Deep in the Meadow, Hunger Games- Suzanne Collins

This is the sweet song that Katniss sings to her sister prim in the first book. Its a special lullaby to her because it was a song that her deceased father sang to her when she was younger. She sang the song to rue when the young, district 11 tribute was on the edge of death and slowly slipping out of conciousness, it was the last thing she heard.

This is a song from the Hunger Games movie soundtrack. The song really encaptures the mood and tone of district 12, its so sweet and simple yet tragic. I feel almost as if its dialogue between Katniss and Prim.

For all those who watched catching fire, Im sure you got teary-eyed at the sweet old woman who sacrificed her life for finnick in the poisonus fog which was a ploy from the game makers in the 75th annual Hunger Games aka 3rd Quarter Quell. Her name is Mags and she is a fisherwoman/Victor/Mentor from District 4. She is great at making fishing knots and Volunteered for the Quarter Quell to take Miss. Annie Crestas place, also usually referred to as Finnicks Crazy girlfriend. Im pretty sure you could have figured it out from the book but here is some background on Mags that you would have to do some deep thinking about but is actually accurate. As a guess, Katniss mentioned that she figured Mags would be around the age of 82 which means, Mags was alive before the first rebellion. She also mentions that Mags’ speech was “garbled” “impaired” and “unintelligable” to her but, according to the book “The Panem Companion”, district 4 is situated on parts of modern day Texas and Mexico so the “Impaired speech” that Katniss couldnt figure out could actually be Spanish.

This is the most accurate map of panem that I found. I like it because most of the districts are in accurate places and i believe that the capitol is also placed properly. Something scary about this map is that, with the rate that sea levels are rising, the country could very well look like this in a couple hundred years (with California and Florida underwater and parts of Texas) which is when this is all said to take place in the book.

The career tributes are usually the best and most skilled players in the games but what else is there to them? How did they become like this you ask?

According to thehungergames.wikia.com, In Career districts, volunteering is very common. Everyone wants to win the Games, even if it means volunteering. Each year, the tributes from the Career Districts are hand picked by their mentors for being top of the classes in the academy's instead of having their names be picked out randomly in bowls like in the other districts.

This is the most accurate depiction of the Capitol that i could find. The Capitol is the epicenter of Panem. It controls every aspect of every district with President snow as the tyrant even though he is labeled ‘President’. In this picture, as you can see, the Capitol is surrounded by mountains on all sides, this is to prevent attacks from rebellious districts which is not a very well known fact. The citizens of the districts don’t realize how much power they have but the capitol does which is why it takes drastic measures such as not even allowing travel between districts.

It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart

After a tribute wins the Hunger Games, they become a victor. They then proceed to go on a wondrous victory tour around the nation with the last stop being in their home district. They return home to their new Victors house in Victors Village and get a lifetime supply of money. This all seems like sunshine and rainbows physically but when you look at it from a mental point of view, you see that its the capitols way of torturing the tributes even after their games. Going on the victory tour, the winner is forced to travel to the different districts and celebrate their feat in front of the families of the people who they killed or the ones they saw as friends, allies. Living in a Victors house and having unlimited funds is nothing to be happy about either. The games take a huge emotional toll on ones psyche and it causes nightmares, trouble sleeping, feeling and major depression. (Side fact: After a victor dies, anyone sharing the victors house must move back to their old house) What makes it worse is the fact that anyone that you had waiting for you back home wont understand what you’re going through, Its impossible for them to know, so it leaves you feeling lonely and helpless long after you become victor. The game never ends.
