Deathbook - Andreas Winkelmann

The novel "Deathbook" is about the author Andreas Winkelmann who wants to clarify the death of his beloved niece Kathi that died cruelly. He finds videos on her laptop which prove that Kathi was followed by someone before she died. Andreas finds clues which guide him to a mysterious website called "Deathbook" and he discovers that Kathi wasn't the only one that got sucked into a deadly game. Once in the fangs of the deathbook, you won't be able to get out alive.

This book was really good, totally worth reading. It's written in the sight of Andreas Winkelmann, the author himself (I noticed that in the last quarter of the book, to be honest, haha) and this made it more thrilling for me. My guesses were always a shot in the dark, but nevertheless, the tension was kept high all the time. I really loved it.

Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper - Case closed

Wer war Jack the Ripper? Porträt eines Killers

This is actually not a novel, but a non-fiction book, which is about Jack the Ripper and who the author thinks he was.

Patricia Cornwell studied the evidences that are left of Jack the Ripper's crimes that were comitted in the late 19th century. She came to the conclusion that the Ripper's real identity was Walter Sickert - a famous painter who seems to fit the Ripper's profile way too well.

The book is a little unstructured, but I think it's pretty interesting to see how Ms Cornwell interpreted the evidences and with which methods she and her team managed to get new knowledge by analysing the old letters and autopsy reports. Though, it contains very detailed information about each murder - so be careful if you tend to get disgusted easily.

Tales of the Otori - Book 1: Across the nightingale floor

This book is about Otori Takeo, who gets adopted by Otori Shigeru. Takeo thought now he'd live with the Otori clan, but he didn't know that he belongs to the Tribe by birth, a group of people with magic abilities. Later, Takeo has to deal with his duties to the Otori clan and the Tribe, which causes many painful decisions.

I got the book today and I read it 'til the end on the same day. It's catching and I already ordnered the next book of the series. The world in the books, which is based on ancient Japan, is fascinating. Oh, and I have to confess that I love the political intrigues and plans that dominate the story.

Memoirs of a Geisha

This book is about the young girl Chiyo, who gets sold to an okiya in Gion, Kyoto at the age of nine. As she has no other option except of spending her life as a maidservant, she decides to become a geisha. The famous geisha Mameha offers to become her "older sister", which means that she'll take care of Chiyo (who is now called Sayuri) and introduce her to the people in Gion. With the help of Mameha, Sayuri manages to become one of Gion's most famous geishas. And after the war and all its struggles Shiyo manages to get the man she has always wanted in the end.

I loved this book. It's interesting to learn something about the old geisha culture and Chiyo's/Sayuri's story is fascinating. Now I want to watch the movie!

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent

The story takes place in the dystopian Chicago and centers on Beatrice Prior. The society there is divided into five factions, each of them resembles a particular virtue: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On a special day of every year, every 16-year old teenager has to choose a faction in which he's going to spent the rest of his life. Beatrice is torn - the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is, but she can't have both. Divergent, the first book of a trilogy, follows Beatrice. It's about her decision regarding the faction, how she deals with the problems because of it and how she makes new friends. And well, it would be boring if there wasn't a plot twist, wouldn't it? And there is one, of course. Beatrice has a secret and she discovers growing conflict that threatens to unravel her secret and the seemingly perfect society she's living in.

This book (and also the two following books - Insurgent and Allegiant) is awesome. I fell in love with the storyline, the characters (that hurts because Veronica Roth ... well yeah, let's say that she's very good in breaking the hearts of fangirls) and the unbelievable plot twists that occur in the trilogy. The books are definetely worth reading - if you don't mind to get your heart ripped into thousand pieces, haha - and I totally love 'em!

Dr. Temperance Brennan is the best forensically anthropologist in Canada. When she starts investigating the murder of a 9-year-old girl, she discovers many other crimes comitted by criminal outlaw bikers. She joins the Carcajou Unit of the local police and does her best to find the girl's murderer. But then her nephew Kit shows up and totally confuses her life. And well - it seems like Kit likes the bikers way too much. So Dr. Brennan has to protect him of being pulled in the biker scene while investigating against most of then. It's dangerous and in the end she has to fear for her's and Kit's life.

This is one of the books the TV series "Bones" is based on. I like the series and I like the books as well, even though the Tempe from the books is an older version of the Tempe from the series. The book is like most crime books - it starts slowly and gets pretty fast in the end, which is quite surprising. I can recommend it to those who like crime stories and aren't afraid or disgusted by bones.

Another Ken Follett book - I know, you're getting bored. But let me tell you about it.

Luke wakes up in a public restroom. He lost his memory, but he knows that he isn't a homeless, which is what everybody else thinks about him. He starts investigating and finds out that he's a scientist. In fact, he is a rocket scientist. This book takes part in 1958, when a crucial rocket start is planned - and Luke manages to discover that he is one of the involved technicians. Unfortunately, he also finds out, that his wife has been a spy all the time they were married.. and now Luke has to stop his own wife of destroying the rocket that will bring the US an important advantage in the Cold War.

Well, guys, you know how much I adore Follett's books. I don't have to tell you that this one is gorgeous, too.

Poppet takes place in Beachway; a psychiatric secure unit. Beachway is haunted by a ghost named The Maude, this is what the patients think. After two deaths the male nurse AJ starts to contact the ID Jack Caffery. Both start to believe that The Maude is one of the patients and they start to investigate. But things are not what they seem to be. Maybe AJ is the one who starts getting crazy?

I loved the book. The whole story is like a game of hide and seek. You should read it. :)

John is not only the sixteen years old boy he seems to be. He's also a sociopath who desires to become a serial killer. But by following his rules, he avoids killing anyone - besides of a demon who used to be a serial killer himself. Yes, this is a really weird story. But the problem is: It seems like another demon appeared and now John has to hunt him. And of course he also has to deal with the usual teenager problems: Dates, burning things, trying not to kill his Mom.. stuff like this.

Though this book is pretty different from what I normally read, it wasn't really bad, but in fact even interesting and now I'm wondering whether I'll buy the next book, too.

The Dark Half

This book is about the author Thad Beaumont, who also wrote books under the pseudonyme George Stark. But nobody would have thought about the possibility that George would somehow materialize and become a real person..

And well - this is what the story is about. George wants to revenge that Thad decided not to write under his pseudonyme anymore and so he starts to kill everybody who had something to do with this. And believe me, when George Stark kills someone, he kills him in a brutal and bloody way.

What do you expect from the King? This book is great and absolutely catching. Once I started reading, I could not stop. The battle between Thad and George is dramatic, bloody and creepy, and that’s what I love.

Mack McAsh is a worker in a Scottish coal mine, Lizzie Hallim is an aristocratic Lady. But they both share one dream - freedom. After Mack escaped from slavery in Scotland, he goes to London and causes a strike of the coal heavers. A court convicts him to deportation to America and so he gets on a prisoner transportation ship to Virginia. Lizzie, who he has met before and who has always been friendly to him, is on the same ship and so they both get to the farm of Lizzie's husband, Jay. But as Lizzie's and Jay's wedlock starts getting really bad, they decide to flee together into the wilderness of Louisiana. After overcoming some difficulties, they manage to escape Lizzie's husband and to start a new life.

As I love every book by Ken Follet, I haven't been disappointed by this one. As usually, Ken Follet manages to take you into the book and doesn't let you out until you finished it.

Beautiful Malice by Rebecca James Die Wahrheit über Alice von Rebecca James

is described as "a sexy psychological thriller"

To forget her past, and especially the memory of her dying sister, Katherine moves to Sydney, wanting to start a new life. She even changes her name, being inconspicuous and not wanting to be recognized. And though she never thought of finding friends, the most popular and most beautiful girl in her school, Alice, desires Katherine to be her friend. But Alice is everything Katherine doesn't want to be: the center of attention. Somehow they mangage to become best friends. But like Katherine, Alice also has some secrets, dark ones, to be honest. And slowly, by reaviling them, Alice turns out to be a total psychotic bitch, wanting to destroy Katherines life. And somehow, it works.

The book is written in three different tenses, the future, present and past, and in the view of Katherine, which is the reason why this book is so intense. I left out a few details because they would take the excitement and some "What? Really? Are you kidding me?" moments, I think.

This book is my absolute favorite. I really love the style of Rebecca James, I urged myself to read through this book in one night (and I read it like 9 times after that) because everything about it is so addictive. I was really surprised by the secrets of all the characters and how the story turned out - I never thought it would end like this! - and I had to cry a lot. This book is totally worth reading, it's nearly flawless and Rebecca James is such a good author, she was called "the next J.K. Rowling" (I'm reading James' other book at the moment and it's also very good!)

The Physician Der Medicus

Rob Jeremy Cole loses his parents at the age of nine in 1020. A traveling barber takes the orphan boy with him as his apprentice. After the barber's death, Rob travels to Persia to learn how to be a physician. He has to pretend to be a Jew to be able to study at the school of physicians, as Christians are very unpopular in Persia. He takes few trips to train his medical abilities and one time, he happens to meet a woman he fell in love with on his way to Persia. As her father dies soon, she comes with him and they marry. She gives birth to two sons and some time after Rob became a physician, the family has to flee because of war. On their way back, they stop at London, but soon Rob sends his wife and children to Scotland, where his wife is from. He tries to build up a business, but fails. After meeting his brother, who became a monk, again and realizing, that he became a power-hungry, unscrupulous man, he has to flee of justice. He travels to Scotland, where he meets his wife and children and where he stays for the rest of his life.

I loved this book, as it is written in an exciting, addictive way. I suffered and loved, mourned and cheered with Rob on his way to become a physician to heal people. I hope you'll do so, too.

So, this is our tumblr and -as you can see- it's going to be a bookblr. (yey)

About the blog: Our posts/reblogs will basicly be about books and what happens in the book. Sometimes there'll be just quotes. We'll shortly write, what the book is about and a short review. So, this is what this tumblr will be about.

About me: Our native language is german, so the book covers will be the german ones, but the descibtion will be in English. Some of us own English books, so there will also be some books not in german. We will also look for the English title. This blog is in English because we want to improve my English and bring good books around the world. :3
