Autistic Shane has echolalia which is why he likes to randomly switch to a Russian accent and repeat back all the little Russian phrases and accented words Ilya says. At first, Ilya thinks he’s making fun of him like some weird form of chirping, but he eventually realizes Shane is just Like That TM (being his cutie patootie self.)

Shane: *sounds progressively more Russian during a conversation*

Ilya, thinking Shane’s making fun of him: that fucking asshole?

Ilya: neveroyatnyy

Shane, whispering in a perfect Russian accent: ✨neveroyatnyy✨

Ilya, clearly wasn’t supposed to hear that: ????!!

Ilya drops several Russian curses while they fuck once, and Shane just moans them right back. (Maybe Ilya fucks Shane three ways to Sunday afterward, and maybe he starts speaking Russian more during sex, but that is NO ONE’S business!)

Shane speaking to JJ during warm-ups: *unconsciously copying his accent*

Shane has genuine difficulty staying quiet and not echoing when Ilya gives his monologue over the phone, but he thinks it would upset Ilya if he did. (And Ilya will never admit it, but each time he said “I love you” in Russian, he hoped Shane would say it back in his little echo, even if he knew Shane didn’t mean it. (He would.))

This is also why Ilya believes Shane could learn Russian in two weeks because SOMEHOW (with his echolalia) Shane is really good at replicating the proper pronunciation.

It’s interesting to me how people will separate Slay The Princess into a love story about relationships and a philosophical, existential story about the question of change and life and death. Because I think one of the main points that the “love story” posits is how conflict is necessary for love in any capacity— not hatred, necessarily, but change, separation, conflicting goals. You cannot stay in the cabin forever.

I really do think that to Eridians, the most alien thing about us is our obsession with space.

Space (and stars) are a much newer concept to Erid, at least relative to us. They cannot perceive stars. They can't even see their own sky.

And then here we are, utterly obsessed. The number of songs, movies, and TV shows that reference stars, the moon, our sun, it's light, astronauts, space — we can hardly go five minutes without bringing up at least one of those things. NONE of them are things Eridians have an established affinity for; to them, they're scientific concepts, and that's pretty much it.

And yet, stars are one of the first things our kids learn how to draw. We have a specific name for the connections we trace between them, and those constellations have been built into thousands of years of our history. We fought a proxy war based on who could get to them the fastest. I absolutely believe that, to Erid, this would be our defining characteristic above and beyond anything else.

It's almost cliché. How thematically on point it must be from their perspective, that an alien from a species so in love with the stars was the one to show up and save theirs.

If you think about it, there were 2 trolley problems in project Hail Mary.

Stratt had to decide the fate of one man or to possibly save all of earth.

Grace had to decide if he was going to live or to save an entire planet by going back and saving Rocky, who might’ve been dead already.

Grace had no idea if he was going to survive or anything when he went back to save Rocky. Even then, he didn’t even know if Rocky was still alive or if he could even find Rocky again. He decided, in that moment, that he would die on the possibility that Erid might be saved.

He chose to save the entire planet, just like Stratt had done once before, both times having his own life being the playing chip.

And he chose the same option as she did.

one thing that i really really enjoy about ryland grace’s character is that his main character flaw (cowardice)…

a.) isn’t generally perceived to be a “positive flaw” (eg. stubbornness, pride, martyrdom, etc (while these are all flaws, they’re generally warped as just behaviors and occasionally twisted back into being a “good thing” instead of being played as a genuine flaw))

and b.) isn’t ignored or erased by the narrative or fans

being a little cowardly and selfish is a KEY part of grace’s character. and those character flaws aren’t the common charismatic ones that we see in a lot of media these days! at least not in main characters- side characters may have similar flaws and cruxes, but so rarely does the main character in a narrative have a flaw like that that’s generally perceived as unattractive and doesn’t wrap around to somehow being a positive thing.

geace didn’t want to go on the mission because he didn’t want to die. this is self preservation. this is true.

grace also wasn’t moved enough by the entire rest of Earth’s population facing a mass extinction event to sacrifice himself. his student’s lives weren’t enough to convince him. in fact, when faced with being forced onto the ship, grace threatened to sabotage the entire mission and essentially condemn Earth to death. this is also true.

and while grace definitely grows through the progression of the book/movie (i really love how grace draws bravery and courage from the person he thought he was, but that’s a whole other text post), he pretty clearly still struggles with drawing past these clear character flaws that continuously test him throughout the book!!!

grace runs from the science field when he’s faced with backlash. he runs from phm when given the opportunity to save Earth. these two giant points make all of grace’s growth that much more impactful throughout the narrative!

i think holding these two fundamental truths of grace’s character beside one another even though they clash makes his character that much richer! let your characters have flaws that the reader/watcher might dislike! give your characters nuance and complexity!! let ryland grace make mistakes and fall into old habits and have to continuously work to find bravery within himself when he’s failed to do so before!!!!!

i dunno i just think it makes grace feel incredibly human and realistic. in a world full of carbon copy morally-grey characters and boring character traits, letting your main character be consistently flawed and struggle to act beyond those flaws is such a breath of fresh air.
