every re read of the hunger games I find a new point to dissect and this time my focus is gale. Another character I could write 12 pages on. It was so easy for me (and a lot of people who have read the books) to cast off gale because of the need to basically pick a side in the team peeta team gale mess. but when you really look @ Gale’a character I think there’s a lot of depth that is left unexplored. Just as Katniss doesn’t have anyone pre-games in her corner, Gale’s only emotional support is Katniss. It’s natural, and expected that he ends up falling in love with her because she gives him the security and emotional tranquility that his life as primary breadwinner for his family cannot provide him. and before the games and the “love”guilt tripping, Gale and Katniss promised each other that they would always be there for each other’s families. So when Prim dies, we see Katniss, not really willing to condemn Gale for fear of losing her best friend. But gale says “it doesn’t matter if it was my bomb, I promised to protect them”. I think this moment is when he’s once again reminded that they were all just kids forced into a brutal game, and that Gales one promise, no matter what, was to keep her family safe. The realization that he wasn’t able to do that I think is the driving force to him leaving for District 2- more than the reality that Katniss would never pick him.
