sabrina was born into a perfect, rich, and well known family in the city of nyc, new york. 

they was the first born child, though not the last born. 

until she was about 10, her parents kept giving her more siblings, and she kept up the responsibility of taking care of them. 

sabrina had no problem with it, either. she was a good kid, and she was good at taking care of her siblings. 

as far as she was concerned, everything was normal. they were popular, smart, pretty, and loved.

and then she met this boy. 

a boy who she was told to stay away from but he just treated her so differently, it was impossible for her to truly stay away; because at the time he was kind, caring, loving, and took care of them in a way that they had never been taken care of before. 

she got pregnant with the twins at sixteen and the boy? he ran. 

her parents tried to marry her off which she thought was RIDICULOUS, because she wasn’t even an adult ! 

so she ran away, with thoughts of making it as a model and waitress.

and sabrina struggled, but she had help from small towns she passed through until she landed in roswell. 

roswell treated her well and she finally settled down there; struggling, but happy with her twins and content.

        ‘  i’ll  let  you  have  ‘em  for  free  so  long  as  you  keep  ‘em  overnight  -  so  that  i  can  get  properly  wasted  .  ’   they  chuckle  ,   mostly  joking  at  the  statement  ,   because  how  else  are  friendsgivings  supposed  to  go ?  she  simply  wants  to  enjoy  herself  without  her  kids  calling  her  out  for  being  WINE DRUNK !    ‘  seriously  ,   though  .   about  friendsgiving  or  bringing  them  for  a  few  hours  ,  ’   they  say  ,   putting  in  their  number  .    ‘  down  for  either  .  ’

heart  skips  a  beat  as  the  word  ‘ dad ’  leaves  his  daughter’s  lips  .   it’s  his  right  to  be  a  father  ,  but  it’s  a  long  way  from  being  considered  one  by  daisy  and  wanda  .   and  he’s  trying  .   whoever  catches  the  three  alone  could  tell  he  is  trying  .   matty  learned  that  daisy  easily  warms  up  to  people  ,  and  they  connected  effortlessly  .   while  wanda  …   is  still  a  little  shy  around  him  ,  still  holds  back  ,  even  though  she  likes  to  hold  hands  with  him  .   thus  ,  hearing  that  word  ,  it  overflows  him  with  happiness  ,  and  he  can't  quite  contain  it  .   another  glance  is  thrown  towards  his  daughters  ,  before  locking  eyes  with  a  flustered  demi-girl  .   fingers  reach  out  on  impulse  to  softly  sweep  a  few  stray  locks  from  her  face  .   no  cold  breeze  tousled  her  hair  ,  he  simply  wanted  an  excuse  to  touch  .   “  of  course  mom  is  coming  with  us  .   and  she’ll  be  coming  to  the  next  one  too  ,  won’t  you  ?  ”

even  after  spending  a  ridiculous  amount  of  time  mulling  over  their  situation  ,  matty  still  hasn’t  found  his  footing  .   because  there  they  are  -  and  it  feels  a  lot  like  how  they  were  .   and  he  has  to  resist  the  urge  to  place  a  hand  on  their  back  like  he  used  to  ,  to  tell  her  she  look  beautiful  again  and  again  and  again  .   he  needs  to  remember  -  if  he  goes  that  far  ,  he  won’t  get  away  with  it  .   not  this  time  .   they  have  children  whose  eyes  will  narrow  in  suspicion  at  any  form  of  interaction  ,  who  will  be  gossiping  about  it  to  one  another  ,  who  will  be  cornering  their  mother  later  on  and  asking  if  they  will  get  back  together  .   and  he  knows  that  no  promises  can  be  made  .   so  instead  ,  their  interaction  sums  up  to  the  casual  touch  of  shoulders  every  now  and  then  as  they  walk  .   and  it’s  how  he  thinks  it’ll  go  for  the  rest  of  the  night  .

at  the  restaurant  ,  matty  detangles  from  his  family  to  approach  the  hostess  .   he  informs  of  the  reservation  under  his  name  ,  she  marks  her  book  and  soon  they’re  being  led  to  a  table  for  four  .

           there’s  a  bit  of  a  pit  in  their  stomach  ,    and  it’s  most  certainly  jealously  .   jealousy  of  matty  getting  time  with  the  girls   (  without  her  )  ,   jealousy  they  got  along  all  so  well  ,   without  her  .   as  if  the  girls  will  suddenly  decide  they  don’t  NEED  her  ,   that  they  would  prefer  their  father  ,   that  none  of  this  would  end  up  good  .   they  take  a  deep  breath  ,   plaster  a  smile  on  their  lips  ,   and  reaches  out  to  shuffle  up  daisy’s  hair  .  purposely  doesn’t  look  at  matty  as  she  speaks  to  her  children  ,   going  on  her  knees  so  they  can  both  hug  her  properly  ,   and  she  can  press  her  lips  against  both  of  their  temples  .    they do look like a family  ,   and  anyone  passing  by  would  notice  .    ‘  i’ll  always  be  here  ,  ’   she  says  ,   tapping  their  noses  as  they  giggle  up  at  her  .    ‘  and  you  know  i’ll  never  say  no  to  a  free  meal  .  ’  

        it’s  clear  their  children  are  happy  ,   content  .   and  when  stands  back  up  ,   he  looks  at  sabrina  while  pushing  hair  from  their  face  ,   sabrina  can’t  help  but  lock  eyes  as  he  does  so  .   electricity  ,   no  denying  that  something  in  them  ignited  that  last  night  together  ,   and  she  knows  she  has  to  ignore  it  .   it’s not worth it  ,   they’ll  have  to  remind  themselves  ,   though  the  thoughts  are  almost  always  pleading  ,   begging  to  not  follow  common  sense  .   it’s  hard  ,   for  they’re  drawn  to  each  other  and  they  know  it  and  the  amount  of  self control  that  goes  to  keeping  their  hands  to  themselves  is  astronomical  .   sabrina  will  be  hyper  aware  ,   though  ,   attention  on  every  move  he  makes  ,   on  every  passing  touch  ,   and  it  will  truly  feel  like  she’s  in  high  school  again  ,   just  a  teenager  with  butterflies  .  

         wanda  and  daisy  sit  next  to  each  other  before  sabrina  can  stop  them  ,   leaving  matty  and  sabrina  to  sit  next  to  each  other  .   her  gaze  lands  on  him  ,   before  shrugging  and  taking  their  seat  .    ‘  so  what  did  you  and  your  dad  do  today ?  ’   she  asks  the  girls  ,   almost  robotic  ,   as  she’s  never  done  this  before  .   and  it  feels  ...  weird  .

          they feel their face heat up, a light shade of pink covering up their cheeks as they sheepishly duck their head. “i think you’d be just fine without me, brina.” instead of allowing themself to focus too much on the gaze thrown in their direction, ziggy decides to start eating. “hmmm, i have dinner with my parents later this week.” words come out with certain dread. “i don’t know if i ever told you but, uh, our relationship is kind of complicated. they’re good parents but they have such great expectations for me and fletcher… it feels overwhelming sometimes.” they take the straw of their milkshake in between their teeth, nervously chewing on it. “so, yeah, you can imagine how that’ll be for me.”

        ‘  no  i  really  don’t  think  i  would  -  ’   they  inform  ziggy  very  seriously  ,   making  sure  their  friend  knows  such  things  .   lips  purse  as  they  listen  to  ziggy  ,   head  tilting  to  the  side  .   sabrina’s  concerned  ,   always  would  be  ,   for  this  is  ZIGGY  and  sabrina  cares  about  ziggy  .    ‘  do  you  want  someone  to  listen  to  your  complaints  or  give  advice ?  ’    a  pause  .    ‘  or  someone  to  conceive  plans  so  that  we’re  a  living  wattpad  story  pissing  off  your  parents ?  ’    daisy  had  actually  started  reading  the  kid  versions  of  it  ,   and  sabrina  suddenly  found  themselves  on  ao3  again  .    ‘  whatever  you  need  or  want  ,   i’m  here  for  you  ,   seriously  .  ’   sabrina  takes  ziggy’s  hand  and  gives  it  a  gentle  squeeze  .

          cyrus knows he didn’t look the part of someone that was good around kids — the pale skin covered in tattoos and the slim figure usually clad in leather definitely didn’t sell that image — but he had learned how to be in the year he has had his niece in his life. between helping her parents out in whatever they’d need and babysitting her, cyrus was practically a pro by now. “the rockstar status has no value with them, right? tough crowd.” he twists his nose. “i don’t know, maybe when iris turns three? she’s too young.” he jokes back. “hmmm, why? did you see somethin’ on social media about it?” or rather, his very obvious and sickly sweet post about his boyfriend.

           and  sabrina  was  part  past  biases  ,   since  becoming  a  teen  mom  and  experience  their  own  form  of  being  put  on  blast  for  both  her  choices  and  things  she  couldn’t  control  .   so  it  was  why  they  raised  daisy  and  wanda  to  be  open  minded  little  girls  ,   ones  that  could  change  lives  without  prejudice  .    ‘  they’ve  seen  it  all  ,   for  seven  years  at  least  .  ’    she  did  have  to  mom  every  once  in  awhile  .    ‘  maaaaaaaaaaybe  .   kinda  hard  to  ignore  your  heart  eyes  too  .   so  ,   spill  .  ’

lilac  rolls  her  eyes,  instantly  on  the  defence  at  sabrina’s  tone  —  it  was  hard  to  not  take  things  personally  with  them,  it  was  hard  not  to  assume  the  worst  of  the  subtext.  initially  not  intending  to  engage  or  respond,  she  can’t  help  the  bitter  words.   “you  know,  you’ve  got  an  awful  lot  of  attitude  for  someone  who’s  in  the  wrong,”  she  replies  coldly,  adding:  “besides,  you  seem  to  be  a  budding  enthusiast  when  it  comes  to  misrepresenting  your  emotions,  so  i  hardly  think  i’ll  be  taking  your  word  on  feelings,  sabrina.”

         ‘  was  in  the  wrong  .  ’   past  tense  ,   because  they  and  lilac  were  NOTHING  now  ,   and  that’s  how  sabrina  was  convinced  that  it  would  stay  .   it  was  in  the  past  ,   sabrina  (  while  a  bit  ashamed  for  how  she  acted  )   was  over  it  .   so  why  couldn’t  lilac  just  get  over  it  too ?   of  course  ,   sabrina  would  NEVER  be  saying  such  things  out  loud  ,   for  not  wanting  to  be  crucified  .   she  snorts  ,   crossing  her  arms  .    ‘  and  you’ve  got  a  lot  of  feelings  for  a  mistake  that  got  out  of  hand  .  ’   after  all  ,   they  had  never  planned  to  want  to  kiss  lilac  so  badly  ,   it  had  simply  happened  .

“ THEY REALLY ARE. i don’t know where they got that from, ”   emilia teases, flashing her a smile. it falters a bit at the reaction to marry, but she gives a nod.   “ good. ”   is it bad to say that ?   “ how, uh, are you two ? ”   she doesn’t want to get involved… but it’s hard not to be a LITTLE nosy.

         ‘  definitely  not  their  father  .  ’   sorry  to  matty  ,   but  their  girls  are  successful  because  of  their  mother  ,   and  when  hasn’t  sabrina  taken  a  change  to  roast  the  actual  fuck  out  of  her  ex ?   then  there’s  a  pause  ,   they  tilt  their  head  .    ‘  it’s  ...  weird  .  ’

she  leans  into  the  touch,  her  loooong  hair  rolling  free  as  they’re  not  working  at  the  moment.  it’s  soft  and  well  cared  for,  just  unutterably  long.  the  girls  were  entranced  by  it  when  sabrina  first  hired  estella.  “change  is  good,  but  when  it  comes  to  my  hair,”  they  make  a  vague  gesture  (she’s  not  cut  it  or  ever  permanently  dyed  it  [this  is  henna]  —  they’ve  always  felt  it  connects  her  to  ochumaré,  though  its  not  a  true  santería  belief.  just  estella’s  own  belief),  “sometimes  i  second  guess.    speaking  of,  how  are  my  favourite  conejitas?  did  they  like  the  halloween  haul  they  got?  and  you,”  they  say  pointedly,  “how  have  you  been…  with  matty,  and  all?”

        sabrina  was  the  type  to  always  change  the  color  of  her  hair  ,   as  well  as  the  length  ,   but  her  bangs ?  they  were  there  to  stay  .   so  on  some  level  ,   sabrina  gets  it  .   on  another  ,   she  kinda  doesn’t  .    ‘  just  remember  that  hair  always  grows  back  -  and  if  you  don’t  like  the  mid  style  ,   wigs  are  actually  really  cool  .  ’   and  they  bet  their  girls  would  get  a  KICK  out  of  seeing  their  babysitter  in  a  wig  or  five  .    ‘  we  got  sooooooo  much  candy !  ’   daisy  goes  off  to  babble  while  her  sister  pulls  out  some  of  the  candy  they  managed  to  stuff  in  their  backpacks  .   and  sabrina  shrugs  ,   pushing  hair  out  of  her  face  .    ‘  i’m  admittedly  handling  it  better  than  i  thought  i  would  .  ’

“ that’s the only reason we’re having a baby , “ he retorted , nonchalant , like stating the weather ; jaden wasn’t the usual sort to take candy from a child but he’d be lying if that wasn’t considered one of the great perks of becoming a father . he reached a hand into the bag , rifling through until his fingertips closed around the first blue thing he came across . that would do . “ with the amount i eat i’d be surprised if this kid doesn’t come out looking like a gingerbread man . “

        ‘  smart  ,   make  your  children  into  cons  in  more  ways  than  one  -  that’s  how  you  truly  win  at  life  .  ’    an  easy  grin  as  they  reach  into  their  bag  of  candy  and  pulls  out  a  sweet  tart  pack  ,   popping  it  into  her  mouth  as  she  does  so  .    ‘  oh  to  be  cursed  with  the  gingerbread  baby  -  real  talk  ,   though  ,   how  are  you  feeling  you  new  and  upcoming  dad ?  ’

it  takes  all  that  he  has  not  to  sigh  in  contentment  ,  and  still  he  does  .   with  daisy  on  his  back  (  she  insisted  for  a  piggyback  ride  )  ,  wanda  by  his  side  and  sabrina  walking  towards  them  ,  it  feels  right  .   this  feeling  -  it  isn’t  easy  to  contain  ,  it  spills  over  the  edges  ,  and  a  smile  simply  can’t  be  held  down  .   he’d  ignore  all  past  mistakes  ,  including  the  one  that  happened  in  sabrina’s  couch  nights  ago  ,  and  have  dinner  with  his  family  .

daisy  shakes  her  legs  ,  signalizing  she  wants  to  come  down  ,  and  as  soon  as  she’s  on  her  own  two  feet  ,  a  story  begins  .   matty  wants  to  hear  it  too  ,  but  he  feels  sabrina’s  eyes  on  him  .   and  gaze  lifts  to  meet  hers  .   there’s  a  smile  on  their  lips  ;   it’s  small  ,  barely  there  .   he  returns  it  .   call  it  a  cliche  ,  call  it  gentle  as  fuck  ,  but  it  feels  like  they’re  teenagers  again  .   “  no  ,  no  -  you  look  beautiful  .  ”   it  comes  out  so  naturally  ,  it’s  barely  noticeable  as  he  continues  ,   “  the  restaurant’s  just  around  the  corner  ,  this  chinese  place  .   best  hot  pot  in  town  ,  ”   he  almost  sings  it  to  get  wanda’s  attention  .

         they  suppose  they  could  pretend  ,   or  is  it  even  worth  it ?  sabrina’s  along  for  the  ride  but  what  a  RIDE  it  is  .   the  picture  of  daisy :   laughing  ,   smiling  on  her  father’s  back  with  her  little  arms  wrapped  around  his  neck  ,   wanda  holding  onto  his  hand  and  sabrina  can’t  help  but  be  soft  for  the  sight  .   and  maybe  she  too  ,   cracks  a  genuine  smile  ,   and  fights  the  urge  to  melt  .   this ?  this  is  everything  .   and  it’s  not  hers  at  all  .  

           but  they  could  pretend  ,   for  the  sake  of  wanda  and  daisy  ,   for  the  sake  of  how  it  feels  to  be  under  his  gaze  even  though  she  should  know  better  .   daisy  and  wanda  are  now  holding  hands  ,   talking  gleefully  and  sabrina  feels  warmth  within  the  depths  of  her  soul  .   she’s  supposed  to  be  mad  ,   remember ?  but  instead  they’re  donned  in  a  long  black  skirt  &  simple  turtleneck  ,   all  under  a  long  peacoat  that’s  unbuttoned  .   sabrina  doesn’t  have  a  chance  to  speak  before  wanda  perks  up  ,   and  even  daisy’s  eyes  widen  in  excitement :    ‘  hotpot  ,   dad  ,   really !?  and  mom  is  coming  with  us !?  ’   and  hearing  mom  and  dad  in  the  same  breath  makes  her  cheeks  flush  ,   and  she  turns  to  matty  .    ‘  lead  the  way  ,   then  .  ’
