Hemingway's Playpen

Hemingway's Playpen used to be a far-fetched dream for an undergraduate student in Florida. Now, it is a reality. This literary magazine accepts works of art from all sorts of genres. In the future there may be genre-specific issues, but for right now, all are accepted. The magazine accepts fiction, nonfiction, graphic narratives, flash fiction, and poetry. Thank you to all of the people who have helped this dream come true for me and those who will continue to keep this dream going. You're all amazing.

Updates on Hemingway's Playpen

I'm sorry to write this but I think Hemingway's Playpen will be taking a break for the rest of 2013. Right now, my plan is to open submissions for Issue 04 in January 2014. My schedule is really hectic right now and with holidays coming up I think it may just be best to hold off until the new year.

That being said, this is a pattern that can continue through the years. I think three a year is a decent amount of issues to publish, what do you all think?

As of 8:30am October 4, the third issue of Hemingway's Playpen has been updated. There was a mistake with one of our contributor's pieces but it has now been fixed. If you purchased a copy before this time, my sincerest apologies for the mistake.

There has been a delay in the publication of Issue 3. I apologize for this delay and am working to get it fixed so that, hopefully, we can have this out to you before October starts. If not, my immense apologies to you all.

I'm glad you've found us! Submissions for Issue 04 will not open until some time in October - a set date has not been determined as of it. And no themes! At least not yet. I think in the future, I will be asking people what they think of themes but as of right now there are none.

Hello, I am wondering what your current distribution is like. Are you a web only publication, or do you have a physical copy presence as well? Do contributors get a free copy of the issue?

As of right now, we use MagCloud. There are digital copies available as well as physical ones. We do not offer free copies to contributors as of yet. Hemingway's Playpen does not make a profit, all funds go right into the next issue and paying for the programs it takes to run it. I don't even get free copies of the publication. I am sorry.

When do we find out whether we got in or not?

I'm hoping for emails to go out throughout this next week but please keep in mind this is a prospective time period. I'm still getting used to a new schedule and trying to balance school and work. If you still haven't received an email in two weeks, something went wrong and just send in an email.

Would pieces already published/awarded be eligible to submit? Also, is there any sample, so I can get a 'feel' for the mixture of work in the magazine?

Right now, I'll go ahead and say that if the piece has already been published, feel free to submit it. Just be 100% positive that the other publication allows your piece being published elsewhere. 

There is not currently a sample available, though I will say that there is a wide genre of pieces.

What is the minimum amount of words allowed for a fiction piece? I have a piece that I'd like to submit but I think it might be too short.

I apologize for the late reply. Classes have just started so my life is a bit hectic at the moment. As for a minimum word count, there isn't one!

Hi, I have two questions about submission. First, what would we do if we wanted to publish under a pen name? Secondly, would you accept submissions from teens?

These are great questions!

If you want to be published under a pen name, either write that as a note when you submit your piece (in the ‘cover letter’ section) or, when we e-mail you with an acceptance notice, reply with a reminder of your pen name.

We accept submissions from all age groups!
