does it feel like fandom and fanfic communities as a whole has gotten a lot more... entitled?

I blame ai witch hunt, the normalization of screenshoting fics just to post and mock them online (cough, tiktok, cough), and purity culture (still looking at tiktok). all of these somehow give people, especially those who are new to fandom space, the wrong idea that “fanfics are something for them to consume and criticize”. and unfortunately I believe this mindset is also tied to how people treat contents they consume on a platform like tiktok — where content creators post their stuff for the sake of algorithm, engagement and going viral.

people being rude to content creators on tiktok is unfortunately very normalized there. the same people who are comfortable being rude to tiktok’s content creators and influencers somehow (wrongly) believe ao3’s fanfic writers are content creators and influencers the way content creators and influencers on tiktok are. and so they just… think they can be rude and entitled to fanfic writers too.

I’d say these people were young and most of them were minors. but even then there are so many young people and minors who understand the very basic concepts of “being kind and respectful to people”. so like, some people, who are rude and entitled, are just rude and terrible people. and a platform like tiktok — where influencers create with the purpose to please their audiences and going viral — just enables their toxic views that they can be entitled to strangers, fanfic writers, without any consequences.
