. Hey, maybe I'll be really good at my job. I know I'll be able to show the light of God there. And that is the biggest silver lining there is. :)
For I know the plans I have for you, declares The Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek and find me, when you seek me with all your heart."
Jeremiah 29:11-13, ESV Translation
Trusting God in the Job Hunt
Last week, and this week so far has been devoted to job hunting. And let me tell you - job hunting is one of the most frustrating things I have ever done.
I've done job hunts before - and I hate them. I'm pretty sure no one has ever wanted to hire me. The summer after my senior year of high school in particular, I wanted to find a job so I could save up money for college. I wasn't too successful in that venture, as I got out of school two weeks after every other teenager in the Phoenix area, I had no experience, and I had to tell every employer that I was moving to Tucson in August. I was pretty much the picture perfect image of someone who wouldn't be hired, ever.
So when we started the job hunt last week, I had this in my mind (as well as the knowledge that the rules for when we could work would make finding a job incredibly difficult), but I also had in mind the fact that every SMSP alum at Cru at UA was able to find a job; why can't I? I realize now that I started out with a problem: I was trying to rely on my own skills and "impressive" resume to find a dream job I would love instead of relying on where God wanted me to be. As the days passed and my friends were getting calls back and interviews and job offers, I got more and more frustrated. I thought there must be something wrong with me. I remember driving back to the Palm from the promenade alone on Friday after an interview with Lush (which turned to nothing - my availability turned out to be no good), and just breaking down crying. I was sobbing, wondering what was wrong with me. Why God, why are you not giving me a job?
On Saturday, I had discipleship with my action group leader, and after I talked about how frustrated I had been getting with the hunt, she brought up the fact that 1) Maybe I should move away from the Promenade to look and 2) I needed to trust God. I needed to surrender the job hunt to God. He will put me in whatever job he needs me in and is best for his glory. Maybe he won't put me in an awesome job because I'll end up worshiping it instead of him.
So today, when I restarted the job hunt, I took some time to myself, and talked to God about everything. I surrendered (or at least I tried) my frustration, my anger, my thoughts about what I deserve, and my job hunt to God. I went out searching on another street and applied to three places - Peet's Coffee, Kreations Kafe, and a balloon shop. I got an interview with Kreations an hour after I submitted my resume, and the manager is looking to see if my availability will work. I still don't have a job offer. There's still a chance I'll have to work at McDonald's (open interviews are tomorrow...I haven't decided if I want to go...). But no matter what happens, God will be in control. He will put me where he will be glorified best.
Gosh, that's still a hard one to say. Surrendering anything is so big, and so hard - I love to be in control. It's the baby sibling in me, wanting so much to be able to call the shots. Please pray for me, that I will wake up each morning and surrender my day to Christ. That I am not in control - and that's a good thing.
