The Body Under The Bed
A notorious and freaky case in our series "Another One Bites The Dust" happened at the Capri Motel in Kansas City in July 2003.
A male guest checked into the room on a Thursday and immediately noticed a horrific stench. When he complained, motel management told him nothing could be done. Insanely, the man actually stayed in the room for three nights before finally checking out on Sunday because he could no longer tolerate the smell.
When the cleaning staff finally went in to investigate the source of the odor, they lifted the mattress and box spring to find a body hidden in the hollow space beneath.
The body was identified as Edward Vernassie, a 59-year-old local man. Investigators estimated he had been dead and stuffed under the bed for several days before the discovery.
His death was treated as a homicide, though the case proved difficult to solve and never was. To this day, his killer has never been caught or brought to justice. Just another classic eerie unsolved motel mystery.
The Capri Motel itself didn't last much longer either; it gained such a nasty reputation for crime and drugs that the city eventually shut it down and leveled it completely. The only thing that actually survived was the motel's iconic 1950s era neon sign (as shown above). A local museum saved it from the demolition debris, fully restored the neon and put in display as a piece of roadside Americana.
