Sploshy Washcloth {Free Pattern}
Here’s a free pattern to knit your own pretty washcloths. Why? I don’t know really but I like the idea! Have you ever knitted / crocheted your own face cloths or dish cloths?

I knitted several small face cloths—just garter stitch though—and they worked great. The issue was washing them, because they'd always end up inside a pillowcase or something. Eventually I lost them and I never made more.

Fresh off the espinner! Some fiber in some colorway from Spunky Eclectic 😅 I just know it was from the fiber club… and I carded it up into rolags, which makes it really unidentifiable. 😅😅 I didn’t do the best job spinning or plying this, but it was fun. Let me ask all of you: what should I make with this?
It's moderately thick/thin with a handful of badly overspun spots. Woolen spun, more or less, so when it's not overspun it's fluffy. Two-ply, about 208-210 yards. It's 108g (so I was right, I am missing a bag of rolags somewhere), so theoretically it averages worsted to heavy worsted, but I think it's likely to knit up more like light worsted on account of the thin spots. It's a touch on the harsh side of skin soft, so probably not suitable for a cowl, for example.

I finally finished my arm warmers that I’ve been knitting for… a long time! They’re so nice and warm that I don’t want to take them off 😅 . yarn is my handspun from a Spunky Eclectic fiber club braid (Frost… something…?) that I carded into rolags; pattern is just 40st 2x2 rib with a thumb hole 4" down (my thumb isn’t in it rn—I’m wearing it as sleeves instead.). 😸 Bind off is a leftover of smaller handspun merino spun in the grease (washed since though). . . #knitting #handknitting #handknit #knit #handspun #spunkyeclectic #handspinnersofinstagram #instayarn #knittersofinstagram #instaknit #instaknitters

idea: a knitting pattern where all of the sizes are worked with the same number of stitches and rows, but the gauge is different for each size. maybe changing yarn size when necessary
This is definitely a thing for some patterns. However it doesn't usually meet the needs of very large or very small people, so it tends to be limited to medium sizes or unshaped items (eg shawls).

Every time I go on any social media platform for fiber arts related things, I only see young moms, or older people (which is cool don’t get me wrong) but I want to know if any of you are out there, like are there any trans knitters? Long ago, I knew someone by a nickname, and at one point I asked about their real name, and they said “no, that is my real name, it’s what my friends call me. there’s another name on my ID, but that’s just for governments.”

Do you ever wonder how many patterns never see the light of day because designers just don’t want to go through the bother of writing them legibly?
Well now I do.
I have at least ten and probably two to three times as many lace and/or color work motifs.
I can't afford the time and energy to do all the work if I don't get paid—I'm disabled and I already struggle with daily self care. I definitely can't afford the additional time and energy to deal with publishing the patterns in the kind of quality they'd need in order to feel okay charging money—editing, test knitting, professional quality photography, professional layout. Never mind the publicity you need in order to actually see sales of a pattern (I can barely manage to post a badly edited cat photo every day), or all the sequelae like keeping up with questions and comments on Ravelry, the emotional fallout of copycats, etc.
So they languish in my notebooks and documents. Maybe someday someone will publish them as vintage finds when I'm gone.
Here’s an interesting thing for artists and textile people- By the beginning of the fourteenth century, images of knitting Madonnas began to turn up in art. This wasn’t exactly revolutionary, since it was seen as suitably domestic, but it’s amazing seeing pictures of craftswomen in action in such old pictures. I’ve always loved paintings of people knitting.
In the first picture, The Knitting Madonna by Bertram of Minden, 1400-10, is knitting in the round, just as people do now to make circular garments without seams.

Blocking Lace?

“Blocking question: I need to block a lace piece to open the yarn overs, but I think that doing so will cause to piece to surpass the dimensions laid out in the pattern. Is there a trick to opening lace without stretching the piece too big?”
I would think that if you take special care to pin the outer edges of the piece to the exact dimensions you want this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Do others have suggestions?
If it has a lace piece and a not-lace piece, could you block just the lace and let the other bits relax?
Another thing I've done in the past is stick a finger (I imagine a knitting needle of appropriate gauge would work as well) through each YO in turn during the blocking phase to open them up without having to pull the whole thing taut. Obviously if there are six gazillion YOs this might be more effort than you're up for. Sometimes you can pinch the sections between YOs to take up less room, too.
It depends a little bit on what effect you're going for—the classic light-as-air shawl look can't be easily achieved without really hauling on the knitting to open it all up. If you just want to be able to see the YOs exist, wiggling them open with a finger might be enough even without any tension at all.

They’re not period (as far as I know, which admittedly isn’t all that far?) for a couple reasons, cotton thread and lace stitching noteably. But: knitting small bags in the round on tiny double-pointed needles was incredibly period, and the foremost one in the pictures was on size 0000s.
(I managed not to wound myself on them. Well, I managed not to draw blood. XB )

I don't know that much about the history of lace knitting, but I do know that although knitted lace predates most of our English-language written patterns, decreases other than k2tog and k3tog (etc) really don't seem to have been in wide use. It does depend on region, though. So it's a bit anachronistic for that reason, but not necessarily the use of lace per se.
Cotton thread dates back a lot further than we give it credit for, but for most things I see silk referenced more—maybe because it takes dyes meant for wool? Wool, of course, is the most common. Not sure what period you're going for, but cotton has been being spun in India for ages, and presumably traded—so maybe they're just very rare trade gifts?
(One problem in detangling the history of knitting is the erasure of women's history—we have some concept what knitting guilds were up to, and some idea of what people were wearing, but it's really hard to find out what they were actually knitting for themselves until they start publishing patterns in bulk. Not only that, but it's hard to find English language resources on what non-English speaking knitters might have been up to, right up until the 1980s or so, because nobody in academia seems to give a fuck. Most of the easily accessible English language knitting history materials are English or American and Victorian era or later for that reason. Lace is definitely a thing by then, but only with k2togs.)

I want to design a pattern for a hat, but I have no idea about how to design a hat. I was wondering, does anyone have any favorite hat patterns, for something like this?
or like, hats like this with the earflappies? And braids?
I’m gonna look through ravelry, but I was wondering if anyone had any favorites that they’d recommend?
I'm exceedingly bad at estimating this sort of thing, even with a gauge swatch, so I usually knit my color work hats top down and stop when they're the right size. Granted, that makes pre-planning color work a bit, uh, interesting.
I usually do pairs of four increases or decreases every other row (so 8 total per two rows), which gives a nice flat top. I transition by doing a few sets with two or three rows between, so that there aren't corners on my hat. Usually I set them up so the increase/decrease area goes MC CC MC with the incs/decs worked in the MC stitches, because this anchors the CC nicely across the stripe. This produces neat triangles of colorwork with an X on the crown. Working 10 decs over 2 rows will work and only give moderate puckering if you want more of a star shape.
I've done some where I hid the shaping in colorwork sections. The two big methods I've seen and used are, first, hiding your shaping in bigger sections of color (so like a spot where you have a good chunk of MC or CC), and second, using stripe-like patterns (like fair isle) and working shaping between the stripes. The second one is a lot easier. The first one gets really difficult, and it's super easy to screw up. It's fun though, if you don't mind ripping back twenty times.

this is beautiful! how did you create the blocks of color with this pattern? I can never do it without having the corner of one color be in the next- If that makes sense
Not the OP, but—you stop one color and start the next when you're in line with the corner, before actually turning the corner.

Oh!! Actually!! I love Caron Simply Soft and Caron Baby! I've made sweaters out of Caron Baby and it is so soft after washing. I can actually wear it!
