High school student Hitomi is transported from Earth to the magical world of Gaea, where she meets boy prince Van Fanel, and is caught up in his quest to unite the countries of Gaea against the ominous Zaibach empire. My emotional breakdown this morning while watching the trailer for the newest release of Escaflowne filled me with the need to draw! So I sketched ep 24, one of my favourites. 

I absolutely *love* Hitomi with that outfit, and when she begins to cry, omg that breaks me every.single.time. And Merle, trying to keep her composture while telling Van about his feelings for Hitomi, arfdsjgsfgf. And Van, who “wasn’t himself” since she left, omg that fills me with a lot of ideas :_) Even Allen, who was “prepared to protect her forever”…um, well, even him xD I think Natal is so done with listening to his emo rants all nights.

Tracing the 10-year-production of Escaflowne - From “Aerial Knights” to Escaflowne: The Movie - Shoji Kawamori

(I recently stumbled upon an old Escaflowne pamphlet of mine and just had to share some snippets from the show’s original creator, Shoji Kawamori!)

The title of the first proposal I showed to Bandai Producer Minoru Takanashi was Kuchu Kishi (Aerial Knights), which was going to be changed to Kuchu Kiko Senki (Aerial Chilvarous War) later. It was originally an other-world fantasy in traditional robot anime style combined with elements of fortune telling, which was popular among teenage girls at that time. On the planet “Gaea”, the Zaibach Empire and the Allied Forces (three countries including the Eastern Island Nation Fanelia, the Freid Dukedom, and the United Kingdom of Asturia) are at war. The knights from both sides ride on their transformable warplanes called “Knight Machines”, which fight with swords in their robot form. Main story development was already completed and if one read the plot for all 39 episodes, he would discover such terms as “stealth mantle”, “liquid metal”, “fortune-enhanced soldiers”, “fate alteration system”, “counteraction of manipulating fortune”, “zone of absolute fortune”, and so on. At that time, the setting was still more science fiction than fantasy.

A little while after talking with Mr. Takanashi, I had a conference with Producer Masuo Ueda and Producer Masahiko Manami, and then subsequently Mr. Yasuhiro Imagawa and Mr. Mahiro Maeda joined the project. When Mr. Imagawa left and Director Kazuki Akane joined, the tone of TV series became more clearly specified and further polished. We were planning to make the work in a girls’ comic style, but it was still more like a boys’ comic at the time. However, since we decided to tell the story from the viewpoint of Hitomi, the most important female main character, we could successfully create the delicate girls comic atmosphere. The appearance of motifs like “dragons” and “angels” and the samurai-armor-like styles can be attributed to the original ideas of Director Akane.

For the TV series, I tried to build quality into Gaea’s world view as much as possible. This entailed the distribution of Gaean animals like the ground dragons that Mr. Mahiro Maeda designed, the languages of Gaea, units of measurement, currency, a calendar system, local customs, and the establishment and history of its nations. Of course, all of those factors were not going to be drawn on a chart or anything like that, but I thought it would be very convenient for the production staff to have such detailed, specific information for their deeper comprehension of the setting. In other words, I thought it was pretty meaningful to let all the staff share common knowledge about Gaea, a totally strange place that nobody has ever visited. And because I did not want the setting to be too confined by our sophisticated sense of reality, I deliberately included extremely fantasized elements to differentiate the story from real life. For example, the major two reasons to have beast-men in the series are: first, to make it visually easier for the audience to tell the difference between the two worlds, and second, to make it easier for the audience to notice that Escaflowne is fiction by showing such typical anime fantasy characters.

My friends and I made these costumes back in 2006, in honor of Escaflowne’s 10-year-anniversary. Crazy to think now it’s been 20 years! Always my favorite show. If only I still had my Van wings 😭
