My Thoughts on Star Detective Precure Ep. 18 Preview!

I've known about Detective Conan for a very long time. I used to watch a huge chunk of it as a little kid when it was free on On Demand. Although I haven't gotten back into Detective Conan, at least not yet, I've always had a soft spot for the series. As for its connections to the Precure timeline??

I don't know your guess is as good as mine, we're going all out on this one with pure vibes🤷‍♀️.

On one hand I am very excited for this crossover episode because I'm curious as to how they're going to manage the pacing and plot of the mystery by combining it with the usual Precure setting of magical girls fighting monsters.

But I also find it jarring considering that Detective Conan through half of its serialized run focused on murder mysteries so I really thought there might be some sort of murder plot going on next episode, but I definitely can tell it wouldn't go that far. But it would be crazy if it did, peak entertainment.

But on the other hand, I'm worried. Which is why I want to be cautious going into next sunday's episode.

Last season kimi to Idol had a similar crossover episode with dancing stars and despite being a decent episode with the the dancing competition it wasn't all that great of a crossover episode.

I can go on and on about the egregious product placement mishandled by Kimi to Idol, but needless to say it felt like the crossover was just a plain advertisement for the final stage play that needed more time to flesh out.

A crossover is to get invested and raise interest for both the current show and new show airing on TV, including promoting side projects. Dancing Stars is the first of the precure series to have an all boy precure team, a theme of dancing to follow your dreams in addition has a really good story and characters along with a great stage production. And this is coming from someone who watched the first stage play for the first time and enjoyed it all the way through because of that crossover episode of Kimi to Idol.

So when looking back on that specific episode after Kimi to Idol ended? Yea it wasn't a convincing cash grab when the cameos had over a minute and 30 seconds of screen time that never hit the right buttons for a crossover, just cameos for fun I guess. Still a decent episode though.

Nonetheless, despite the many missed potentials of kimi to idol, Star Detective has potential that shows promise. It's a good season so far that's really holding it down with the various mysteries, intriguing characters and fun narrative that keeps your attention. So as stated in the beginning I am curious and excited to see how this crossover plays out!

With all that being said however, if we can get a crossover episode with Detective Conan, then all I am asking from the producers and staff to consider doing a crossover with Kamen Rider Zeztz.

It's right there toei.

Both are airing on the same week.

Wanted to give my two cents.

Precure is pretty consistent with its cameos ala being really bad. The only ones that made a large enough impact in the fandom were Cure Gorilla and Dancing Star. It’s fair to be wary about the new one.

And I’m not going to deny the episode was partially used as a marketing strategy. There was a lot of promotion for this crossover. I can count 10 videos that were made for it off the top of my head, and they streamed the first show for a weekend. And it was asked if anyone started watching the stage because of the episode in the recent audience survey, so they knew this was going to get them attention. 

But calling this an attempt at a cash grab is incredibly disingenuous.

Precure is, first and foremost, a show to sell toys. Because of that, Bandai cares a lot about what happens in the show. And I can say with absolute certainty they weren’t going to be making much money off of this episode. Bandai has yet to make any merch for the stage; that’s mostly on Marvelous. And the only time they sold any merch of the stage in the Pretty Store was 2 months before the episode aired, and it was while supplies lasted. Bandai doesn’t like to take risks either (Cure Wing) so I doubt they were looking forward to this.

Dancing Star is owned by Marvelous before it is owned by Toei as well. And the target audience is different between the two shows (young girls vs older fans) so it creates a whole different issue altogether. Most people don’t know that the stage was already referenced in Wonderful, but it’s super subtle. But Kimipre’s showrunners were reportedly fans of the stage and actually worked really hard to make the crossover happen in the first place. And after a while, they managed to pull it off.

But that creates another issue with the episode: they needed to pull in the already very busy theater actors, 4/6 having no voice acting experience, just to record their lines. And then they added the stage character designer to the staff for this episode, so it’s already becoming one of the priciest of the season. And with how long it took to get approved, they probably didn’t have the time to fully incorporate the boys into the plot.

I’m bringing all of this up because you are by no means the only person to have problems with the cameo. But we should consider that it’s as flawed as it is because that was literally the best they could do.

I’m kinda sad that the Bleakwatch Chronicles aren’t getting that much hype. It was published 3 months before Wings of Starlight so I was surprised that I didn’t hear about it until after both were published.

Like, yeah it’s aimed at younger readers and almost everyone who watched the movies are adults now, but the first book is actually really good if you like the films. It’s a little fast paced at times, but reading it felt like watching the movies again and it expands on the world created in the films. The new cast is charming and unique. And it ended on a pretty decent cliffhanger for the sequel to follow up on.

It also reintroduces the concept of talentless fairies, the secondary protagonist is genderless (with no attention being brought to it at all), brings iron into the franchise (which afaia was mythology not adopted previously), and has anti-capitalist and totalitarian commentary. The only thing that truly brings it down is the irony of it being a Disney product.

This book is great I wish it got more hype.
