farewell my love
myheartwillgoon.mp3
jala watched him carefully, making sure it wasn’t obvious how closely she was watching his body language and studying his every move. she remembered how her family had struggled, even once they were technically ‘back on their feet’ then there was the issue of paying him back. she never knew the numbers, she’d never cared, all she knew was that she had gotten more hand-me-downs than usual over the course of a year or two. not wanting to give him more reason to be interested in her she answered simply to his question “ tragically mundane ” with an added small sigh for realism. it wasn’t technically a lie, being an assistant was probably tragically mundane compared to someone like him. she nodded and acted slightly impressed when he mentioned new york city. “ how … ” she trailed off, she wanted to say common but that wasn’t the appropriate word. “ nostalgic, even if it does have a business side. ” she said, placing the pen in her hand down and crossing her arms on the table “ but a looming hotel corporation? sounds like you’ve definitely moved on from loans to families under the weather ”
dante narrowed his eyes, not at all in frustration or spite, as a means to look more... as strange as it sounds, smug. she definitely wasn’t the same kid she’d been when he first met her, sometime in her early teens he believed (and thank god for that). he assumed the rest of her family had changed in some way, shape, or form – how wouldn’t they? time never stops working, no matter how much of a simple concept it was. likely much to her dismay, his interest grew when she replied with a ‘tragically mundane.’ he was interested in misery (and not just the movie with annie wilkes, but he also liked that). “mundane, hm?” a part of him wanted to play a guessing game of ‘what job does jala have?’ but another knew that was... probably hopeless. “is it stationed in brighton?” he asked, still on the topic of her career. he offered a single nod in response, “what doesn’t?” he asked, a slight grin on his face. he truly believed that anything – anything in the world – had some sort of business side to it. “loans, families under the weather... as far as i’m concerned, they go perfectly hand-in-hand.”
balancing a pen between her thumb and forefinger, jala read carefully through the email in front of her. she’d read it a couple of times now and still didn’t know how she felt. she had the option of continuing her work properly on the go, her boss had said in brighton but she hadn’t explained her family situation to them. it would make things a lot easier work wise, and she wouldn’t have to stay cramped in some coffee store all day just replying to emails and avoiding looks from the wait staff. she was pulled away from her thoughts when she heard her name. looking up she spotted a face she couldn’t put a name to. it wasn’t a friend, she was very good at remembering their names, and it certainly wasn’t someone from her school because her thoughts kept going to her dad. then it clicked. “ mr. gabriel? ” she responded before his first name came to mind “ dante, it’s dante gabriel, right? ” she added quickly. she really didn’t need to go around referring to people as mr and mrs, especially people like dante gabriel. she could only associate memories of her parents huddled over bills, her father looking like he could cry, and her sister telling her to shut up and mind her own business because she was to young. at his next question she glanced around her set up. with an overly sized handbag stuffed with clothes and cords then her laptop surrounded by her notebook and a small mess of pens, she looked somewhat like a squatter. “ work, i’m doing work ” she answered finally, sitting up straight and sounding more confident than she felt, something she’d perfected over the years. “ what are you doing? didn’t you move to some big city or something? ”
dante recalled his meetings with the guild family well. they were the one exception for him, the only people in a city as small as brighton that he’d agreed to ‘help,’ primarily because the money he gave them came back to him with a great deal of interest – something he always liked out of his loans. he couldn’t recall, however, just how young jala had been; he wasn’t aware of her age, but she looked... over eighteen? sure, he was a loan shark who would maim people with great joy if they didn’t pay him back within a set amount of time, but he wasn’t in the business of being interested in a minor. “indeed,” he replied, a grin on his face to make the one-word answer seem more... welcoming. dante took another glance around her station, then offered a nod. “intriguing or mundane?” he asked, not bothering to ask her what exactly said work was – that wouldn’t give him the gateway to knowing her opinion, and opinions often proved more useful to him than facts. “i did – new york city, very pleasant this time of year. however, it’s a tradition of mine to return to brighton over the holidays, and with that hotel corporation looming, i couldn’t risk the leave.”
@justjala
Dante had found Brighton vastly boring thus far, not catching sight of a single face he was fond of, and certainly not raking in any big bucks. His job was located in New York City so his clientele would include a larger demographic of people; in Brighton, his job was, for the most part, kept under wraps. He had been meandering throughout the town, hoping to stumble upon something... eye-catching when he did, indeed, catch sight of something... intriguing. He could recall her well, one of the only families in Brighton that he’d agreed to ‘help,’ but that seemed to be eons ago. His curiosity, an unfamiliar feeling to him, overtook him as he approached her and her... perhaps it was a camp-out of some sort. “Jala, yes?” he began, although he already knew the answer – his memory was sharp as a tack. He looked down at her in great interest, the way a shark would look at a fish... if they could... visibly move their pupils... he’s a loan shark, just laugh. “Could I ask what it is you’re doing?” He used careful precision, making sure not to make the mistake of asking ‘may’ – he may do anything, ‘could’ almost seemed to require an answer.
“Well I’ve always had a deep respect And I mean that most sincerely The band is just fantastic That is really what I think Oh, and by the way, which one’s pink?”
“It is the definition of a loan, yeah, but do you usually offer strangers loans?”
“Five dollars isn’t going to burn a hole in my pocket, is it?”
“Loan me… as in, an IOU?”
“Is that not the definition of a loan?”
These Brighton people are too good looking, he thought as he examined Dante’s face. Eddie blankly stared at Dante, only catching his question at the end. “I don’t know, man,” he replied, shaking his head. “You’re highkey weird but I lowkey like you. You seem classy and like you have your life together.”
Dante nodded along as his counterpart spoke – something about highkeys and lowkeys, but he was fairly certain he got the gist. If nothing else, the last sentence that came out of the other man’s mouth confirmed his belief and he offered a grin. “I believe I’d say the same for you – that first part. As for the latter, thank you. I take great pride in my... accomplishments.”
“What are you saying? Kpop is amazing. 10/10 would recommend. Ok, that might not be an accurate statistic but if we were to ask 10 people right now I’m pretty sure they’d be like ‘hell yes, kpop slays’. Jeanne Lee? Who? Where are you from then? Mars?”
“This is the first I’ve ever heard of it, this... KPOP. I’m not sure how accurate your statistic can be given that cold, hard fact. Jeanne Lee, wonderful jazz singer, but I wouldn’t say many people would be like ‘hell yes, Jeanne slays.’ Not everyone knows about Jeanne, do you understand what I’m saying?”
“It’s called a blowdryer. Magical things… not that you would really understand with your.. lack of hair.”
“Blowdryers add time – hair adds time. Time... is precious. My ‘lack of hair’ is part of what gives me said time.”
“I agree with you, we can. But man, I really wanted to buy some chips but the store doesn’t take cards.”
“How much do they cost? I’ve got some spare bucks I could loan you.”
“Are you serious? You don’t know what KPOP is? Have you been living under a rock?”
“I have no clue, and I’m not sure I’m interested in learning about it any longer. Tell me, are you aware of Jeanne Lee? We’re from very different worlds, you and I.”
“They closed down the bank that used to be here… and where the hell are all the ATM’s?”
“I wouldn’t worry about the banks or ATMs right now, nah. Brighton might be sinking itself, but we, the residents, can keep ourselves afloat.”
“I’m getting dressed in my own sweet time. Stop rushing me.”
“You’ll take a goddamn eon if you wait for your hair to dry.”
“This is a fucking outrage! How dare they discontinue my favorite brand of eyeliner. MAC, you are so incredibly dumb. I will be writing a strongly worded letter.”
“Your favorite eyeliner is, more than likely, still being sold by millions of people online. Save and build up your strong words for the day they manage to run out.”
“…I’d prefer it if you didn’t try to talk to me while I’m clearly trying to read something,”
“Mhmm.... tell me what you’re reading, perhaps I’ll oblige.”
